1 HAMPTON YACHT CLUB MAY VICTORIA BLVD. HAMPTON, VA TEL: (757) FAX: (757) WEBSITE: June 1 (Opening Night Welcome - June 4, 2017 (The weekend AFTER Memorial Day weekend.) Get ready! Buckle up! Sound the alarms! All hands on deck! It s show time! Here comes the fleet! (Photo by PHOTOBOAT) Southern Bay Race Week 2017 is just around the corner (June 1-4) and HYC is the host of this premier event on the southern Chesapeake Bay. More than 100 HYC-ers volunteer to make SBRW what it is. The club s reputation for southern hospitality is unparalleled and every year new and returning racers experience direct contact with our welcoming members and staff. The current list of entrants, 74 as of April 25, includes a racer from Brooklyn, New York (Viper 640), and one from St Johns, Florida (Carerra 290). So far, there are a number from Maryland and North Carolina, joined by a large contingent from here and other parts of Virginia. Racing is planned on three separate courses: the PHRF Division will have PHRF A, B, and C spinnaker fleets as well as a PHRF Non-Spinnaker fleet; the one-design division will host the Viper, J24, and J70 classes, and there will be Cruising and Multihull divisions. In addition, SBRW 2017 is the official site of the VIPER ATLANTIC COAST CHAMPIONSHIPS. Plenty of exciting racing for every stripe of sailor. Shoreside activities will include the opening night welcome, skippers meeting, and registration party (June 1st, Thursday) and on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday there will be a post race party for awards presentations and entertainment. Friday and Saturday nights will feature live music. Everyone is invited to attend the parties! Plans are afoot for shoreside activities that will appeal to racers, family, and friends, too. Already a dunk tank has been secured and will no doubt set the tone for lots of fun for all. So, join in the fun of SBRW! Of course, Jack Pope is our long time SBRW Event Chairman. Talk to Bettyrene Pope, Suzanne Hamilton, Woody Woodcock or Richard Ash concerning shoreside activities. Phil Briggs is the docking (including the lifts and trailer storage) guru. John McCarthy is event principal race officer and runs the PHRF division on the water. Brian Deibler is the one-design division race officer and Tom Connors race officer for the Cruising and Multihull Divisions. Any of these folks can respond to your questions and/or direct you to the proper person with whom to speak. To see all the information about SBRW, including current entry lists, notice of race, schedules, and more click on eid=3016 OR (Southern Bay Race Week pages). For more details or info please contact Lin McCarthy, or mcbear@earthlink.net. And, remember, SBRW is for ALL keel boat racers, especially our HYC racers. If you have not already, you can enter on line (click on the links immediately above) or with a paper entry. The motto of SBRW is Y ALL COME RACING!... and, that means YOU, too! Smiles and sailing fun = SBRW! (Photo by PHOTOBOAT)
2 PAGE 2 MAINSHEET COMMODORE S LETTER TO THE MEMBERSHIP Hampton Yacht Club boating season is back in full swing and I hope everyone is taking advantage of the assortment of boating activities that the club has to offer. Of course HYC has always been a racing club. It started with power boat racing as our historian Jim Shoemaker explained in his recent lecture, and now the club supports numerous sailboat racing activities. Joe Buczkowski is working hard on one design events. For PHRF, the Down the Bay Race is coming up with Vice Commodore David McConaughy as regatta chairman, followed by Southern Bay Race Week headed by Jack Pope. This year Downtown Hampton has joined the SBRW event as a major sponsor and is contributing $3000. Our club is not just about racing. John Newby has set up a great schedule of power boat cruising for this summer, and Sergio Diehl has some wonderful venues for the sailboat cruising group. These two groups are only separated by the speed of the boats and the distance they like to travel. I encourage everyone to look at both cruising schedules and see what fits for you regardless of the type of boat you own. For example, the Cape Charles Shuck-N-Suck festival from August 4th to 6th is fun for both power and sail cruisers. The board is continuing to work with the City of Hampton on our tax assessment. The tax assessor s office originally gave us a new assessment of $7,345,900. We challenged this amount and it is now revised to $6,418,900. This difference represents an annual tax savings of $13,350. We are continuing our pursuit of lowering the assessed value further and bringing our case to the Board of Review of Real Estate Assessments. A hearing is scheduled for May 23rd. Both Leigh Chapman and Marshall Findley have put in countless hours in this effort along with fellow club member and Attorney Larry Cumming, who is representing HYC. The occupancy level of our slips continues to increase to a 94% level while many marinas are struggling. We now only have sixteen open slips. Of those sixteen, six are the 20 side to slips on the north side of E dock. This occupancy rate has helped to continue to build our yacht club cash reserves. Since we have a number of new club members and new slip holders, we all look forward to seeing you out on the water and at yacht club events. V/R Mark May Membership Program Monday, May 8, :30 PM in the Commodore s Dining Room Ullman Sails Virginia is one of only a handful of lofts in the United States that build sails for large traditional boats. The loft has built sails for two of the Jamestown ships, several large schooners, skipjacks, and most recently for the USCG Cutter Eagle. The Eagle, considered to be America s Tallship, is a 295 square rigger and carries over square feet of sail. The loft in Deltaville has built nineteen sails for the Eagle, twelve of them over the past winter. Jerry Latell will discuss some of the lofts more notable traditional sail projects and the unique skills and challenges that are involved. He ll also discuss how those projects compare to the modern sails that they build. The Hampton Yacht Club Board of Directors Cordially invites you and your spouse, or one guest, to our Annual Flag Raising Ceremony Saturday, May 13, :00 to 8:00 p.m. No Children Please Please observe appropriate dress for this occasion.
3 MAY 2017 PAGE 3 MANAGER S REPORT First of all I would like to thank the entire staff for a job well done on Easter Sunday. This leads me to the wonderful Mother s Day brunch we have arranged for this special day. The date is Sunday May 14, We are featuring carved Prime Rib, fresh seafood display and many other savory selections. Reservations are required for this event. On May 13, 2017 we have our annual Flag Raising party. Chef Mike has come up with some great dishes. We have several other events coming up this month. Our Wine Tasting is on Thursday, May 11 th. The Birthday Bash is on Thursday, May 18 th. All of these events are well attended and reservations are highly recommended. The importance of reservations is it helps us to be better prepared for the evening. We have the Down the Bay race arriving at the club on Saturday, May 27 th. Then the following weekend is Southern Bay Race Week. This is a great way to start our summer. The last thing I would like to mention is parking. If you decide to take a trip on your boat, please park your car at the North end of the parking lot. I am looking forward to a successful racing season. Best Regards, Richard Ash Club Manager One Design Fleet Update Submitted by Joe Buczkowski April brought on a great day to begin the season. A spirited group of Vipers and J-24 sailors hit the water to kick off the season with the Trapeze Regatta. While the day started a bit chilly in the 40 s it ended up in the pleasant 60 s and gave all the competitors a great traditional north westerly challenge with puffs and shifts. John McCarthy and team did a great job with RC and Lin gets credit for the photos. Leading the vipers was Mark Wheeler followed by Justin Morris and Martin Casey. In the J-24 fleet Allan Bomar took honors followed by Ray Nugent and William Bomar. The one design fleet is poised to have a great season. Next event is the spring regatta May 13 followed by the Annual One Design and Fall Fling. We hope to see you all out there. All events are posted on the web site and any questions can be directed to Joe Buczkowski at joebuczkowski@aol.com SBRW T-Shirts are available with 10% early bird discount! 10% off pre-orders between now until May 19, 2017 (use code sbrw17 at checkout). All regatta shirts ordered can be picked up at the event and any other items that are ordered can be shipped to your address. Add boat name and sail numbers to any applicable item for $7.50 a line. 4 PAGE 4 MAINSHEET Vernon G. Eberwine, Jr Bumps Scholarship The Vernon G. Eberwine, Jr. Bumps Fund was established in February 2017 in memory of Vernon G. Eberwine, Jr., to enable deserving youth to participate in Hampton Yacht Club s summer sailing programs. Vernon Gaskins "Bumps" Eberwine, Jr. (August 26, January 8, 2017): When "Bumps" sailed away from this world and all who knew and loved him, he was 91 years old and had over 85 years of sailing and boating experiences under his well-worn cap. Growing up on Bennett's Creek in Suffolk, Virginia, he spent his youth enjoying many boating excursions up and down the Bay on his father's fine Yacht, a Matthews 41' powerboat ' Nansemond'. When Bumps turned 12 years old a friend of his Dad's gave him a 10' sailing dinghy and, well, the rest is history. Bumps was hooked! After WWII and a stint at VA Tech as a Naval Air Corp Cadet, he bought a Hampton One Design (Sail # 97, built by Vincent Serio) and started racing her in 1946 with his new wife and crew, Alice. Many races and many wins later sailing out of Portsmouth, Hampton, Fishing Bay and Annapolis, he purchased a 28' wooden sloop he named 'Sea Star' and began winning many coveted Chesapeake Bay races such as the Annapolis to Hampton and many Virginia Cruise Week races as well. Bumps went on to own and race several sailboats throughout his long sailing career which included a Vanguard 32', Morgan 35', Erickson 25' Morgan 24', 30' Pearson Flyer, J36' and an Olson 25'. He even raced a Montgomery 10' in the HYC Frostbite Series and a Laser in many area races into his late 50's. Bumps lived to sail. When he wasn't racing, Bumps was busy managing Eberwine Brothers Canning Company where he was co-owner. He and his wife Alice, had 3 sons, Vernon III, Chucky and David and many grandchildren. Of all his family, it was youngest son, David who has carried on Bumps' sailing legacy and is a very accomplished sailor in his own right having raced with his Dad for many years. Like his Dad in 2000, David had also been awarded the coveted Labrot Trophy in 2010 on their beloved J36 'Sea Star'. Grandson, Chuck Eberwine, sailed with Bumps on both the Olson 26 and J36 for the past several years as well. Bumps' legacy is his great passion for sailing and his deeply rooted love of the waters of the Chesapeake Bay. Throughout his life, Bumps demonstrated the highest level of sailing expertise with a unique grace and sense of humor that was understated and much appreciated by all who knew him. He especially loved sharing his great passion for sailing with anyone willing to step aboard and feel firsthand, the sun on their face and the wind in their sails. He will never be forgotten. Mr. Eberwine, Jr. believed sailing should be accessible to all, regardless of financial means. In establishing this scholarship fund at HYC, we hope to introduce the joys of sailing to all children in the Hampton Roads area. Applicants for the Bumps Scholarship must be ages 6 to 16 years of age, live in the Hampton, Newport News or Poquoson area, have a passion for life on or around the sea and must be able to pass our swim test. If your child - or a child you know is interested in taking a summer camp class at Hampton Yacht Club, but may not be able to afford full tuition, you may apply for a scholarship by filling out the application. For an application, please visit - The goal of the Bumps Scholarship is to provide access to sailing programs to participants who otherwise are unable to afford the program. The HYC Junior Committee will review the scholarship requests on a case by case basis and reserve the right to award this scholarship based on its sole discretion.

This year s regatta included five race circles. Racing on the ocean course included two ORC divisions and a J-105 one-design class. All three days of racing had great conditions for the eight race series. Saturday proved to be challenging with winds from 18 to 24 knots and rough seas. The ORC A class had five boats of similar size in addition to a TP-52, which was racing with a couple of wounded warriors aboard. To no one s surprise the 52 dominated the series, but there was close racing among the other five boats. Sitella finished Sunday with a couple good races to end up 3rd ahead of the well-sailed Mills 43 Cool Breeze, that had beaten them in Key West. It was also the first time that Hill s crew had a chance to race against another XP-44. Also racing at the event was Hampton Yacht Club s Mike Veraldi with his J-24 Quicky.
