1 The FROM THE COMMODORE - Greg Warner YACHT TALK The Voice of the Richland Yacht Club May 2012 The weather has finally provided us a few days of encouragement that boating season may have returned. Welcome again to our many new Members and welcome back to everyone who we may not have seen for awhile. Rear Commodore Margo has many exceptional events upcoming at the Club which provides a great opportunity to meet many of your fellow Club Members. Work Continues on the updated security and access control system in the Clubhouse. Hopefully, everyone is aware that old key cards will be replaced with new cards compatible with the new readers. Existing fobs will work with the new system; however they will require syncing with the new readers to be operational. Nancy and Aaron are doing everything possible to make this transition convenient for everyone. An update will be available at our next General Membership Meeting. In the meantime, existing cards and fobs will continue to work. 2 FROM THE COMMODORE - Continued Ed Jennerich, President of the Recreational Boating Association of Washington (RBAW), has been scheduled to speak at our General Membership Meeting in June. Ed spoke at our meeting last June and his insight into matters affecting the boating community State-wide was very informative. Bring any questions you may have on legislative or regulatory matters and Ed will be glad to discuss these while he is here. Three vacant positions remain on the Executive Board ---Corresponding Secretary and two Board Members at Large. If you have interest in participating, please contact Nancy Hubbard or me for details. FROM THE REAR COMMODORE Margo Place The butterflies are coming out and the robins are busy making their nests. I know now that winter has left, and it is time for some spring time fun. As everyone gets their boat ready for the season, and enjoys the warm days on the water, keep these tips in mind. Please carry your trash from your boat to our trash bin in the parking lot. Do not use the cans by the BBQ for boat trash. The RYC does not have janitors that empty the trash or clean up after the members. Our club is run by member volunteers. So, let s all help each other by being considerate to each other by putting our trash in the correct bin and cleaning up our own mess or dishes in the club house. Following these simple tips will help keep things around the club clean and nice for everyone. This spring's Fishhook Park Cruise is here. The dates for the cruise are May 4, 5, and 6 th. The park is opening later this year due to budget cuts so our cruise is almost a month later than normal. That should mean warmer weather, lower winds, and lots of fun for all those who join in. The weekend's activities include lots of dock walking, stories (true and not-so-true) to be enjoyed by all, good food, good friends, and a good time to be had by all. Don't forget the Saturday night potluck dinner. As usual, steaks will be provided by RYC so be prepared to share your favorite dish with everyone. Come join in this annual event and have a great time. EXCUTIVE BOARD MEETING April 3, 2012 HIGHLIGHTS Suzanne Curn The City of Richland is not doing anything for the Corps Marina Appreciation Day Event this year so there is no expectation that we do anything at our facility. Our Rear Commodore has secured Henry s to cater a wonderful dinner for the official boat opening day in May. See the calendar for times. The By Laws and Standing Rules are still a work in progress. 4 Ships Sunk by Whales - Part 3, Survivors of the Whaleship Essex - Alan Hosler On November 20, 1820 the whaleship Essex started sinking after being rammed by a sperm whale (Part 2). After spending two days salvaging supplies from the Essex and rigging the three whaleboats with mast and sails the twenty sailors setout for South America. In command of the three boats were Capitan George Pollard Jr., Boatsteerer Obed Hendricks and First Mate Owen Chase. As the boats unable to sail against the trade winds the boats would need to sail south for 1000 miles before they could use the Westerlies to head west to Chile. Capitan Pollard wanted to head for the nearer Marquesas about 1200 miles away but some crew members had heard that their inhabitants had a reputation for cannibalism*. The crew knew that sailing the boats would be difficult as they were severely overloaded, had no keels and no rudder (whaleboats used steering oars for greater maneuverability). The first week of sailing the boats suffered stiff headwinds, spoiled provisions and leaking boats. Of particular insult was the attacking and damaging of Capital Pollard s boat by a killer whale. After a month at sea the three whaleboats landed on uninhabited Henderson Island which they mistook for Ducie Island. Had they landed on inhabited Pitcairn Island 100 miles to the Southwest they would have received help from the natives and survivors of the HMS Bounty. The crew found some freshwater water but little to eat so all but three crewmen decided to leave. Chile was 3000 miles distant so they headed for Easter Island which was less than 1000 miles away. They missed the island. On January 10 Second Mate Matthew Joy was the first crewman of the Essex to die. The next day Chase s boat with five men became separated from the other two boats. On his boat two men died and after the second death the men resorted to cannibalism. On February 18 the three remaining men were rescued by the whaleship Indian out of London. It had been 89 days since Chase s boat had left the Essex. The remaining two boats exhausted their food supplies in mid-january and their crews also resorted to cannibalism. The night of January 29 the boats became separated and Hendricks boat was never heard from again. Several months later a whaleboat was found washed ashore on Ducie Island but with four, not three skeletal remains. By February 6 the food had run out on Capital Pollard s boat and the men drew lots to determine who would be sacrificed for the survival of the crew, First Mate Owen Coffin came up short and was shot by Sailor Barzillai Ray and Coffin s body consumed. Five days later Ray died leaving just Capital Pollard and Sailor Charles Ramsdell. They were rescued by the Nantucket whaleship Dauphin on February 23, 95 days after the sinking of the Essex. Capitan Pollard, Chase, Ramsdell, Boatsteerer Benjamin Lawrence and Nickerson were reunited in Valparaiso where they informed officials they had three shipmates stranded on Ducie Island. The Australian merchant ship Surry was sent to rescue them. Not finding the men on Ducie Island and doubting that anyone had been there the captain speculated they might be on Henderson Island where the three men were eventually rescued. All eight of the surviving seamen returned to the sea within months of their return to Nantucket. Herman Melville later speculated that all would have survived had they followed Capitan Pollard s recommendation to head for the Marquesas. Melville heard of the Essex disaster when he served on the Nantucket whaleship Acushnet. While in that duty he obtained Chase s account of the disaster from his son. This accounting was one of Melville s inspirations for the fate of the whaleship Pequod in Moby-Dick. *This was an unfounded fear that cost the crew dearly
