1 The Harbor Crier On The Web At Volume 4, Issue 2 Dunedin Boat Club February 2011 Commodore s Corner by Dorothy Connor What a pleasure it is to be a part of such a fun-loving and caring group. January was full of festivities that brought us together to laugh, eat, boat and dance. I would like to thank the special people who helped organize and conduct activities this month that brought such joy and to the multitude of members who pitched in to help from start to finish. If you did your bit, this thank you is for YOU! For the Change of Watch, please thank Jack Mallard, Mary Jean Scholl and Mary Kolb. Thank you Carol Allen for getting the book club to a great start and thanks to George for a good beginning to a cruising year. Once again Carl Young, chef de jour, put together a spaghetti supper to raise money for our Mardi Gras float and party with beads in March. Norman Whitten held the first fishing tournament and Bernie Bird hosted the Super Bowl Party. No matter what the job, I have never had to look far for people to step up and help. Did you attend at least one event this month? The boat club also cares about its family members and their community. We can be proud of our many contributions to the community through support for Dunedin Youth Sailing, the Boat Parade, participation in community events such as the upcoming Mardi Gras parade and much more Members also reach out to members when things are not going so well, showing that the care about the membership and celebrate happy occasions. February 28 is the last day to renew membership in what has to be the best bargain for fun activities and friendship in the area. Don t let your membership expire; renew at the February meeting and get your new keys that will unlock countless possibilities for Dorothy Connor Inside This Issue Vice Commodore... 2 Tournament Winners.. 2 The Bridge & Board... 3 Social Events... 5 Sea Scouts... 6 Dues Are Due... 7 Cruising... 7 Ships Store... 8 Marketplace Upcoming Events At A Glance... 2 Vice Commodore by Happy Many thanks to our own Zeke Durica for sharing his Ensign Nationals win and trophies with us. If you weren't at the January meeting you missed a great talk and show of a special boat building! Dennis Bosi will share his DVD of Mardi Gras 2010 and get us pumped up for Mardi Gras this year. Come get some ideas for the Voo Doo that you do that is the City's theme for this year's event and see what the float building team has in store for us. Dues are due this month and the Purser will collect from those who have not already paid for Once your dues are paid you will be given a new building key. The building locks will be changed directly after the February General Membership Meeting on the 21st. Also make sure your information is correct for the directory - it will be published the end of February. Trout Tournament Winners 1st Place Liza Hopkins 2.20 lbs. 2nd Place Nelson Diaz 1.15 lbs. 3rd Place Bernie Buird.5 lbs. 4th Mark Jordan I want to thank everyone who fished. Everything went smoothly and it was another great day on the water. Norm Whitten From the Webmaster Recently I have been asked a number of questions that indicate that all of you are not really reading the web site from the Calendar to Youth sailing! Don t forget that not only has the website saved the club more than $3,000, but it is a guide for activities, the way you can RSVP for events including racing and a link to videos and photos of our events. Go look at the YMCA dance at the Change of Watch or Mary Madonna at the Flares and Karaoke Party. You can also check the weather, advertise marine gear that you want to sell and follow other useful links from our page. 2 Dunedin Boat Club PO Box 201 Dunedin, FL

It will be at Brenda Hanson s, 7pm on March 2. Please come! Here s one of the blurbs about it: Loving Frank is one of those novels that take over your life. It s mesmerizing and fascinating filled with complex characters, deep passions, tactile descriptions of astonishing architecture, and the colorful immediacy of daily life a hundred years ago-all gathered into a story that unfolds with riveting urgency. And that s not even the most enthusiastic one. Best of all it is also highly recommended by a boat club person. It s about Frank Lloyd Wright and Mamah Cheney, a married, very interesting client with whom he had a long time affair. 4 Bringing Up the Rear Rear Commodore Peter Kolb The Club House has had so many improvement in the last couple of years the willingness of active and involved members who care is really evident. The pilings under the floor have been shored up; we have new windows and a new drinking fountain; a new lock, new heaters, fans & lights, and much more what a group of willing sailors. Now with all that is new the club house maintenance manual also needs updating. If we have any willing members with technical writing skills who are willing to take on our maintenance manual it would be a great benefit to the future of our club. Tidy Up! Do you know the nautical origin of this common phrase? It comes from to be in tide, meaning to be timely, to do things in their proper time or season, to insure they are done in a timely manner, as in the regular way the tide comes in and goes out. A timely event - The Super Bowl Party was super Berine and Robin set up a better show than the half time. And as always, everyone who was there at the end stayed to clean up and put away. What a great club!!! I was the one who let the guests down, we were out of paper towels in the restrooms. Please help me make this another great year. If you see something which needs repair or resupplied let me know. It s just like we do at home, if we take the last roll out of the cupboard, we write it on the list. Paper good, cleaning supplies, cups, plates, or plastic ware let me know and I will see that the shelves are stocked. Call or peterlkolb@tampabay.rr.com. Thanks for your help. Blessings and smooth sailing, In the Rear, Peter Kolb 4 Dunedin Boat Club PO Box 201 Dunedin, FL

5 Mardi Gras Party Don't forget Mardi Gras parade March 8th. The overall main theme for the parade is "Who Do Dah Voodoo". We will be using the Disney story "Little Toot" with Popeye and Olive oil as the float riders. Bill Wilfert has volunteered to be Popeye. We are seeking and Olive Oil. The dress for the parade will be anything nautical or VooDoo nautical.this will be centered around Carl Young's little tug boat that he is generically donating to the cause. The theme is loosely based on the Disney story "Little Toot". We have our first float building meeting next Wednesday the Feb 9th at 7:30 PM for planning. The float building party Saturday March 5th location and time to be determined. Anybody interested please attend or contact Jim Graham or Blessing of the Fleet Saturday, May 21 The Blessing of the Fleet is a tradition that began centuries ago in Mediterranean fishing communities. The practice is predominantly Catholic and a blessing from the local priest was meant to ensure a safe and bountiful season. However, there are numerous instances where the "Blessing" was initiated by an Episcopalian minister. Although the event is not until May I would like to get suggestions for a priest/minister and enlist volunteers for setup, help with food prep, clean up, etc. If your boat is moored at another marina and you are interested in participating, please let me know as soon as possible and I will see if arrangements can be made.
