1 HAMPTON YACHT CLUB MARCH VICTORIA BLVD. HAMPTON, VA TEL: (757) FAX: (757) WEBSITE: HYC Casual Cruisers: Submitted by Sergio Diehl The Casual Cruisers met for their annual cruise planning meeting on February 11 th, which was attended by 60+ sailors from both HYC and the Broad Bay Sailing Association. Thank you to everyone for coming out on a balmy 77-degree day and making it a memorable evening, not to mention the wonderful spread laid out by Chef and his staff. I especially want to thank the individuals and couples that came forward and volunteered to be a cruise captain. In total, we have planned 19 cruises, which includes a two-week cruise to our nation s capital. Hopefully we have scheduled enough cruises, so that no matter what scheduling conflicts each of us may have there is at least one cruise every month that we can participate in. I have included the schedule below, but it is by far not set in stone. If you wish to add a cruise please do not hesitate to contact me and I will gladly add it to the schedule. Now that the planning is done, it is time to execute. Please let the cruise captain know you plan on participating. This will make their planning a little easier, not to mention blocking sufficient slips at the individual marinas. If you were not able to attend the meeting, but wish to be included in the Casual Cruisers group, please contact me, at Sergio.diehl@cox.net and I will add you to the list. Now if the gods are smiling on us this year, Punxsutawney Phil was wrong, and we soon will be enjoying the bay and of course the mandatory sundowners. Charles Sonny Smith Passages: Nancy Snyders

2 PAGE 2 MAINSHEET COMMODORE S LETTER TO THE MEMBERSHIP The exciting news for the month of March is that the bulkhead replacement project adjacent to the large hoist will begin! We re finally through all of the engineering design work, permitting, financing and contractor planning. By the time you read this you will have seen the larger, dry storage boats moved and the heavy equipment arriving on the property. The target completion date is April 6th, and the scope of the work includes dredging the shoaled-in mud to the original depth of eight feet, and building a walkway around the edge of the waterfront in this area. A future project will see the dry storage area graded, and higher ground to the west sloping down to the top of the new bulkhead. Until this future project is undertaken, the parking area will remain at the present height and have a step up to the top of the new bulkhead. Electrical, power and water will be unavailable on E dock though mid-april. All boat owners on E have been given the option to move to other slips, or remain on E without power and water for this period. Water will also be off on F dock until project completion. The first Spring CCV race day is April 15th. If the project runs behind schedule and the large hoist is unusable that day, we will work with the contractor to have a crane on-site to launch and recover race boats. For the month of March and the first part of April, our property will be in a state of upheaval. It will impact boat parking, car parking, power and water to some docks, and easy access to the northern docks. During this period we ask that everyone please be patient because this project is necessary to protect our infrastructure. Once the first project is completed, we can begin to look forward to the visually appealing part of the capital improvements phase. We hope to have the preliminary Anne P. Stokes Landscape Architects plan presented at the March board meeting. If the timeline holds up we will be presenting their completed plan at the general membership meeting in April. Please make sure to look around the interior of the club as our interior decorating committee continues to improve our surroundings. The stairwell ceiling tiles have been replaced and painted and we have new recessed lighting. Both the SBRW and the Down the Bay race sites are up and running. Make sure to take advantage of the early registration discounts for these events. The club s financials continue to be strong. We have increased our total cash on hand from under $184,000 in 2014, to over $583,000 as we get ready to invest in our bulkhead project. We are finally starting to see some warm days here and there. Since the winter has been a brutal one, I m sure everyone is relieved that soon they will be here to stay, and we will all be out in our boats again. V/R Mark Race Committee Appreciation Social In the Dockside Lounge Sunday, March 4, :00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. Chili, Build Your Own Nacho Bar, Free Beer & Wine Anyone who served on any HYC Race Committee in (Big Boats, Little Boats, Wednesday Nights, Juniors) Come and let us say "Thank You"

3 MARCH 2018 PAGE 3 MANAGER S REPORT Now, that we have made it through a chilly winter, I think it is time to thaw out. So, we are going to turn up the heat with our annual Sock Burning Party. This event will be held on Saturday, March 24 th. Also, coming in March we are doing another Wine Tasting. This event will take place on Thursday, March 8 th. We are featuring a variety of unique wines paired with some tasty treats. Then on Thursday, March 15 th we are doing the Birthday Bash. Bring your friends and enjoy a wonderful meal in a festive environment. We are doing a Saint Patrick s party on Saturday, March 17 th. We will have specials along with Robert Wilson, an acoustical guitarist. The last item I would like to mention is our beautiful Easter Brunch. This is on Sunday, April 1 st. We will have an elaborate display of food. The Easter Egg Hunt will start at 10:00. Reservations are required for all of these events. I look forward to seeing everyone around the club. Best Regards, Richard Ash Club Manager USNA MIDSHIPMEN ARE COMING TO SBRW 2018! May 31 - June 3, 2018 (the weekend following Memorial Day) HYC will be hosting coaches and crew of the USNA 44-footers that will be racing at SBRW Two, and perhaps a third, Navy 44s worth of Midshipmen and coaches will be arriving at Southern Bay Race Week. HYC is hosting the contingent, as we always do. One of the things the Midshipman love about coming here to HYC is our relaxed, southern hospitality. A big part of that is being able to stay with HYC members while they are here. If you can help accommodate our guests, please make a note on your calendar of the dates (see above) and let Ron McLean know. You will be responsible only for providing a place for the Mids to sleep. All their meals are arranged in advance at the regatta. If you are within walking distance of the club, your participation would be especially appreciated. Please call Ron McLean at (757) Annual Sock Burning Saturday, March 24, 2018, at 6:30 pm Pub Menu Available 5:00-10:00 PM Live Entertainment featuring Loose Cannon 7:00 PM-10 PM Sock burnings are a well-recognized nautical tradition and the HYC sock burning is one of the best. The club members are in the mood for whimsy. The long winter is unpleasant for many, but in Hampton, a town whose identity is tightly anchored to sailing and boating, it is regarded as a calamitous error on the part of Mother Nature. It means four months of dry-docked boats, vacant marinas and gusting winds squandered on furled sails. Bring your old/new winter socks to burn to prepare our club for spring. The sock burning will start at 6:30 p.m. Like most get-togethers at the club, this one will involve spirited drinking and boat talk, but there will be a sense of occasion in the air, too.

Remember you are responsible for your guest and that a HYC member has priority over the guest. HYC Junior Sailing is looking for members who live near the yacht club to potentially house some international or outof-state instructors for our summer season. Juniors love to meet and interact with sailors from all over. Therefore, for this summer and future summers we want to reach out and hire instructors from our area and from all over the world. If you would like to house a responsible international or out-of-state instructor for the summer, please Arielle Darrow, HYC Sailing Director, at Arielle@Hamptonyc.com. We are getting close to summer! Therefore, we are asking for the gift of sailing in remembering Vernon "Bumps" G. Eberwine, Jr. The Bumps Scholarship was established in February 2017 in memory of Bumps to enable deserving youth to participate in HYC's Summer Sailing Programs. We are looking to increase the Fund in order to send more deserving kids to camp this year! If you would like to make a donation, please contact me at arielle@hamptonyc.com. We wrapped up Winter Sailing with a bang! All the racing juniors loved being able to get out on Saturdays to stay conditioned for the Spring Season.
