1 The Chowder Chatter Monthly Newsletter of the Caloosahatchee Marching and Chowder Society Next Full Moon: October 17 October 2005 WHAT S IN YOUR WALLET? Tuesday, September 20, 2005 will long be remembered in the history of the Caloosahatchee Marching and Chowder Society. Did we ever have a party!! One hundred twenty-nine members and guests gathered for our Open House and General Membership Meeting. We had a ball. Of the many guests who signed in, two were from Punta Gorda, two from out of state, four from Fort Myers Beach, nine from Fort Myers and nineteen were from Cape Coral. Our guests were very impressed with this fun-filled evening. We expect quite a few of these guests to sign on for membership. The Club was decorated beyond belief. Thirty large flags from boating and marine manufacturers as well as a room full of signal flags and burgees covered all four walls. Who did all the decorating? Russell and Kathleen Vance, Tom Buckard, Steve Romaine, Mel Rudd, Dick Mullins and Elise Missall. Thanks so much everyone. We had eighteen nautically decorated cakes made by our members. You had to be there to believe the ideas and beauty of the cakes. How our Mystery Master of Culinary Delights was able to rank them in order for the thirteen prizes was fantastic. The top three prizes went to Kathy Buckard, Kay MacDougall and Dee Vaigl. After the prizes were awarded, the room charged the cake tables like the Vikings and pillagers from the Capitol One credit card commercial. The great pots of coffee were donated to CMCS by our neighbor on 47th Terrace Beatniks. Thanks, Kathy. Ron Maddix, CMCS Chairperson of Clubhouse Programs, introduced our speaker, Paul Clarcq. Paul is the Administrative Officer for the Cape Coral Power Squadron (CCPS). Paul welcomed us to the CCPS and made a presentation of the programs offered by the CCPS. We thanked Paul, as Ron was trying to get him out of his starched uniform and into a CMCS tee shirt, the official uniform of our Club. Coming up is the Festival of the Islands Regatta on Saturday, October 1, 2005, followed by a great social hosted by Tom and Kathy Buckard. The weekend of October 7, 8, and 9 is a cruise to Tween Waters. Speaking of cruising, we are looking for a member to lead our Halloween Cruise to Danger Island scheduled for October 28, 29 and 30. If you are interested, please let me know. Let s continue to have a great CMCS The best, Russell COMMODORE Russell Vance

2 Vice Commodore Elise Missall A SUCCESSFUL SUMMERSET REGATTA 2005 The race to Naples on September 3rd began with 41 racers and 7 cruisers monitoring their every move. Committee boats were in place with the media and cameras in attendance...and they're off!!!!! A start to a CMCS race is very exciting and one you shouldn't miss. And the publicity this year was extraordinary... thanks to Steve Romaine It was a typical Summerset race with little wind at the start, but it certainly picked up by the time they began arriving in Naples with a storm front that came through. Though wet, they all reported that it was a great race. The cocktail party at the Comfort Inn was well attended in spite of a few rain showers...great food, lots of beer and warm camaraderie. Two offshore races were held on Sunday with some keen competition and better winds. At the same time, the cruisers were enjoying the Naples waters. A special treat was hosted by Bob and Karen Gerry on "Messin About" with Waite and Mary Alexander on "Island Time". A cookout was produced for 17 folks on Keewaydin Island, which was reached by dinghy with grills, umbrellas and table in tow...a sight to see!!! The Awards Dinner held at the Naples Sailing and Yacht Club on Sunday evening was attended by 181 racers, cruisers and assorted friends. Racing trophies were presented by Diane Fowler, Rear Commodore of Racing, and wonderful Door Prizes (47 in all) were distributed by Commodore Russell Vance and his sidekick Ray Gheradini. A raffle was held for the Colgate Sailing School $ sailing course and an auction was held for an Olsen Marine haul-out, a Jacquee Krause watercolor portrait of the winner's boat; and, compliments of Jay Wheeler, a 1/2 day cruise for four people. Fabulous framed awards were designed by Mary Naylor with her own photography of the winners' boats under sail. These were presented at the Open House on September 20th. This 2005 Summerset Regatta was successful due to a very hardworking and enthusiastic Committee, generous sponsors, wonderful door prizes, and CMCS membership participation. We were able to realize a profit of $2,683.57, a portion of which will be awarded to the Edison Sailing Center in downtown Fort Myers. I would like to thank each and everyone involved in Summerset Regatta it was great fun!! So, let's do it again next year...on to Summerset Regatta 2006!!!!! Smooth Sailing, Elise Ladies Bridge Club Mary Lou Mullins TIED UP IN KNOTS or KNOWING THE ROPES? September found us at Paradise Pizza in Cape Coral, enjoying pizza and hearing about extended cruising to the Bahamas. Thank you Cindy Carlino, Doreen Milbrandt, Kathy Light and Lynn Ratliff for sharing your photos and experiences. Also, Deedee Cheek for bringing her Bahama provisioning list. At 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 4, we will be learning and practicing knots at Mary Lou Mullins, 5010 SW 11th Avenue, Cape Coral. Directions are as follows: Cape Coral Pkwy. to Skyline, turn left on Skyline, turn 1st right (SW 51st Terrace) turn right on SW 11th Ave., #5010 on left side. We will have practice cleats, line and dowels; individual diagrams for each LBC attendee. Knots were such an important skill on sailing vessels that an honorable discharge from service was marked, at one time, with the term knows the ropes. Land-side it still means a person with experience and skill. Fleas Anyone? The itch has been there since a Marine Flea Market was first proposed earlier this year. By popular demand, we are planning to have a CMCS Marine Flea Market at our November Meeting. The big picture would look something like this: We would reserve a table for each CMCS vendor. The cost would be $ You bring in your marine treasures to see, trade, barter, exchange, unload or dump on an honest looking member. The honest looking member, appearing not really interested in anything you have, will ask uninteresting questions, maybe about an item they really do not even want. Is this right up the shrewd vendors alley? Should we find out? Right now, we are in the early idea state of this even. Let me know what you think before the November Chowder is published. Thanks, Russell 2

3 Liberty Ashore Monica Smith BUSY SOCIAL SEASON HURRICANE SOCIAL Thanks to all who came out and attended the Hurricane Social on Saturday, September 17. Steve Robins & Nancy Donaldson fixed a Category 5 Meal. Dee Vaigl asked the questions and Kathy Light won the weather facts quiz. We all know entirely too much about hurricanes! THANK YOU, STEVE & NANCY and all your helpers for a terrific evening. OPEN HOUSE - WOW! WOW! WOW! It is wonderful to have a nice cool, clean and spacious place to socialize and hold our CMCS meetings. If you did not make it on Tuesday, September 20, you missed out on seeing the ELITE cakes made by Club members. Great attendance. Many thanks to the Decorating Team. OPEN GRILL NIGHT Mark your calendars: Tuesday, October 11, 6:00 p.m. Our grills will be fired up hot and ready for you to grill your steaks, hams & hots, chicken or shish-ka-bobs!!! Please bring a side dish to share; enough for four people. CMCS Publicity Steve Romaine What do fifteen people, four on the water, words, 6 lenses, and sixty photographs have in common with the Summerset Regatta? 1. Fifteen persons employed by our local media wrote stories about, photographed, approved, edited or managed the more than eighteen articles printed in newspapers and magazines. 2. Four professional photographers were aboard the Press Boat and at the starting line off Ft. Myers Beach words have been printed to date in six newspapers about Summerset and about our move and Open House. 4. Six lenses were used by the professionals to bring the Regatta story to light, including file photos from previous years. 5. Sixty photographs have been published of the racing yachts, making our boats look GREAT! The CMCS Publicity Department wishes to thank the following club members and media employees for their efforts. CMCS MEMBERS: 1. Frank Kminek, press boat skipper who, with first mate, Ray Gheradini, supplied his boat, picked up and delivered the photographers to the starting line, and returned them safely to port. 2. Karen Gerry, Debra George and Mary Lou Mullins, who delivered to Naples or returned our regatta bulletin boards. CMCS Publicity continued on Page 4 3

The efforts of these folks are very much appreciated. Also, local TV station reporters who met with me, received press releases, notices of races, and were invited on our press boat, but were unable to schedule us this year as in the past. They and the viewers would have had a special treat with the spinnaker start at the beach. Oh well. Wait until next year! CMCS Publicity (continued next column) THANKSGIVING CRUISE PREVIEW November 23-28, 2006 Cruise Directors: Waite & Mary Alexander Plan now for the Thanksgiving Cruise to Panther Key and Calusa Island Marina in Goodland. 5 Diane Fowler Rear Commodore of Racing Summerset-- Where do I begin?? With a 9 knot breeze, 42 boats crossed the start line Saturday morning heading south for the gate & Naples finish line. Then, we had the doldrums, a light breeze, a dead zone; and, finally, a freshening breeze with a storm nearby. Pouring rain engulfed us at 4 :00 p.m.; it was a GREAT time to be a racer! Sunday, knot winds (I think! My wind gauge was struck by lightening Sat. at 4:10 p.m.) Steady breezes carried sportboats & spinnakers on upwinddownwind courses while the non-spins & true cruisers "duked it out" around the triangle courses. 2 races were held on Sunday (2nd race ran a little long, and we dashed for the dinner). Overall, we could not have asked for better weather! We all LOVED the quick, closed hulled sail home on Monday. An unofficial race ensued between Shadowfax & Windy City. Guess who won? Results posted on website. Special thanks to helpers: Jeanne & Jeff Butzer, Tom & Karen Swanbeck, Vince & Debbie Rogero, Tom & Kathy Buckard, Mike Schedel, Paul Perisho, Mary Naylor and Carol Robinson. If you see these folks "out & about", but sure to buy them a drink & say THANK YOU. We appreciate our volunteers & could not have a race without them! HURRICANE RACE: September 17 - Paul Perisho did a fabulous job of running this race, as I was in Chicago. 9 boats started in light winds. Unfortunately, the light air turned into NO wind, and the race had to be cancelled. Maybe next year we'll call this the UNhurricane race?? NEXT UP: Saturday, October 1, a Boat of the Year Event: Festival of the Islands. 3 races starting at 9:30 am. with a social following at 6 p.m. at the new, improved CMCS Clubhouse. DEADLINE: Wed, Sept. 28 at 5 p.m. Skipper's meeting, Thurs, Sept. 29 at 7:30 p.m. Hope to see you THERE! October 8-9 is now a CRUISE to Tween Waters.. Oct SUNDAY - is the NO Boca Race. Paul Perisho will be running it again, as I will be in Australia!! 2 races, 10 am. start. SEE THE WEBSITE FOR THE ENTRY FORM. Skipper's meeting October 20. It's back! The beginner's race class! 6:30 p.m./ regular skipper's meeting at 7:30 p.m. Come on out & have some FUN!! EIGHT BELLS (The end of the watch) It is with sadness that we announce the death of Bud Bone, Jr. (Boat: Lazy Bones), a relatively new member to CMCS. Memorial services are being planned. Elise Missal knew Bud since she was twelve years old, and they reconnected when he and Ruthie moved to Cape Coral four years ago. We extend our condolences and prayers of comfort to Bud s wife, Ruth, and family. Former CMCS member, Harry E. Horn passed away on 22, 2005, after a courageous encounter with ALS (Lou Gehrig s disease) and spent the past 18 months being an involved and passionate activist for the disease. Harry always found the best in people, and he helped many discover the best about themselves. He was a former local news anchor. Harry loved to go out and get the story. He loved it so much he named his boat On Assignment. That is how he would like you to remember him...simply that he has left on another assignment. His wife, Toni, family and friends all over the world will deeply miss his caring, vitality and love. Has someone this year made an effort that you greatly appreciated: found your dinghy, retrieved your anchor or towed you off a sandbar??? Take a moment to consider nominating a deserving CMCS Member.
