1 The Harbor Crier On The Web At Volume 5, Issue 10 Dunedin Boat Club October 2012 Commodore s Corner by Happy A quick thank you to all that were involved in any shape or form in the Regatta Ball and/or Regatta more on that later! My mantra is it takes a village and boy did this village put on a great show for the sailing community, the City of Dunedin, the kids, and everyone in between. Thank you! Many have asked us to inquire about reinstating our Yacht Club of America membership. We have done so but it doesn t start until January 1, Many of you are starting to plan spring trips along the FLA West coast and this will be a great tool for you to see where you can go! This allows you to use member club facilities that you normally would not. The only hitch we have to track it. Please Mary where you went, the date, and how long you stayed and she will keep a running log if the membership is NOT used, it will NOT be renewed. When we get the login password, membership packet, membership cards, and book, we will let you know! The book will be stored in an accessible location in the Boat Club. The year is not over, so please step up and keep the village going! We ll need help with more parties and the Boat Parade! It s a great way to get involved and meet more folks! 3 Regatta Recap If you were not at the Regatta Ball you missed a good time! The Silent Auction was fabulous thank you Terry, Dorothy, Robin, Jennifer, and Brenda. Thank you to all who attended and supported! The first ever Live Auction was a lot of fun and bidding wars and surprises abounded! Our speaker Maureen McKinnon-Tucker, 2008 Paralympic Gold Medalist was a real treat and inspiration. If you weren t there you missed out. Here is a link to Maureen s inspiring story. and a personal letter from Maureen. Dear Kim and Deb, I wish to thank the both of you and the officers of the Dunedin Boat Club for one of the best times I have ever had in the state of Florida! Thank you for choosing me as your speaker. Thank you also for the standing ovation, that was very humbling, thank you. Everyone, from the club officers, their families, the youth sailors, their families and even the Dunedin Country Club's paid staff were all so exceptionally friendly, welcoming, accommodating and well... just so darn nice!! To the Beatys, you could not have been better hosts!! Thank you for the transport, the careful hotel selection, the fabulous dinners and meals and some rather good scotch drinks ;) As I said before, Deb and Kim are the best two person tourist bureau a town could have. I thoroughly enjoyed my two day stay and I will remember the folks from Dunedin fondly... always! Sincerely, Maureen McKinnon On a similar note, the Regatta Awards Party had a superstar show up as well Jen French, 2012 Paralympic Silver Medalist, just back from London showed up to present Sailability their awards do you see a thread here?! This is a link to a blog from Reach for the Sails talking about one of Sailability s own sailors and his experience in the Dunedin Cup Regatta and meeting Jen French. On behalf of Paul, Mary, and Happy we want to thank everyone who participated in any way, shape, or form. The Regatta Committee consisted of 11 Boat Club members. There were over 30 people at the Clean Up Day on Sept 22 to get the Boat Club and grounds ready for the crowd wow! Almost 100 people and members volunteered to help during the 2 days. There were 81 boats on the water over 2 days in 6 races. There were 11 support boats of 37 people on the water making sure the races went off without a hitch. We had Jen French, 2012 Silver Medalist show up. Tony Milo from SouthWinds wrote an article and took pictures. It s too early to tell what funds were raised to put Dunedin Youth Sailing on the water in the future but we ll keep you posted when we do! A special thank you to Paul Auman and his team for pulling it all off! Thank you, thank you, thank you to all who helped. Dunedin Boat Club PO Box 201 Dunedin, FL

5 The Book Club The next Book Club will be 7 PM on Wednesday, November 7. The book: A Land Remembered, by Patrick Smith. It was winner of the Florida Historical Society Tebeau Prize as the Most Outstanding Florida Historical Novel. As usual, we will have munchies and wine, and even if you haven t read the book, you are welcome to come. For the book set in China, there was a feast of delicious Chinese food maybe this calls for swamp cabbage? If you haven t come to Book Club before, this might be a good time to try something new. We would love to have you! Just RSVP to the DBC website. From the Amazon site: In this best-selling novel, Patrick Smith tells the story of three generations of the MacIveys, a Florida family who battle the hardships of the frontier to rise from a dirt-poor Cracker life to the wealth and standing of real estate tycoons. The story opens in 1858 when Tobias MacIvey arrives in the Florida wilderness to start a new life and ends two generations later with Solomon MacIvey, who realizes that the land has been exploited far beyond human need. The sweeping story that emerges is a rich, rugged Florida history featuring a memorable cast of crusty, indomitable Crackers battling wild animals, rustlers, Confederate deserters, mosquitoes, starvation, hurricanes, and freezes to carve a kingdom out of a swamp. But their most formidable adversary turns out to be greed, including finally their own. Love and tenderness are here too: the hopes and passions of each new generation, friendships with the persecuted blacks and Indians, and respect for the land and its wildlife. Coming too soon: December 5: The Age of Miracles, by Karen Thompson Walker. Sunshine ~Get Well Wishes to: Carl Young, who has been sick with a viral infection Clay Connor, recovering from successful cataract surgery ~Speedy Recovery to: Terry Hopkins, involved in a car accident Gary Badders, also involved in a car accident ~Special Thoughts to: Tim Hunt, whose father is hospitalized with an aneurysm Dunedin Boat Club PO Box 201 Dunedin, FL

9 Vice Commodore by Peter Tis the season to be jolly. The decorations are in the stores and the plans are being discussed. The Christmas light pole and parade will be getting started with their designs and committees. Our Bridge and Board have chosen two ways we are invited to assist in making Christmas merry for those who could use a helping hand. We will be invited to be Santa for some Dunedin families to assist in their merry Christmas. Information will be published and we will have the opportunity to provide gifts for some of our community s children and parents. We will be asked to purchase food and household necessities for the Food Pantry in Palm Harbor F.E.A.S.T. Last year we gave our assistance to the local Pantry south of Dunedin. This year we plan to look north. Food Pantries supplies are at record lows. Families hurt by our current economy are in danger of loosing the support they depend on. Please, as we make our Holy Day plans, let s plan to play Santa for some of our neighborhood s families, parents, children, and seniors. We will have plenty of fun and fellowship. Let s also plan to make the season grand for some of our neighbors. Dunedin Boat Club PO Box 201 Dunedin, FL

10 If you were to ask your children, What is something you have always dreamed of? Would you shrug off their answer? Would you tell them to write it down and put it in a drawer, possibly pulling it out 20, 30, 40 years from now? Would you tell them to always hold that dream close to their heart, and always wonder, What if? I doubt it. A few days ago, I asked my Facebook friends what they had always dreamed about. The responses moved me, they inspired me and they made me laugh. Some of them reminded me of my own dreams that I still hold onto, some I found satisfaction in having already fulfilled and others inspired me to dream more. A while back I decided I would start chasing the Dream Chasers. It stared with traveling, I got the bug and couldn t let it go. Wanderlust was always a part of me. Now, it was festering inside of me. My personal life was going through a major transition and I needed inspiration. I took it anywhere I could find it. I spent hours reading the blogs of those who were living their dreams, dreams that were similar to mine. I read their stories, I followed their adventures and absorbed every single photograph as if I were there. Those people changed me forever. They inspired me, opened me up to a world I never knew existed, they gave me new dreams. I looked at my kids and I knew, I had to become a Dream Chaser. Dreams are an evolution. It s important that we allow ourselves to grow with them. If you wanted to be a pilot when you were young, and you ve held onto that your entire life, don t give up on flying. Allow the dream to evolve. Allow yourself to work it into your life. What if your child asked you, Mommy/Daddy, what have you always dreamed about? Then they asked you, What are you going to do to make it happen? Would that be enough to do something about it? Would you make excuses then tuck it back into that drawer? What if What if you used it as a teaching moment and you did something about it? Continued on next page 10 Dunedin Boat Club PO Box 201 Dunedin, FL

11 Reach For The Sails Continued So here we go. You are hereby invited to join the Dream Chasers. Your first assignment is to write your dream down, then say it out loud. Whether it be on Facebook or to your family or a friend, just say it out loud. The next step is to get on your computer and start figuring out how you will make it happen! Every day, make it a goal to do at least one thing that brings you closer to that dream. You just might be surprised where it takes you! One of the BIGGEST things you have to remember NEVER allow anyone else to tell you it s not possible! One of the best pieces of advice I ever got Keep swimming! Don t tread water, don t float Just keep swimming! These days, no goal is too big for me. I m here to live, to show my kids what living your life is all about, regardless of the obstacles. To live my dreams and to help my kids live theirs. I created this program to show my kids that they can do anything they set out to do! If my son wants to be an Olympic sailor, then I will lead the way and show him that goal is within his reach. DBC Communications When you receive a blast from Dunedin Boat Club, please do not hit 'reply' to speak to the person. Instead the person who's written the blast so that it goes directly to them and they can answer your question, receive your RSVP etc. If you hit 'reply' it just goes to a black hole!!!
