Commodore s Report Andrew Wilson Well, all I can say is that it s hard to believe that I am here writing my first Spraytalk article as Commodore of Perth Dinghy Sailing Club. I have some big shoes to fill and I can only hope that I live up to our members expectations. A lot has been happening around the club over the winter with some members traveling overseas to compete in national and world championships and others have been busy ensuring our club keeps living up to our members expectations. A small band of Open Bic sailors travelled to Italy sailing on Lake Garda for the Open Bic World Championships. Sailing from Arco Sailing Club with varying wind conditions young Jenna Everett sailed consistently to finish 3 rd overall in the U13 s and 1 st female - we have an Everett world champion. What a fantastic achievement. Sailing in the U17 s, Barney Woo finished 18 th, Jono Everett 28 th and Rosie Hennessy 41 st. Congratulations guys and those 7 Ps are paying off. On the other side of the world the 29er World Championship was being sailed in Long Beach, California. After a gruelling week of competition Annabelle Davies and Madison Woodward finished 18 th overall and 1 st Females. Good work and well sailed girls. Not to be out done and to keep his competitive edge going Ian Footy Furlong travelled to Richmond Sailing Club, San Francisco, to compete in the North American Championships. Jumping on board with Terry Gleeson, Footy sailed hard and fast in the solid 18knt breezes to take out the regatta. Back on the home front, a small band of builders led by the Hanrahan family, using all of Pete Depiazzi s tools have spent their Saturdays removing, fixing and replacing the Neville Flynn Memorial Deck. Now looking fresh and new it really lifts the look of the outside entertaining area, ready for another stellar Opening Day which is only just around the corner. Just like last year s busy calendar, this year is no different with club championships and many regattas from the get go. The Perth Waters Coaching Regatta is on again from the 3 rd to the 5 th of November. Building on the success over previous years this is an event you need to be a part of. Whether you are competing, volunteering or just around to enjoy the ambiance be sure to mark it down in your calendar. Over the Christmas/New Year period the club with be hosting the Javelin and Sabre Australian Championships. With approximately 100 boats expected between the two fleets this will be a very busy and exciting event for the club. With any event of this size, it takes an army of volunteers, so if you have an afternoon to spare and would like to delve into some race management we would love to hear from you. With Opening Day only one week away I would like to introduce you all to our new performance coaching program. Perth Dinghy Sailing Club s own the.. It started as the brain child of Brad Devine with input and contributions from all levels of experience around the club. After many workshops we derived the ingredients on how a dinghy club performance coaching program should be run. The program not only helps to further the skills of our junior and intermediate sailors but to engage with all our senior members in fostering and imparting their years of knowledge to the betterment of our youth and our club. Although the program is in its infancy, with the right experience, leadership, feedback and guidance, we will develop our youth of today to be the champions of tomorrow. The Skiff Academy fitness sessions have been the first part of the program to kick off and one month in has been well received by all. All members at all levels of fitness are welcome to join the sessions, starting at 6PM every Wednesday at the Club. It s only a Gold coin donation for entry and is the best way to get the body ready for a summer on the water. With so much more happening around the club, I am excited to be working and leading your Committee and membership through Season 2017/18. Make sure you come and say hello and I look forward to seeing you around the club. Your Commodore Andrew Wilson

International 14 Not long now until opening day and the 14s are looking forward to an eventful season. For some it has been a busy winter period modifying and preparing boats for the coming summer. GE and Brad have ordered new rigs and hopefully we will see Carbon Comets modified CST 14 mast make an appearance this year. Ventura is almost back in one piece after losing a battle with a keel boat in the last state heat. Brams and Steve Walters have been spotted out training with their new mainsail in preparation for upcoming nationals in QLD. Shark Bait will be back on the water this year following Greg s knee replacement and is hoping to be back racing before Christmas. We have some new faces in the fleet this season with Quick Shift being sold to some young, keen 29er sailors who I'm sure will easily make the adjustment to the bigger skiff. We would like to congratulate Footy who is now the current North American 14 Champion following his trip across to San Francisco to compete in the Nationals during August. Which is also the venue of our next World Championships. Australian sailors featured in the top 3 placings. Saturday 7th October is Mounts Bay opening day, hopefully the 14s will have a strong number of boats competing. It is also Heat 1 of the DA Traveler s Trophy. Followed by our state presentation on Sunday 8th October at PDSC. Opening Day 21st October, hope to see you there. Steve Vance ON THE WIRE Autumn 1990 On the home front, Brad Devine and Craig Whately have won their first State Title very narrowly from the living legend Ray Hancock and his very talented young crew, Andrew (Horse) Grosse. 8 2018 OPEN BIC NATIONALS O Pen Bic World Cup Report The 2017 Open Bic World Championships were held in Trentino Italy and sailed out of Circolo Vela Arco on the beautiful Lake Garda. Australia were represented by 10 sailors, 4 from QLD, 1 from Vic and 5 from WA, consisting of PDSC `s Rosie Hennessy, Jonathon Everett, Jenna Everett and Barney Woo and Will Drew from KBSC. 187 sailors from 13 nations filled the small township of Torbole, in the leadup to the event, which ran from 31 st July till the 5 th August. We arrived on the 28 th July to collect our charter boats and get settled. Registrations and measurements followed the next day. The lake is well known for its near perfect sailing conditions. From early morning the Peler sweeps down the lake providing breezes ranging from knots. Around midday the breezes drop out as the breeze swings around and the reliable Ora fires up the lake providing beautiful winds of knots. The temperatures were reaching the high 30`s each day. information on the local sailing conditions. We managed to get in some practice sessions on the lake before the regatta commenced, learning to adapt to the local conditions. The first day of the regatta started with the competitors briefing at 11am, with racing to commence at 1pm. The first race day was a practice race, and gave us a good idea of the competition in the fleets. The fleets consisted of an U13 division with 55 sailors in which Jenna competed and the U/17 division which had 132 sailors, with Myself, Rosie, Barney and Will competing in. The Under 17 fleet was divided into two separate fleets. The evening saw us attend the Opening Ceremony in the nearby town of Arco. We were bused from the Yacht Club into Arco, where we were met by all of our parents and supporters. The Australian Open Bic Cup for season 2017/18 will take place at Moreton Bay Boat Club in QLD. Starting on the 4th Jan it will run through until the 9th Jan. The WA Bics will be looking to send a container over to the event, hoping to get up to 20 sailors attending. For those that are new to the fleet please take some time to think about joining in. It is an open event that caters for both Gold fleet and Silver fleet sailors. It is a great opportunity to start building relationships with kids from other states, that they will continue to catch up with at regattas for a very long time to come. Information can be found on the Bic website Following on at the end of 2018 the next World Cup will be held in Auckland NZ. Another event to look forward to. We were coached during the regatta by Will Boulden, who had just completed the Moth Worlds in Malcesine, just down the road from Torbole. He was able to provide us with plenty of inside

O Pen Bic World Cup Report (Continued) shared around the top of the fleet. I was very happy to finish of the regatta in 28 th place. Congratulations to the podium winners, 1 st Sean Herbert from NZ, 2 nd Lisa Nuki from Japan and 3 rd Lennart Frohmann from Denmark. The rest of the WA Team finished up the regatta in 10th, 18th, and 41st placings. After a parade through the town, with all countries proudly flying their flags, the event was officially opened by the Mayor of the Town of Arco. The next two days of sailing were a little like groundhog day, with the temps hitting the high 30`s and the predictable Ora coming in just after midday in time for the race start of 1pm. The race officers managed to get at least 3 races in each afternoon. I had a mixed bag of results, with my placing improving each afternoon as the breeze grew stronger. Jenna was having a good start to her regatta with some very consistent finishes in the top five. Day 4 saw the Teams Racing. A hotly contested event with Australia the reigning Champions. We put in one team made up of Barney Woo and Will Drew alongside Kristen and Travis Wadley from QLD. I had the privilege of spending the day out on the water supporting and cheering on our Aussie Team. What I witnessed was an amazing show of team work, which produced outstanding results. The last race saw us fighting it out with the Presidential Team (made up from sailors from Denmark and Hawaii) for 1 st place, which we won. Putting the Presidential Team in 2 nd and a team from Hawaii in 3 rd. Day 5 and the U/17 fleet was now divided into Gold and Silver, with all of us making it into the Gold Fleet. Temps were now hitting forty degrees, so getting onto the water was a relief from the heat in the boat park. The racing at the top end of the fleet was now very tough. I managed a couple of top 20 finishes, but then it went downhill from there with my results getting very inconsistent. Sean Herbert from NZ, who was dominating the earlier races and sitting comfortably in 1 st place, was also starting to have some inconsistent finishes. For the last few races the 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd placings were Jenna was having a great success in the U/13. The fleet was being dominated by the Kiwis with young Mathias Coutts sitting comfortably in 1 st place. She managed to hold onto 3 rd place in the U/13 and also take away the medal for the 1 st U/13 female. Congratulations to the U/13 podium winners, 1 st Mathias Coutts from NZ, 2 nd Pol Font Reyero from Spain and 3 rd our very own Jenna Everett. I would also like to say a thank you to a few people. Firstly Will Boulden for putting in an awesome effort on the water to coach and support us. To Travis Burtinshaw who spent countless hours with us over the few months before we left. To the club of Circolo Vela Arco for putting on a great regatta, we were well looked after by everyone and made to feel very welcome. And to Perth Dinghy Sailing Club and the Ron Tough Foundation for their support. Jono & Jenna

THE SIGNET Signet Signets Crossing the English Channel July 1963 by Paul Nicholson (reprinted by permission of the UK Signet Class Owners Association) Not long after the Signet was first launched in 1961, a number of Signet sailors wanted to show just how good the Signet was, not to mention demonstrate its seaworthiness to the sailing community and the general public, and probably also to readers of the Sunday Times which had originally sponsored the design of the Signet. This group of sailors included Group Captain FHL Searl, a well-known sailor from Emsworth (he ran the Emsworth Sailing School). Francis Henry Louis Searl was also known as "Crab" Searl, which had something to do with him flying biplane aircraft sideways. To show their confidence in the Signet, a plan was hatched to sail across from the English Channel in It required careful planning and the right weather in order to have a chance of being successful. Having planned it, there was good weather in July 1963, and so the crossing was attempted. They set off from St Margarets Bay, a shingle beach under the chalk cliffs between Dover and Deal. An enduring, two handed racing dinghy perfect for all levels, from beginner to veteran. A signet offers entry level sailors an easy platform from which to develop their sailing skills, right through to the serious competitor who enjoys very competitive, close racing. At 14ft in length, the Signet is similar in length to the popular skiff classes but is best described as a training dinghy after which the seasoned sailor can move up to skiffs like that of the Javelin, Cherub or International 14. The Signet is built to last, conventionally made of wood. The boat is easily launched with two people, with most boats using a beach trolley for easy storage, rigging and launching. The boats are easy to sail once familiar with their setup and offer the perfect training solution as it contains All aspects of the faster skiffs but in a more manageable setting. This boat is very stable, housing a main, a jib (front sail) and a spinnaker (for downwind sailing). These boats are of a standard design which gives them equal performance. Racing success therefore depends only the skill level of the skipper and crew. Signets crossing the English Channel and reaching the other side

DID YOU KNOW? Heron The Heron is a two person dinghy that is sailed in all states of Australia. The Heron was designed in the early 1950s by Jack Holt in the UK. The class was introduced to Australia in the late 1950s and has flourished in its new home. The Heron offers safe entry level sailing for novices but also provides an ongoing challenge for experienced sailors who are seeking to optimise performance. The Heron can be built in timber (using traditional framing or stitch and glue construction) or fibreglass. Second hand boats usually range in price from $500 to $8,000. A fully equipped new fibreglass boat bought off the shelf can be put on the water for approximately $12,500. Herons race in many metropolitan and country sailing clubs in all Australian states. Keenly contested State and National Championship regattas are held each year. The Heron has a long and proud history of family involvement. Many of the past class national championships have been won by parent/child crew combinations. A number of sailors who crewed in the Heron in the past have returned to the class with their own children to share the family sailing experience. The Heron was designed with a two piece (mast/gaff) gunter rig. A one piece (or Bermudan) mast has been introduced in recent years that gives similar performance. Both rigs can be used in competitive sailing. A larger headsail (genoa) has also been introduced for use by crews with a combined weight of 135 kgs or more. Use of this sail has allowed couples to sail together and compete on an even footing with lighter crews. The Crawley boatshed was originally owned by a Mrs Pretty who sold it to Claude Hendriques, both long-term residents of Wingfield Ave, Crawley. Mr Hendriques, an engineer for the Swan & Emu Breweries was the inventor of the Crown Seal which topped the King Brown beer bottles. The Perth City Council wanted to demolish the boatshed and considered it a blot on an otherwise clear landscape however a ruling was made that it could remain if it was not enlarged or improved. The Boatshed is currently owned by the Nattrass family and has been beautifully repaired and repainted.

Jay-Dee State Championship Report Koombana Bay Bunbury RESULTS 1st Thomas Devine Ethan Miragliotta 2nd Sam Rose Jon Everett 3rd Will Drew Barney Woo 4th Rosie Hennessy Jenna Everett The JD State Championships for this year were held on the Labour Day Long Weekend at Koombana Bay Sailing Club in Bunbury. It was great to see a fleet of six boats on the start line. Many of the sailors transitioning from Open Bics. Seven races were completed over the weekend under the watchful eye of RO Warren Drew. Bunbury delivered perfect conditions with great breezes, ensuring the kids had some thrilling rides. An opportunity for these young sailors to hone in on some new skills in sailing a two-handed skiff. After some great racing congratulations go to Thomas and Ethan on taking out the 2016/17 JD State Championship trophy.

29er Worlds Report Long Beach California USA We travelled to long beach California to compete in the US national championships and also the world championships which was held at Alamitos bay yacht club. We had a new boat arrive from Ovington for the worlds and the first day we arrived we found that the boat and mast were damaged in the container, it wasn t too bad and didn t affect us too much, we spent 2 days preparing the boat before we went sailing and the day we did go out for the first time was great, a 10 knot sea breeze and about 29 degrees. We chartered our own coach boat Shorty (with the best esky) and kept things simple and relaxed, we feel this was a big part in the way we were able to focus on sailing and just have fun as we did not feel any pressure. The other 11 Australian boats had coaches from Sydney and Tasmania with them. We took every day as it came and didn t think too much about the next day, we did think about the free power snacks after racing every day as they were awesome. The yacht club had so much food that there was also a free breakfast every day and at night Janine would cook some great meals for us so we were never hungry. EVENT DETAILS US Nationals. The US Nationals were held from the 25th to the 28th of July 2017 as a warm-up regatta before the World Championships at Alamitos Bay Yacht Club, California. 116 teams were registered to compete in the event. The first day of the event were 3 races which made up the qualifiers into the Gold and Silver fleets, with the second two days of racing being the finals. We qualified for Gold fleet and finished the finals in 19th place overall of 116 and 1st female team. World Championships. The Worlds were held from the 29th of July until the 5th of August at Alamitos Bay Yacht Club, California. 129 teams were registered to compete in the event. Three days of racing made up the qualifiers into the Gold, Silver and Bronze fleets with three more days of racing making up the final series. We qualified into the Gold fleet 11 th and first Australian boat and finished the finals in 18th place overall of 129 and 1st female team of 43.

29er Worlds Report (Continued) We trained a lot before we came over at least 4 times per week and before the worlds and we only had two short training sessions in long beach and then a day off before the first regatta, this was really good as it meant we were fresh and ready to go as over the time were there we knew that we had 30 races to do as most of the days were very long on the water as two of them were over seven hours. A range of conditions from 5 knots up to 25 knots and on the windy days the sea condition was quite big with very steep waves, the wind did not shift too much but the waves were something we were very aware of the whole time and also the weed. Every day we were on the course early which meant we had time to set up for conditions on the day and then some time to relax and plan our next race before racing started as the course was a long way out and on some days Chris towed us out there The most important part of the worlds for us was the qualifying regatta as to be in gold fleet we needed to be in the top 50 and the competition was very strong, during qualifying we knew that if we finished in the top 20 in our flight every race then we would get into gold fleet, this meant we were not under too much pressure and some of our best results were in the qualifying series in which we finished 11 th of 129 and first Australian boat. The finals were even tougher but we took it one start and one race at a time and didn t think of the final result until after the last race but we did know what we had to do, one of the highlights was finishing first in the second last race of the finals and we learnt a lot from the finals series that will help us in the future. The local people were so helpful and friendly especially, Pease and Jay Glaser who made us feel like family they spent a lot of time helping us while we were there advising on the conditions, Pease and her husband Jay live close by and have a sail making business in long beach. We would also like to thank Nicky Bethwaite and Robbie Dean for all their help as well. The things we learnt were not get too stressed as it s only a boat race and have fun as we feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to go. On the last day one of the sailors almost lost his life but was saved by some

29er Worlds Report (Continued) fast thinking people and this makes you realize what is important. We had the help of some very generous people, we would like to thank Geoff from ECG Engineering, Roy Lane from Lane Ford, Gill Australia, Jack from Altronic Distributors, Ronstan and CJW Marine for their support and also our parents Mike, Mel, Janine and Chris who without them this would not have been possible. We are travelling to Hong Kong in December for the 2018 worlds which are being held at Middle Island from the 3 rd till the 9 th of January Maddy & Annabelle CONGRATULATIONS! Management and Members of the Perth Dinghy Sailing Club congratulate Annabelle and Maddison, our newly crowned World Champions. Just reward for your dedication and efforts and we look forward to your future ventures.

Busy Bee Perth Waters Regatta BUSY BEE Sunday 15th October Our annual Busy Bee is this Sunday at 9am. Come down and lend a hand to ensure that our Club looks its absolute best for Opening Day Volunteer at PDSC The heart of our club are our volunteers. PDSC is completely volunteer operated. Without our volunteers, races would not be sailed, results would not be recorded, the club would not be cleaned or maintained, food and drinks would not be able to be purchased, no administration would be done or regatta management carried out. Please do not hesitate to come forward if you would like to lend a hand and help to run this great Club.

The Sloss Dynasty The 2017/18 season at PDSC welcomes young Stuart Sloss into the flag officer ranks. Stuart comes with a wealth of family history with PDSC, that deserves to be applauded. As Stuart steps up on our 115 th season opening day this year he will be the 3 rd generation and 4 th member of his family to do so. Stuarts grandfather Bruce`s interest in the then Perth 14Ft Dinghy Sailing Club started in the mid 1950`s. Talk of the construction of the Narrows Bridge was rife throughout the sailing fraternity of Perth. Bruce at the time was a member of Claremont Sailing Club, and his three sons, Rod, Garry and Neville were sailing VJ`s. At the time the club was still located over on Barrack Street. The club management at the time saw the need to relocate to the other side of the bridge, thus the search for a new location started. A lease was secured on a site on Hackett Drive. Bruce was involved in the building of the new club house, along with many other members who volunteered time and manpower to complete the construction of the building we have today. The new clubs official opening was at the 58th Season Opening Day in Bruce along with his wife Molly and three sons joined the membership and Bruce took on the role of Commodore in His three sons, spent many hours at the club sailing VJ`s and then moving onto I14`s. Stuarts Uncle Rod served as Commodore from and his father Garry served as Commodore from The Sloss Family sailing tradition continued with the arrival of Bruce s grandchildren, who all at some point sailed junior fleets at the club. Stuart continuing to this day in the I14 class. The long association with the club is recognized with the Life Memberships awarded to Bruce in 1965, Rod in 1977, Garry in 1982 and Stuarts Mum Judie in With Stuart still actively sailing and his young son Ethan just beginning his sailing journey, I m sure the tradition will continue on. Three Generations Bruce, Stuart and Garry.
