1 THE BURGEE Halifax Nova Scotia Canada August - September 2004 Do you know the name of this yacht? to aycwebmaster@eastlink.ca Photos by Patricia Flynn. Heading home to AYC, this beautiful yacht was just ahead of us. It made it s turn just past the Dingle and later dropped it s pick near the RNSYC. After enjoying the parade of Tall Ships, seeing this beauty in the North West Arm was a special treat for my daughter and I. Gregg Flynn COMMODORE S REPORT Mid August...where has the summer gone? Where have all the boats gone?? Seems like a lot of the Armdale community has found time to take advantage of a summer that has been much too short! That being said, there's still a fair bit of the of the season ahead, with lots going on. Make sure to check the calendar on the back page to keep up to date on all the happenings around the club. Just as importantly, whatever you're doing on the water this summer..do it safely. Just the other day I saw something that made me cringe. A small 24 ft day sailer motoring up the Arm with Dad at the tiller, and 3 young boys all under 10, scampering around the foredeck..not one of them wearing a life jacket. It was a tragedy waiting to happen. Lets make sure this sort of thing doesn't happen at Armdale. Not only do Armdale members have a responsibility to enjoy the water safely, we need to be seen to enjoy it safely. Let s set an example. For the rest of the summer... I'll see you on the water! Tommy Commodore Wi-Fi, or Wireless Fidelity, is now available to visitors as well as members of the AYC. Wi-Fi allows you to connect to the Internet from anywhere within the range of the AYC. Wi-Fi is a wireless technology like a cell phone. Wi-Fi enabled computers send and receive data indoors and out; anywhere within the range of a base station that is now located at AYC. This is first at only yacht club in Nova Scotia offering this service. Our thanks to SolutionInc Limited and Vista Care Communications for making this leap into the future happen at AYC. See and follow the links for detailed information.

I would like to publish some stories about Race week so please forward your stories and pictures. The Tall Ships Parade was a huge success. I missed the 2002 parade but this one sure made up for it. It was wonderful. My family and I enjoyed the day along with thousands who turned out. The committee, along with hundreds of volunteers, deserves a well earned Bravo Zulu. By the time this edition is distributed, it will be the end of August and time to start thinking about things to do to prepare the boat for the fall/winter season. For those of you who are planning to stay in the water, please inform Kristine of your intentions as soon as possible. This will allow her to plan work activities. Norman, our Yard Chairman, has put a few reminders in this issue and it would be wise to remember them. Enjoy the water, be safe... 3 TREASURER S REPORT When I was elected as Treasurer and presented my budget to the general members, I had two main messages I was attempting to deliver. The first was that the budget forecast revenues and expenditures were reasonable and attainable, and the second was that proper financial monitoring would be implemented to ensure the members could rely on the accuracy of the internal financial reporting. I stated when I was presenting the budget that we would request our external auditors prepare a 6 month interim financial statement as of June 30th, 2004 with comparative figures for same period last year. This way all of us would have confidence in the financial results being reported. We now have the auditor's report and I am pleased to advise the forecast revenues are right on target and our expenditures have been closely monitored. I am sure many of you already can see the improvements being undertaken and I am also pleased to report our finances are in good order. All bills are paid or current and we have a satisfactory bank balance to show for it. On a comparative basis our working capital is stronger than last year and this is a key element in how you measure financial success. Going forward, there is still much that needs fixing, which was identified in the Long Range Planning Report conducted several years ago by several past Commodores. I believe our finances are now in reasonably good order that the Management Committee can begin to prioritize over the short and mid term the needed repairs and improvements that have been deferred for too long. In closing I want to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of our general manager, Kristine Jagoe who has played a crucial role in our financial success. Brian Conrad Treasurer BORROW TO INVEST?? 4 FLEET CAPTAIN SAIL REPORT Hello Sailors, the racing season as I write this is well past the mid point but as you read this it is heading into the home stretch. The Fall Wednesday night series starts August 25, the final of the Solo Series is Aug 29. This series was met with enthusiasm and hopefully it will be included on the calendar next season. I believe it can grow into a very popular event. September features the Harbour Island Classic to be held on Sept 18 this year. This is one of our most popular and well attended races and I hope to see you all on the water (and not on the ground as some of us have been known to do during this race, especially at that beach just in front of the gut at Eastern Passage.). The AYC Club Championship starts on the following weekend with a Saturday, Sunday and the following Saturday races to count and the second Sunday reserved as a hurricane day, not that that ever happens at AYC.. Our final race of the season will be on October 23 so book your haul out for after that date. The Die Hard counts towards the Performance Cup for those of you who follow that event. Keep on racing, remember it is a fun excuse to get in your boat and go sailing. Norman Schneiderman, Fleet Captain Sail TO ALL AYC MEMBERS CRIB STARTS FRIDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2004 UPPER WARDROOM - 8:00PM $5.00/person Lots of great prizes and fun HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE Leslie Samson Order in the Locker Whether you have a big boat or a small one, finding all the vital gear in the lockers is often a challenge. Keeping gear easily accessible is not only easier on the nerves (and saves you money when you don't buy things you already have), but also can be an important factor in boating safety. If you can't find the extra fenders, lines or especially safety equipment when you need it, relatively simple matters can escalate into big problems. For those of you who are handy with a sewing machine (or know someone who is), you might consider making some simple bags to store gear. These can be cheaply made from the material that is used for covering outdoor lawn furniture - it is rot resistant and easy to sew on a regular machine. It is on sale now in several fabric stores. For example, I made a simple bag from this material for the hose I keep in my cockpit locker. First, I found a self-coiling hose at Canadian tire that measured about 2' by 9" when coiled up. Then I just made a bag a bit longer than that and added a single loop handle. I left a little extra room so that I didn't have to put the hose back exactly the same way every time for it to fit. I store the hose vertically in the locker and can easily reach the handle to pull it out of the locker. I have done the same thing with the emergency folding boarding ladder that the government regulations require small boat owners to have. There are many different approaches to the problem of finding what you need - from plastic boxes, buckets and bags. Make a visit to your neighbors and ask what unique ideas they have. Armdale is full of resourceful people and I am sure you'll find an idea that is just right for your boat. Valerie Baker Josephine 4

5 YARD CHAIRMAN S REPORT AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2004 Reminders to our Members: All used oil must be in closed containers before being placed for disposal in the proper area. We DO NOT accept gasoline, old batteries or propane cylinders, these are the members responsibility. PLEASE OBSERVE THE SIGNS PLACED AT THE DISPOSAL AREAS. (let s not forget this below) Also, we bring to your attention having a hurricane plan in place for your yacht, i.e. removal of all sails and dodgers including bridge enclosures to reduce the wind age. You also must have extra docklines and mooring bridles on your yacht. As much as we do not like to think about it we need to be checking our cradles for winter storage. Please check the condition of your cradle making any repairs as necessary for safe hauling of your yacht. If you are in doubt please check with Wade Henneberry, Yard Foreman. We bring to your attention that your membership number must be on all cradles, tenders and yachts as this will assist the yard staff and yard committee in identifying these items when the yard and tender rack are cleaned up. 7 FLEET CAPTAIN CRUISE REPORT Dear AYC Members: This summer has been an eventful and fun summer on the water. The Rogues Roost weekend of July 1st was well attended with 17 boats enjoying fun, food and family games. We also raised $ for the metro food banks by selling tickets on drawn prizes. This event was hosted by Janice Cook (The Admiral) and Dianne Manuel (The Other Admiral). The girls had a lot of fun with the prize draws and kid s games. The weekend was a great success by all accounts! The trip to the south shore started in the fog and rain on Friday, Aug 6, but soon was well underway in Mahone Bay and again a lot of fun and great weather. The corn boil and bon fire was held at Backman's Island Tues night and 13 boats were in attendance. Beach games and even an eat the volleyball contest (Thanks to that fun and fine dog Houch), singsongs on the beach, water skiing, (Yours truly made more of a submarine than a skier)made for a wonderful event in all. Looking forward to next year s long cruise to... Up and coming events are the fishing rodeo, Sat. Aug 28 and the poker run, Sat. Sept. 11. Details of both events will be posted in the cruisenooze bulletin boards. There will also be the Wreck Cove raft-ups still on most weekends so, see you on the water. Respectfully submitted, Dave Hickey FCC Sweet Apple Catering - the exclusive caterer at the Armdale Yacht Club has a well-known reputation for exceptional events, outstanding food and superb service.
