From time-to-time, we have all changed our addresses for one reason or another. If you re like me, I sometimes forget to save my address book and have to start all over from scratch. In doing so, you may forget to tell everyone what your new e-mal address is. I have found over the course of this past year several coming back as undeliverable...address unknown...etc.. All probably for the aforementioned reason or I may have entered your address into our database incorrectly. If your name is listed below, I do not have your current address and cannot inform you of last minute changes or important club info we think you d like to know. 2 VICE COMMODORE Russell Vance ~ Champagne and Conch Horns The Thanksgiving cruise to Panther Key was wonderful. Notwithstanding the 22 knot winds from the south on day one, the weather was beautiful and accommodating the other five days. The best moment of the trip occurred early Friday evening. You see, many of us were concerned we were not going to be available to attend the funeral of our friend and shipmate Cy Cochrane. We spoke to Cy s long time friend, Bob Macomber about the dilemma. Bob assured us that a toast on the beach, at sunset would be a happy moment for Cy. So with a large cold bottle of champagne for everyone and two conch horns at the ready, we made a small eulogy and toast to Cy as the sun set. So long Pal, it was good to know you. The CMCS calendar for 2005 will be going to press in the next week or so. Be sure your membership renewal form and check have been submitted. We want to make sure that your name and boat name will be in the calendar. As you know, cruising for 2005 will be run by committee. The term "by committee" in this case means each one of our cruisers will assume the responsibility for one of the trips. We expect to have about 17 cruises on the calendar for We now have about 10 of these cruises assigned, (mostly the ugly ones), with 7 remaining. This is where you come in. We want you to volunteer to be the cruise commodore for one of the trips. All are local, and 4 are weekend anchorages. What s the point? To get you involved in the club. Call me ( ) and we can discuss the dates. The new year also brings up our 16 social events. Each event requires a chairperson. We have about 10 of these events assigned, (mostly the ugly ones), with 6 remaining. If you would like to volunteer to chair one of the events, or help at one of the events, please call me. Let s continue to have a wonderful CMCS Although the racing season has been completed, we still have the Holiday Cruise to Burnt Store Marina. And don t forget to respond to Elise Missall regarding the Annual Change of Watch Dinner, January 14th, Be sure to volunteer and participate in as many club activities as you can. 3 REAR COMMODORE CRUISING Waite Alexander ~ Thanksgiving Cruise In spite of the very strong breeze out of the south the fleet braved the elements and arrived at Champney Bay in Naples in time for cocktails on Air Supply. Unfortunately, Ix had engine trouble and had to return home, but Ron and Shirley joined us by car later at Goodland. We spent Thanksgiving Day enroute to Panther Key. As it was still breezy we opted to cruise down the inside route. There was a considerable surge by the beach at Panther Key but there was ample anchorage space further in where we could get out of the surge. Tom and Kathy Buckard were hosts for a great potluck and cocktail party on Thor's Hammer. On Friday I led the group on a thirty minute dinghy tour to Dismal Key. On the way back I decided on a slightly longer route which turned into a two and half hour ride. They said I was lost but I really wasn't. It's just that land marks were in the wrong places. The committee had a meeting and decided I had entertained the group with the 'thirty minute - three hour' tour so I have been awarded the Entertainment Flag for showing them parts of Everglades National Park that had never been seen before by anyone. However, it was a close contest. While we were on this dinghy tour Cecil and Danny Hazen's Desperado drug anchor and drifted through the entire fleet without damaging anything. Eric Milbrandt on Fidelis and Bob Gerry on Messing About were able to get Desperado reanchored. After arriving back Russell Vance and I went on a rescue mission. Three good looking young females were in a canoe trying to paddle to Panther Key against a very strong current. The young ladies were very grateful for our assistance until we took a short cut through a narrow mangrove channel. While towing through this channel the canoe veered off to one side, hit a mangrove branch and one of the girls was knocked overboard. We were able to get her back in the canoe without capsizing it and continued to Panther Key. While on the beach on Friday afternoon watching the most beautiful sunset we have ever seen, we held a memorial ceremony in honor of Cy Cochran, who recently passed away. We then enjoyed a great bonfire and pot-luck dinner. Sunday we headed to Calusa Island Marina in Goodland and had our delicious stone crab-cracking party with more pot-luck dinner. The CMCS ladies do know how to cook. After a dinghy ride to MarGood grocery-museumcafe for breakfast on Sunday morning we returned to Champney Bay for another cocktail party. Cruisers were Desperado, Fidelis, Dawn Treader, Shadowfax, Thor's Hammer, Island Time, Messing About and Air Supply. It was a great cruise and ended with a nice comfortable trip home on Monday. Holiday Cruise December 28, January 1, 2005 The final cruise of the year will be the Holiday Cruise, December 28 through Jan. 1. Plans are to go to Hurricane Hole for two days, then to Matlacha for one night and invade Bert's Bar, then to Burnt Store for New Year's Eve. We have two rooms reserved at Marina Inn Hotel at Burnt Store Marina and will celebrate New Year's Eve there. Bring a dish to pass for pot-luck dinner, BYOB and your own set-ups. Come and join us to see the New Year in. For entering Hurricane Hole we will place small floating markers - leave to starboard -close. I personally surveyed this - so Good Luck!!! 4 LADIES BRIDGE CLUB Mary Lou Mullins ~ New Years Resolution: Join the Ladies Bridge Club! Thank you Cindy Naumann and co-hostess Cheri Johnson for a terrific Christmas Party. Everyone brought their favorite dishes, and no effort was made to control tasting everything. Twenty-three CMCS "ladies" participated in the Yankee Grab Bag following the Pirates Creed of Ethics. There were so many terrific gifts to choose from and several Bridge Club members were able to choose several times over their favorite selections. Vice Commodore Vance will certainly take notice of the glow-in-the-dark switchblade type knife that Kathleen took home! As we will be busy taking down holiday decorations and keeping New Year's resolutions, there will be no January meeting of the Ladies Bridge Club. I am looking forward to a year of camaraderie and how-to monthly programs both on the water and land. Any ideas, suggestions or program volunteers are greatly appreciated. 5 REAR COMMODORE RACING Tom Horner ~ CMCS Commodore Cup Race Results After notifying all the competitors that the race was to be rescheduled from Saturday to Sunday due to unduly rough weather on Saturday, the first race began at 11:00 am. Sunday. The second race followed immediately after the completion of the first race beginning at 12:35 am. Each race was completed within the required time limit. This year's Commodore Cup saw 10 boats entering the 2 race series held off Fort Myers Beach near the San Carlos light on a sunshiny day in winds of knots with occasional gusts slightly higher. The seas were relatively flat with long rolling swells of 2-3 ft. The CMCS fleet was comprised of 1 Multi- hull, 2 Spinnaker boats, 4 Non-spinnaker boats, and 3 True Cruising boats. Tides were exceptionally low this weekend causing the two Spinnaker boats and one of the True Cruising boats to be unable to bring their boats to the starting area. Since 3 boats are required to form a racing class, the remaining 2 True Cruising boats joined the 4 Non-spinnaker boats to bolster the Non-spinnaker fleet to 6 boats. The committee boat was a 40' Jefferson Trawler easily visible to all sailboats racing. The first race sailed consisted of a course of 4.9 miles composed of a triangle plus a windward leg with a finish to leeward (i.e. modified Olympic course) by the Multihull fleet. The Non-spinnaker fleet sailed a 2.9 mile triangle course. The second race consisted of a course of 2 triangles of 5.8 miles sailed by the Multi-hull fleet and a 5 mile modified Olympic course (triangle plus windward and leeward legs with a downwind finish) sailed by the Non-spinnaker fleet. The low-point system of scoring was inforce for this 2 race series. The final results are found on page 2. The entire race results will also be posted on the CMCS website at www. cmcs-sail.org and the Chowder Chatter. Congratulations to all participating sailors, both skippers and crew! Yours truly, enjoyed a great day of racing this afternoon as your club's PROfor-a-day and I hope you did, too. Thank you, Godspeed, and a cheerful, warm and Happy Holiday season to you and yours! Tom REAR COMMODORE RACING Diane Fowler ~ Another active racing year is ahead for CMCS in Note the January dates for the Winter Races and Skipper s Meeting has been changed from what was stated in the last issue of the Chowder Chatter. The Skipper s Meeting will be Thursday, January 13th at 7:30 p.m., with the races set for Sunday January 16th. The Chili Cookoff Race is set for Saturday, January 29th with the Skipper s Meeting to be held at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 27th. At 6:30 p.m. on the 27th, a Skipper s Meeting will be held for the Rookie Race. All those rookies who would like to learn the easy ins and outs of racing will be tutored by Dale Johnston. Come on out, hone your sailing skills and prepare for racing on Saturday. Don t forget the social after the races to be held in the clubhouse beginning at 6:00 p.m. Also note that the next race in the area Golden Conch is January 8th and 9th in Punta Gorda (PPYC). Diane You re Invited to a House Warming January 22, 2005 at 2540 El Dorado Pkwy West. (Directions: Take Cape Coral Pkwy. west to Chiquita, south to El Dorado; then west) hosted by Diane Fowler & Ray Gherardini. NO GIFTS, just bring a snack (and exotic drinks, if you want). We ll provide the beer, wine, sodas. 4 p.m -?? Open house. Sunset at 5:45 p.m. Casual dress/optional swimsuits (the spa is on). RSVP See you there!! 5

6 SUNFISH GURU minutes, the fleet decided that socializing on shore sounded like more fun. Tying up in a line, one after another, behind the Race Committee Boat, manned by Steve Olive and the infamous "Silver Surfer" Scott Sutton, the fleet proceeded to be towed back to shore, but not until doing a scenic tour of the Centennial Park shoreline to see how the crowd at "Taste of the Town" was doing. A couple hours of socializing around the cooler and grill made up the rest of the afternoon - Lots of fun!! John Kremski ~ November 7th Races We had thirteen boats enter, and all but two made it across the finish line before the wind died. Sailing a triangle -windward -leeward course, Jack Scragg found his own private wind on the downwind leg, and pulled a convincing lead on the rest of the fleet, no one could catch up with him. After drifting around the race course for about ten Challenge Cup Regatta: Some of the Best Racing This Year! Twelve sunfishers came out to enjoy a gorgous weekend of racing, comaraderie, and good food. Saturday had light air and a wicked outgoing tide against the wind, challenging everyone, while on Sunday the wind picked up to a comfortable sailing breeze, and the tide lightened. Very close racing, with one race the third, fourth and fifth place boats were literally within inches of each other at the finish, and another in which the lead switched no less than five times! A total of eight races were sailed, with no throw-outs (and no general recalls!) Congratulations to first place finisher Jack Scragg; Second Place Mike Alexander, and Third Place Danny Escobar. Thanks go to Ross Webb and his gang of master bar-b-que-ers for the great steak, chicken and chowder dinner on Saturday night, and the Kids from the Edison Sailing Center who manned the Race Committee Boat and the chase boat. These young people did a great job setting square courses, starting the races (and calling the "over earlies") and scoring the results. They re-set the marks quickly and accurately between nearly every race to keep the fleet happy!! Our next race will be the start of the 2005 season, on Sunday, January 23 (to avoid conflicting with the PHRF Winter Regatta), with a noon skipper meeting and a 1 p.m. start, at the Edison Sailing Center If you haven't been out in a while, drag that sunfish out of the backyard and come on out for a great day! If you don't have a sunfish and would like to use one of the club boats, let me know & I will reserve one for you. See you on the water! John Kremski 6

Journal Entry: Thu, 2 Dec 2004 The biggest thing that happens around here is the arrival and departure of the many cruise ships. Close to 20,000 people descending on the marketplace. Talk about congestion on these narrow streets! Reminds me of SW Florida during the "season"! A couple of days after Dan, Gene and Bill left, the winds finally slowed down. For the past week they have been in the 8 to 12 knot range. I can now relocate at my will, even if the winds are blowing hard. Journal Entry: Wed, 08 Dec 2004 Three days in a row last week, St. Thomas airport tied a recoed low temperature set in for the low. For me, still a very plesant sleeping temperature. I am doing great, walking alot and swimming some. And of course drinking rum drinks with lime to fight off the scurvy. Journal Entry: Wed, 15 Dec 2004 This past weekend I turned my home, Passion III, into a sailboat. Some friends and I sailed over to Christmas Cove, on Great St. James Island, just east of St. Thomas, and spent the day. What a beautiful cove. Wonderfully clear water, sandy bottom for good holding, and almost entirely devoid of the winds that were blowing about 15 to 20 knots at the time.
