1 HAMPTON YACHT CLUB 4707 VICTORIA BLVD. HAMPTON, VA TEL: (757) FAX: (757) WEBSITE: Commodore s Award The Commodore s Award is an annual recognition of outstanding contributions to Hampton Yacht Club. This year I had the pleasure to honor both Carrie Quinn and Don Gregory for their immense contributions to our club. Carrie is the chairman of the Interior Decorating Committee. In this position she has transformed our main entrance lobby, hallways, coat room and upstairs lobby. In addition to many improvements such as paint, lamps and furniture, much of the HYC artwork has been reframed and new artwork has been added. Window treatments have been installed to both the lobby and the coat room. Carrie and her committee have redesigned and installed the stairwell lighting and the antique port and starboard navigation lights in the dining room entrance are now electric. The interior decorating committee continues to work diligently on the plan to improve the look of the Commodore s Dining Room, which is planned for February Don Gregory has been instrumental in improving the exterior components of our infrastructure. Prior to Southern Bay Race Week, he repainted all of the white lines for our parking spaces. Don did this very early in the morning over a period of a week so that he did not disturb the membership. He also came up with the design and numbering system for the yellow arcs underneath the 5-ton and 2-ton hoists. This allows our dry-sailed boat owners to repeat their correct lifting spots while launching and recovering their boats. Don and his wife Julie have also been planting flowers in the pots along the bulkhead. In the winter, Don brings his snow blower to the club and clears a path down all the docks and walkways. Another big project involved Don and Tim Worst, who repaired our structural columns on the waterside of the main club house. Both Don and Carrie have and continue to contribute immensely to our club. It was an easy choice for me to award them both the 2018 Commodore s Award. Mark M. Wheeler 2018 Sportsmanship Award JANUARY 2019 At the annual HYC awards night held Dec 4 th, Don Deloatch and the crew of Riff Raff, part of Vortex Racing, was named this year s Sportsmanship award recipient. Don has recently brought their program to HYC, and he has brought a youthful crew to the club as well. If you have not seen her, Riff Raff is a Melges 32 sportboat. I call her the big Melges, because she looks very much like a Melges 24 except, you know, bigger! I sailed aboard Riff Raff a couple of times this past year, and can confirm they display sportsmanship from the time they reach the parking lot, out on the race course, and all the way back to the club. Several of their competitors also commented on Riff Raff in a positive way. This winter the Riff Raff crew plans to head to Florida, and will be representing HYC in some Melges 32 one design regattas. Let s wish Don and crew the best. Justin Morris

2 PAGE 2 MAINSHEET COMMODORE S LETTER TO THE MEMBERSHIP Happy New Year December is a wonderful time to look back at the year s accomplishments and to look forward to the changes the New Year will bring was a great year for the Hampton Yacht Club! Hampton Yacht Club Membership successfully coordinated sail, and power boat cruises. Adult, junior, one design and big boat sailboat racing events too numerous to individually mention were professionally run. The Down the Bay Race and Southern Bay Race Week continue to set the standard for Chesapeake Bay Racing, and confirm the HYC as a premiere regatta event organizer. The failing bulkhead was tackled by the Board, resulting in a funding solution and a permanent fix. The Hampton Youth Sailing Inc. 501(c)(3) was established. The Board of Directors approved a Living Capital Improvement Plan which will provide future boards a foundation on which to plan Capital Funding Decisions. The Hampton Yacht Club Master Plan was developed. The plan was successfully shared with various stakeholders and Hampton Yacht Club Membership. Food and Beverage recorded record sales. The Aromatic HRSD Building is now an open space. My personal thanks goes out to Rich, our staff, all of our committee volunteers, and the Board of Directors for a Job Well Done! Let s move onto Sailing and Powerboat Cruise plans are well underway. For those planning to participate, January is the month to make plans and reservations. Contact John Newby and Sergio Diehl for more information. Southern Bay Race Week and Down the Bay promise to be better than ever. Registration is open! One design and Big Boat Racing events have been scheduled, including a new one-day, high-octane big boat event, The Hampton Sprints to be held Saturday, July 27, Our Junior Sailing Program promises exciting changes will see the funding and implementation of projects identified in the HYC Master Plan. Projects presently in motion are the grading and paving of the parking area behind the New HRSD building and the completion of the north side fencing. The Commodores Dining Room will receive a fabulous face lift in February. We will continue to provide up-dates of Master Plan projects in the Mainsheet, and encourage membership comments and suggestions. 4 PAGE 4 MAINSHEET Sailing Center News Winter has finally begun, that means our Sonar Frostbiting is starting up! We will be starting our Sonar Frostbite Series January 6 th and it will run every Sunday, until March, starting at 1pm. We will run some special Saturday events to get more sailors out on the water. We will also be running Invitationals where other sailors from other clubs will come and compete! Finally we will be ending each Frostbite day with a special crock pot beverage. This event is open to any HYC member and the cost is the Adult Sailing Fee of $180/year, $15/month or $15/event. So come on out and have some fun on the club-owned Sonars! If you would like to get on the Adult Sailing list, please me at Arielle@hamptonyc.com to let me know. HYC has teamed up with Norfolk Yacht and Country Club to host Junior Frostbiting on Sundays from 1:00pm to 4:30pm, cost is only $20/child. We will be alternating each week from HYC to NYCC. This is for both member and nonmember racing juniors that want to keep up with their sailing during the winter. These juniors need to have prior racing knowledge (if you do not know if your child qualifies, please me at Arielle@hamptonyc.com). We will cancel if the weather is too cold.to get on the list, please me. I also want to congratulate Kyle Pfrang for winning the HYC s Clyde Winters Junior Award during the HYC Awards Night in December. Great job Kyle! Arielle Darrow HYC Sailing Director WET SLIP ELECTRIC USE Cold weather is here and it s time to review the practical side of winter electric use. It boils down to this: Electrical use should be limited to maintaining ONLY enough heat on board to ensure no damage to vulnerable components on board. Keeping the boat nice and warm so you can have it at comfort level when you visit requires far more power than the dock electrical system is designed to provide. Individual boat power consumption is periodically monitored. Excessive consumption could result in receipt of that dreaded form letter that says your observed usage exceeds the category of consumption you have selected and... 5 JANUARY 2019 PAGE 5 HYC CUP FINAL STANDINGS Submitted by John McCarthy Year three of THE HYC CUP is in the books and 43 HYC boats competed for the 2018 championship. Competition was tight and spirited, but, in the end, the 2018 championship went to Phil Briggs in Feather. The Cup is designed to reward both participation and excellence in our eight club sponsored races and that formula suited Feather just fine as along the way the blue J-36 garnered first place in SBRW s A1 fleet, the Doublehand Race, the Masters Race, and The Gaboon Race. Seating limited. HYC Casual Cruisers 2018 was a great year for cruising. We had twenty-one cruises planned, that is at least two cruises planned every month and two separate long summer cruises. What a year, and I can t thank all of you enough, especially those that volunteered to be a cruise captain and host a cruise. Without you and the participation of so many, we might have had a boring cruising season, but that was never the case. Misty and I enjoyed so many different cruises this year, sailing more than 1,000 NM. This group is comprised of cruisers (37 boats in all) from both Hampton Yacht Club and BBSA Cruises. This worked out very well, avoiding conflicts for cruisers belonging to both organizations, and bringing new friends and members to our eclectic group. We hope to see everyone once again out cruising next year. It is not to early to start thinking about 2019, mark your calendars for our first event of the year, the Cruise Planning Meeting. Once again, we will meet at Hampton Yacht Club for a Chef-prepared Italian Buffet, Cash Bar and of course plenty of Sea Stories. With a bit of luck, we will work together to hammer out a draft schedule for the year. As in the previous years, I would like to try and schedule at least two cruises a month, as well as plan at least two separate long summer cruises, which will ensure that at least one cruise will fit your schedule. Please come and join us, come prepared with a cruise in mind and volunteer as a Cruise Captain for a spectacular cruise on the bay. The meeting will be held on February 2, 2019, where I look forward to seeing all of you. Reminders will be sent out following the holidays, until then Misty and I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and a very Happy New Year. Time to get underway, and if I didn t have to work, I would definitely be in search of warmer weather. If you have any questions or thoughts, please contact me at (757) or Sergio.diehl@cox.net.
