HAMPTON YACHT CLUB JUNE VICTORIA BLVD. HAMPTON, VA TEL: (757) FAX: (757) WEBSITE: Hampton Yacht Club Expansion The development of the Club expansion onto the recently purchased Jones property has been completed and is in operation with all new slips leased and occupied. This property was purchased in 2014, construction started in late 2015 and completed (mostly) in time for Flag Raising in May This development added the F dock with 25 slips -24 designed to accommodate 50 boats with a 107 T head for visiting yachts. The marina basin was dredged to a minimum depth of 8 and a new steel sheet pile bulkhead extended from the E dock replacing deteriorated bulkheads. In addition to the added slips a 75 ancillary dock runs along the bulkhead between the E and F dock providing improved access to our marine pump-out station and the new 2-ton small boat hoist. Site improvements include parking to support the added slips, expanded area for the storage of dry sail keel boats, and a 20 x 30 gazebo constructed to offer opportunities for social activities. A walkway along the bulkhead connects the new development to the existing property. The site is landscaped to offer additional green space and an area north of the new parking will provide for expansion as need are defined. For the sidewalk superintendents involved in the marina expansion there is still more to come. HRSD has started the construction of the new pump station on the front part of the Jones property and construction should be complete in early to mid In addition to the pump station structure new sewer mains will be constructed in Bridge Street and we can expect partial closures of Bridge Street with re-routing of traffic to accommodate this work. Following the completion of the new pump station the existing pump station property will be transferred to HYC. For added excitement the City has awarded the contract for the Bridge Street bridge replacement and construction is expected to start in early June and run about one year. Bridge Street will be closed to through traffic until completion.
PAGE 2 MAINSHEET COMMODORE S LETTER TO THE MEMBERSHIP As I write this, we were supposed to get underway for Annapolis about two hours ago. It is pouring down rain, a strong wind blows from the Northeast and waves in the bay are running 3-4 feet. The good news is that after a cold, wet spring, the rest of the week is supposed to be beautiful though with a little lighter air than we would like. Down the Bay 2016 is sure to be as fun as all the others. I would like to thank Rich and our wonderfully dedicated club employees for the beautiful Flag Raising that was held last week. As always, the food was fantastic and our employees attention to detail was on clear display. Unfortunately, the weather prevented two planned outdoor bars from being used, and we were unable to hold the ribbon cutting ceremony for the marina expansion. The plan is to do this at the Pig Picking on July 2nd. The incredible efforts of Marshall Findley, Phil Briggs and Frear Hawkins have borne fruit. The marina expansion, a historically significant undertaking for our club, came in under budget. This is something you don t often hear about projects of this size. It is especially impressive given that the budget would have been much larger if we had had to pay for the consulting, engineering and legal services that these members provided. This volunteer spirit permeates all of the club s undertakings and makes it what it is: one of the most vibrant and successful clubs on the East Coast. We are also fortunate to have a management team and staff with great dedication and an array of talents. Mike Johnson, Ron Forbes and their team ensure that meals and service at the club are consistently excellent. In addition to running an outstanding food and beverage operation, they can compete with the very best catering organizations in putting on the most demanding events. Rich and I receive many deserved compliments as a result of their efforts. These are difficult organizations to run. If the food and service are not excellent every time the organization can suffer harm out of proportion to an actual or perceived lapse or failure. We have recently instituted a new food and beverage evaluation and review system. After your meals at the club, please take the time to provide our managers and employees with your feedback. This is absolutely necessary if our history of consistent excellence is to be maintained. Down the Bay 2016 and Southern Bay Race Week are upon us. The fleets will be bigger and better than last year. With many recent improvements, the energy, services, and support we bring to bear on these events will be as well. See you around the club, Jamie Saturday, July 6 th Saturday, Saturday, July 7 th July 2 nd A pig will be roasted on the premises by some of HYC s finest member-chefs. Food will be served at 6 PM Music Begins at 7 PM Pig Roast, Chicken Wings, Baked Beans, Cole Slaw, Corn on the Cob, Corn Bread & Watermelon $12++ ($6++ Children)
JUNE 2016 PAGE 3 MANAGER S REPORT First I would like to thank the staff of Hampton Yacht Club for a terrific Flag Raising and Mother s Day. The food and the service for both events were spectacular. There was a great time had by all. We have our Wine Tasting coming up on Thursday, June 9 th. There is a Birthday Bash on Thursday, June 16 th. On Sunday, June 19 th we are having our Fathers Day Brunch. We are having a wide variety of fresh foods. We are going to try another Friday night entertainment. This will be on Friday, June 24 th. I will have beer, wine and a dark and stormy bar outside. There will be a raw bar there too. This event will happen weather permitting. Also, on Saturday, June 25 th we are doing a BBQ cook-out on the bricks with Chef Mike. We are having our annual Pig Pickin on Saturday, July 2 nd. Several of our members will be cooking the pig all day and Chef Mike will be preparing all of the accompaniments. These are chicken wings, baked beans, cole slaw, watermelon, corn bread and corn on the cob. Reservations are recommended for this event. The last thing I would to say is on a personal note. I really appreciate all the cards and letters I received over the past month. Thank you very much from my family. Best Regards, Richard Ash Club Manager HYC Casual Cruisers Submitted by Sergio Diehl By the time that we are all reading this in the Mainsheet, the Memorial Day Cruise will be in the history books, but due to submission deadlines, we still have yet to set sail. Look for a summary of the goings on of the Casual Cruisers in Mobjack Bay in the July. The Casual Cruisers do have a few cruises planned for June. I listed them below, along with the Cruise Captain, please contact them to let them know that you are interested to help in their planning: 1. 4 PAGE 4 MAINSHEET SAILING CENTER NEWS Submitted by Arielle Darrow Women s Sailing has been a great success! We have had many new sailors step up and we have been having a great turn out each race. We, also, held a HYC Women s Regatta on May 21 st and had five boats go out with John McCarthy as PRO. The women had a great time and we hope for another successful regatta next year. Team Racing is still going on every Thursday at 5:30pm, if you are interested just show up in the dry storage area! June 25 th from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., we are hosting a Virginia Boater Safety Course. If you would like to sign up, please me at Arielle@hamptonyc.com. Do not forget, you can use the Sonars for Wednesday Night Races, One-Design Regattas and for recreational use. Just me to sign up or to take the Sonar out for a wonderful day cruise. Attention! Our c420 Summer Race Team is looking for housing for our Junior Olympics in Lewes, DE and c420 Nationals in Falmouth, MA. If you have a house we can rent or know of anyone that does, please let me know! I appreciate any help. We will be hosting the US Sailing Level 1 Course for anyone interested in becoming a sailing instructor. This class will be an all-day class from June 8 th to June 11 th. For more information and to sign up, please see This year we will be hosting the HYC Junior Regatta on June 30 th for c420s, Radials and Optis. If you would like to register your child for this event, please go to Junior s Spring Sailing has had a wonderful start with many sailors attending. If you missed out on your chance to sign up your child or grandchild, it is not a problem! Please go to to sign up. Our Summer Camps are still open and ready for any child who wants to have fun! Your child or grandchild will get to become a pirate for a day, learn about what inhabits our waters, play on-the-water Quidditch, discover if Davy Jones Locker is real, learn how to ninja dock his/her own boat and more! This year we have a new camp with the Air and Space Center. Your child will spend half the day learning about the laws of motion by building rockets and roller coasters. After lunch, the sailors will then learn the basics of sailing by sailing on the Optis. Pass along the word that any child can sign up, no matter if their parent is a member or not. To sign up, please go to Cinco de Mayo and Derby Party 2016
JUNE 2016 PAGE 5 First Ever -- Hopefully Annual -- Women's Sailing Regatta Submitted by Suzanne Hamilton Sunday, May 22 nd, was the occasion for the first HYC Women's Sailing regatta. On a rather dreary and chilly day, 18 fearless ladies raced five Sonars around Strawberry Banks, cheered on by their many supporters. The starts were extremely competitive and the finishes were shared equally by all boats. The Race Committee, led by PRO John McCarthy (the originator of the event), kept the race course short and downtime between the races to a minimum due to impending rain and dying winds. Laughter and high fives were the order of the day among all the boats; the camaraderie was palpable and the request to have a repeat event was often heard. It is no exaggeration to say "A Good Time Was Had By All!" Congratulations to everyone who participated but especially: Third Place: Fish Fry, Catherine Ryan, Skipper; Alice Lones, Peggy Patrick and Christina Ritger, Crew Second Place: Southern Bay Racer, Anita Seidler, Skipper; Kim Deibler, Suzanne Hamilton and Karen Thornton, Crew First Place: Clam Digger, Cheryl Marek, Skipper; Amanda Moore and Carolyn Cox, Crew

PAGE 8 MAINSHEET Attention All Slip Holders With completion of the new docks and the arrival of warmer weather, our docks are again very active with sail boat racing and weekenders gathering to enjoy the many activities at Hampton Yacht Club. With that in mind it s a good time to review our electrical usage policy. As these policies have not been updated in many years it has become apparent that some changes were needed to better reflect the way we use our boats and the associated costs. Additionally, we added a new cost category in the amount of $ annually, which is intended for those of us who would like to run our AC/heat pumps as well as our other electrical equipment while we are down at the club using the boat. Keep in mind that for those in the $ category, policy states that members should not run AC/Heat pumps if unoccupied. It should also be noted that the $530 category is not unlimited. It must be managed. In this category you can run your heat pump and other equipment occasionally when you are not on board, but if you want to run your equipment continuously please contact the berthing committee chair, Phil Briggs, to work out a fair yearly rate. We each need to pay for what we use. The Club is not allowed to, and does not make a profit from the electrical usage on the docks. We need to collect what we use. This is an honor system unlike metered marinas. Please take a minute to review the updated policies to see if you are affected by these changes. If you have any questions regarding you electrical usage or category selections, please contact the berthing committee or club manager. SATURDAY, JUNE 25, :00-8:00 PM GRILLED RADICCHIO SALAD BARBECUED SPARERIBS WITH APRICOT ANCHO GLAZE SWEET CORN WITH LIME CHILI BUTTER GRILLED POTATO SKEWERS DESSERT GRILLED PEACHES WITH VANILLA ICE CREAM AND RASPBERRY SAUCE $25++ June 19 th 11 AM - 2 PM Breakfast Station Omelets & Eggs cooked to order, Eggs Benedict, Cheese Grits, Banana Choco Chip Pancakes, Home Fries, Bacon & Sausage Salad Station Fresh Greens, Fresh Fruits, Hummus And Vegetables Carving Station HYC Sirloin with Assorted Rolls & Breads Entrees Vegetable du Jour, Boursin Cheese Potatoes, Grilled Salmon with Mango Salsa, Southwest Chicken Breast with Salsa and Lime Crema, Flounder Veronique Seafood Station Chilled Raw Bar, Crab Claws Dessert Station Chef s Station Reservations Required ~ Adults $21++ Children $11++
JUNE 2016 ANNUAL CHARGE RATES FOR ELECTRICAL HOOK-UP SLIP NO ASSIGNED TO PHONE (H) (W) (C) PLEASE SELECT AND CIRCLE YOUR CATEGORY. THIS IS PRIMARILY AN HONOR SYSTEM THAT IS PERIODICALLY MONITORED. ANNUAL FEE A. Mandatory Minimum: Permits occasional use of electric power tools from dockside outlets. $18.00 Unattended hook-up to boat is not permitted. B. Casual Use: Category A plus light bulbs, radios, battery chargers, fans and TV. $90.00 C. Light Use: Categories A & B plus heat tapes for three winter months, $ refrigeration, and occasional portable air conditioner use. D. Normal Use: Categories A, B, & C plus occasional use of built in heat pumps. $ Boaters should be aboard during this use. E. Heavy Use: Categories A, B, C,& D plus heaters, stoves & heat pumps used $ more than on an occasional basis. F. Unusual Use: Use not appropriately described above. This could be more or less than category E. Rates set by HYC Board G. 50 Amp Hook-Up: See Above Must use category D, E or F PAGE 9 H. 100 Amp Hook-Up $800 *to be reviewed It is not economically practical to equip each slip with a meter therefore the honor system is used for each member to select the proper category of use. Consumption rates and maintenance costs have been considered and charges represent an equitable distribution of costs among users. On A & B docks the 30 and 50 amp service is the total to each pedestal and is shared with the adjacent slip. The unattended use of electrical heaters of the radiant type with fans and glowing elements is not permitted. A low wattage radiant heater with a sheathed element may be used unattended if firmly mounted and equipped with a thermostatic control. Marine style electrical cables are required for all categories except A. Changes in use categories should be filed as they occur. Adjustments will be made on a pro-rate basis as the Board directs. Summer versus winter use or temporary changes will not be accepted. Suggestions for improving the system should be directed to the Board of Directors. Member Signature Print Name Date Please return form to accounting office. Rev: May 2016
PAGE 10 MAINSHEET Southern Bay Race Week 2016 Submitted by Suzanne Hamilton As you read this, Southern Bay Race Week 2016 is in full swing. As I write this, I don't know how everything turned out. I'm hoping we got all the races in, the weather cooperated (tornadoes are not welcome!) & we didn't have any material or photos for Dr. Crash's column! I do know that many large regatta series are shrinking across the country due to lack of participation. We don't have that problem! The series put on by our Yacht Club is approaching a record number of entries, fleets, courses & racing starts! How does this happen? One word: TEAMWORK! Many volunteers come together to join the HYC SBRW team. We open our homes to racers, we help out on the race course no matter the weather, we haul ice & serve drinks, we offer directions to the Blackbeard festivities & local restaurants, we welcome returning crews & newcomers with open arms. The HYC staff is an invaluable part of the team for the whole event; together, we all make it happen! Amazing Southern hospitality shines through all of us & that keeps these sailors returning year after year. It is my hope that I will be able to provide some statistics in July about what it takes to put on an event of this caliber. Until then, please take a moment & congratulate yourself for being part of a great team!
