Ray and I have been in Chicago for six (6) weeks this summer and everything keeps going on schedule! That s because of the wonderful people who all contribute a little. many hands make light work. NOW...you should start thinking about what position YOU want to hold in 2007! NEW MEMBERS: this is a great way to meet everyone. We can even have 2-3 people share some positions (Sail Mate, Bartender, Liberty Ashore, Chowder Chatter). Please start looking around and volunteer for a leadership role in Each officer and/or committee head has been keeping notes/report, so you will have a blueprint to work from. Don t make me call YOU! September looks ahead to be a busy month of races, social at Hurricane Harry s on September 16, Monthly Meeting on September 19, and the Festival of the Island Social on September 30 (see coupon on page 5). 2 Rear Commodore Forrest Banks st Annual Summerset Regatta Sail the Tradition Sponsored by CMCS Labor Day Weekend 2006 Race, Cruise, Party NOW HEAR THIS! We are taking reservations for the Summerset Awards Dinner on Sunday evening, September 3 at the Naples Sailing and Yacht Club*., 896 River Point Drive, Naples, FL A first class dinner will be provided by the NSYC for $30 each, including tax and tip, in a beautiful setting with great friends. Nothing comparable any place else in Naples. EVERYONE is welcome to attend the awards dinner. Deadline to purchase dinner tickets is Tuesday, August 29, Send checks to Marla Parker, 1510 Braman Avenue., Ft. Myers, FL The 41st Summerset Regatta is cocked and ready to go. One of the last pieces in place was the organization of the committee boat fleet. We have a lot of wonderful sponsors, raised money, printed tee shirts, door prizes are in hand and youth sailing clubs are going to benefit. We need participants: cruising and racing. An entry gets you one tee shirt, a $10 WEST MARINE gift certificate, a haul-out from OLSENS, duffel bags from HARKEN and QUANTUM, gloves, sandals, a Waterway Guide for South Florida, and an air conditioner check up. Also, the piece de resistance: a $1,200 Garmin hand-held GPS with nautical and highway charts. The Summerset Committee has raised the Regatta organization up a notch. The level of sponsor support is unbelievable. Participation by sailing entries is necessary if we want to maintain this level and grow. CMCS is going to be so proud of its support of the youth sailing groups. *Driving directions to NSYC: From I-75, going South, take Exit 16, Pine Ridge Road, west to Goodlette Frank Rd. Go left until you meet 5th Avenue (US41). Turn left, crossing the Gordon River Bridge, turn right at the next stoplight onto River Point Drive. The NSYC is at the end of River Point Drive. Summerset Sunday Cruise Directors Waite & Mary Alexander (Island Time) Jim & Dee Vaigl (Irish Mist) or SUMMERSET SUNDAY CRUISE Cruisers come join Waite and Mary Alexander (Island Time) and Jim and Dee Vaigl (Irish Miss) on the cruise and picnic to Hurricane Pass on Keewaydin Island on Summerset Sunday. This is a great anchorage with beautiful beaches on both the Pass side and the Gulf side for beachcombing and swimming. BYOL (Bring Your Own Lunch) - we will provide beer, wine and soda. You can take your own boat or come with us on our boats. If you would like to bring your dinghy, we will be glad to tow it. Let us know at the Cocktail Party on Saturday, if you plan to join us. Rear Commodore of Racing Tom Gore I had hoped to be able to give you a better result than this when the Board of Directors gave its approval for me to look into changing the way SWFPHRF conducted the Boat of the Year races. I had thought that having our (and each sailing clubs ) local races count as a means to get to a large BOTY Regatta would stimulate interest in local racing and also give rise to a great once a year regatta. I was aware that several of the BOTY regattas were conducted by yacht clubs with very few sailors with sailboats as members. These yacht clubs held regattas for their own purposes before BOTY began. However, when BOTY as begun, these regattas were made BOTY regattas. I had come to the conclusion that the BOTY regattas were harming our monthly races because of conflicts and the distances involved to attend these events. However, I was unable to sell my idea to those who made the decisions about BOTY. The total number of BOTY regattas was reduced to six or seven, but none of them end in Fort Myers. We have Summerset as our only BOTY regatta, and it is held principally in Naples. Perhaps, others can do better in the future if this change doesn t stimulate local racing which, I think, is the backbone of racing. 2

4 WILEY PARKER NAMED PRESIDENT OF WFLPHRF Wiley Parker, who grew up sailing in Fort Myers, has been elected President of West Florida Performance Handicap Racing Fleet. Wiley has served as Chairman of the WFPHRF Rating Committee, Secretary/ Treasurer and Director of WFLPHRF during the last five years. He served twice as CMCS Rear Commodore of Racing and our representative to WFLPHRF for years. Wiley and Marla own and race Coyote and prior to that No Sheets. We appreciate their present and past contributions to CMCS and heartily congratulate Wiley on his new major leadership role. Wiley appreciates the service that CMCS Members have given WFLPHRF in the past. He hopes that even more members will join, take an active role such as CMCS Member Paul Perisho has done recently. No only is Paul now our Area Representative, but also a Rating Committee Member of WFLPHRF. CMCS SHINES IN WFLBOTY FINAL RESULTS The Boat of the Year (BOTY) final scores have been tallied. CMCS yachts had more top three awards than any other club in SW Florida. Forrest Banks Midnite Rider took top honors in the Spinnaker Class. Steve Romaine s Air Supply won the Non- Spinnaker Class and Diane Fowler s Windy City took Third in the True Cruising Class. Over 40 racing yachts were scored in each of these classes and together these three boats raced in over 75 races from Charlotte Harbor to Key West. John & Aline Hyatt managed to place Third in the Sport Boat Class in spite of racing major melges regattas in Gone Mad all over the state. Ned Christensen s Passion III and Doug French s Tri-umph won Second and Third respectively in the Multi-hull competion. Both are repeat top Three Annual SWBOTY Award Winners. Congratulations to each of the award winners and the crews on achieving their goals. Also, to all those that competed to make our racing, camaraderie, and socials enjoyable. And to WFLPHRF for supplying and awarding the beautiful trophies. CHESAPEAKE ODYSSEY OF A SUN ODYSSEY 35 By Steve and Cindy What??? Romaine went on an extensive cruise up north, Air Supply, is not back yet, and he is not going to race his boat in Summerset or other events until mid-november!! What is Cindy putting in his drinks? Yes, it s true, Air Supply, is on the hard in Deltaville, Virginia. After leaving in May and a great trip so far, Cindy & Steve flew back to SWFL in early August after travelling as far north as Baltimore s Inner Harbor to participate in Jeanneau s Rendevous. CMCS Members Chuck and Doreen Milbrandt sailed south and then north with Steve and Cindy for the first 10 days. We sailed offshore most of the time when they were aboard says Steve. Doreen is great cutting crab traps from your prop, too. The Inland Waterway is tedious, and we had to stay in more marinas than planned due to the oppressive heat. Swimming pools were very welcome. Excessive wind and storms caught us in Beaufort, SC (TS Alberto) 48K., Roanoke Island Manteo, NC 42K., and Portsmouth, VA 60 K, with hail. Cindy kept smiling through it all (HA!) along with Steve s nine year old grand-daughter, Sarah, who joined the crew in Virginia. In addition to the Jeanneau Rendevous, there were family gatherings in Corolla, NC and Smithfield, VA. Lots of interesting, historic, and hard to get at portsof-call made the trip very interesting to date. Roanoke Island Festival Park and the Lost Colon; Tangier Island and Crisfield, MD the crab capital of the USA; Fort Monroe Old Point Comfort, VA Museum; Yorktown, VA and Cornwallis s Surrender 225 years ago. Solomon Island, MD hosted the Screwpile Racing (4 days, 144 racers, 3 courses Steve didn t race, he just went to the parties!) Deltaville, VA with its almost 4,000 boats (mostly sail) and a population of only 1,000 residents; and St. Michael s, MD with the Chesapeake Bay Museum are all just some of the highlights. Continued on Page 5 4

5 Continued from Page 4 CHESAPEAKE ODYSSEY OF A SUN ODYSSEY 35 Passing the numerous lighthouses, experiencing the engineering feat it was to build the Inland Waterway, the beauty of our East Coast rivers, the feeling of awesome power of the USA when one passes close to our numerous warships docked in Norfolk, VA. WOW! We met many interesting cruisers along the way including Candice & Rick Thiele of Wings (Caliber 40 ), Cape Coral (met in SC) and Kay and Ken Olinger of Starboard Tack (Pearson 38 ) Ft. Myers Beach (met in NC). Both of these couples will be attending our Monthly CMCS Meeting upon their returns. In addition to the above couples sharing their information about the Chesapeake, Inland Waterway, etc., others have been most helpful. CMCS Members Kathy & Jay Light, Paul Steinman, Ray Harris, Cecil Hazen, and Skip Hyde all have lent charts, cruising guides, made notes of their firsthand experiences in transversing the thousands of miles of East Coast Waterways. To all of them, we are most grateful and to Chuck and Doreen, our Florida Cruise Mates, we say Thank You. Steve and Cindy Liberty Ashore Monica Smith HURRICANE HARRY SOCIAL Saturday, September hours After the Hurricane Race, we will meet at Hurricane Harry s Waterfront Grill & Bar, 3448 Marinatown Lane, N.
