March Program will be Bob Ironsmith with the City of Dunedin, Community Redevelopment Agency to review the process of redevelopment and the goals of the city s program. Future plans for the Marina area are posted on the city website for us to preview before the meeting. From this beginning, the story of Edgar Watson is told through the recollections of his daughter and neighbors, and other historical papers. This is a study rich in history, social studies, ecology, and nature of the The Ten Thousand Islands area of southwestern Florida from Why was he shot, and what was he really like? 7 Cruising George Schott The February cruise had a great turn out. We had 6 boats there and the Bosi s did a fabulous job of hosting the event. Due to unusually high winds on the departure day, those that did not want to venture out were offered a second free night. Our next cruise is less than two weeks away, March 16, 17 & 18. It is combined with the racers distance race down to Pass-A-Grill and will be to the Gulfport Municipal marina. They have free Wi-Fi for the internet geeks. Those of you that are not racing down can join Peggy and me Friday for a doc party and spend the day Saturday, scoping out the town and making dinner reservations for the group Saturday night. See you all there, REMINDER TO ALL DBC MEMBERS Events outside of scheduled club events can only be limited to a small gathering of no more than 8 people including the member, invited guests, and family and can not have exclusive use of the clubhouse. 8 Sailibility Sailibility would like to make boating accessible and available to those with special needs out of the Dunedin marina. The Sailibility board has given us their full backing and support. During my nine years with Sailibility I have met many people with various disabilities who, before their accident or illness, were boaters. They are now confined to a wheelchair, unable to enjoy time on the water, something many take for granted. At the Clearwater Sailing Center we've been able to facilitate these mariners as well as those who hadn't spent much time off land. The positive effect it has on their lives is immeasurable. We now plan to bring disabled boating to Dunedin. We have a fully accessible 24' pontoon boat that we've been using to take people in wheelchairs out. They go out for either a boat ride or for some light fishing. Sailibility has a fully trained, experienced staff ready to make it happen. Here's where DBC fits in. We want the trip out of Dunedin Marina to be hosted by DBC members. This would entail using contacts within the Club to reach out to the Dunedin community and make the arrangements to have the disabled boaters come to the dock on a scheduled day and time. There will be no charge for the events. This would begin to give DBC an accreditation as being an ADA (American Disabilities Act) club. There are more positive aspects to this project than can be mentioned here, but overall this synopsis covers all of the important points. I would like all DBC members who are interested in being involved to contact me at d113249@ yahoo.com. Thank you for your support of our highly valued Sailibility boaters. Dennis Denninger Fishing Report Catching snook and tarpon is just around the corner. Late spring snook are starting to show up and are ready for spawning. The deeper holes and passes are the best places to start catching these fish. You should use live pinfish or grass grunts since they are the preferred bait. Also, slow trolling a small live mullet or spoon works well in the channels and passes. Later in the season snook will be in the swath by the channel next to the beaches. Tarpon will show up this month sooner than most think do to the water warming faster this year. Hurricane Pass and 3-Rooker Pass are great spots to sight fish these silver kings. Tarpon will travel the beaches from the North and cut across the sand bars in small pods making it easy to see them coming. The use of live pinfish or dead mullet will make great bait. THANKS Capt. Alex 8 Dunedin Boat Club PO Box 201 Dunedin, FL

9 ` Mardi Gras Report March 5, 2012 I want to thank all those who participated in the making of the float and the parade. We had a great time. Thank s to John and Susan Lowe for hosting the before party. Good food good drinks good time. Everybody looked great in their dress. I believe that Blair had the biggest balls. We had over 55 people walk in the parade. I want to issue a special thanks to Tony Sacco and Ken Blaine as well as the Party Marty and the windlasses for decommissioning our lady. Also to Dennis Bosi for allowing the use of Bob Lee s Garage to build the float as well as all 26 people who helped with the design, construction and decoration of the float. It was awesome! We won again. Aren t we a great group!!! Dunedin Boat Club PO Box 201 Dunedin, FL

10 Social Committee Mary Kolb & Cheryl Young Blessing of the Fleet The Blessing of the Fleet is a tradition that began centuries ago in Mediterranean fishing communities. It announced the opening of the seafood season for the local watermen. A blessing from the priest was meant to ensure a safe and bountiful catch and was held annually at the beginning of the harvest season. During the blessing, a member of the Clergy blesses the vessels with a prayer. Also, a wreath is cast into the water in memory of the fishermen who died during the previous year. This Sunday the Dunedin Boat Club will carry on that tradition for 23 boats in the Dunedin Marina. The event will begin on A Dock and work our way around. Pastor Becky from Church of the Good Shepherd will be conducting the Boat Blessing. Our host for this event is MaryEllen Farinas, who has been working diligently to make all the preparations. We will include the Pram Shed and the DYSA sailors also. Upon completion we will cast a wreath from the floating dock and remember our members who have gone before. There is still time to get your boat on the list by contacting Mary Kolb. The other social event for March will be our St. Patrick s Celebration. This will be prior to the DBC monthly meeting on March 19th at 6 PM. Our Sea Scouts will be serving up Bernie Buird s Corned Beef n Cabbage. We have 84 folks already signed up. If you want to join us and have not sent in your RSVP to Mary Kolb, do it now and get your name on the list by clicking here: mkolb@gotravelorlando.com The cost is $8 at the door and we need you to bring a dessert, salad or appetizer to complete our Irish Feast! The DBC will be serving up the beer and wine. This is a Fund Raiser Event for our Sea Scouts. Mark your calendar for the Dock Party on April 28 with Allan & Barbara Powell stepping up to the plate to Host this event. The Cinco de Maya Party is planned for May 12 with the Nigros, Barnettes and Kynes as Hosts on May 12, go dig out your sombreros! Then in no time at all it will be Island Party June 9 with Dave and company. If you have any ideas for a party let us know will see if we can make it happen! 11 Three Rooker Bar Birds The Nesting Birds of Three Rooker Bar Need Your Help The Gulf Islands State Parks, like Three Rooker, are a Globally Important Bird Area (not just state or national) based on rigorous scientific criteria about bird populations, not just some bird lover s whim or fancy. A significant number of the entire world s population of the tiny, federally endangered Piping Plover use these islands especially Three Rooker Bar. More than 5,000 pairs of nesting seabirds and shorebirds nest on the island, including several state-threatened species. Last year Clearwater Audubon Society started a bird steward program during the nesting and chick-fledging season on Three Rooker Bar. Volunteers set up stations adjacent to the nesting areas with equipment including binoculars, spotting scopes, bird identification guides, and literature. The volunteers educate the people on the beach about respecting the space needed by nesting birds. Beach goers are shown the birds and their tiny, flightless chicks with the telescope. Volunteers attempt to make sure there is no intrusion into the colonies by people or dogs. Our goal is to have volunteers on the islands Saturdays and Sundays from 10AM till 4PM. Last year the program was challenged by lack of boats for transportation of bird steward volunteers to the island. This year the Park will provide boat transportation 2 weekend days a month. This leaves 6-8 days to fill, weekends and holidays from May 1 st to July 15 th. 4 8 volunteers need transport, depending on boat capacity. The Park requires that the boat remain in close proximity so volunteers may be quickly evacuated in case of inclement weather or medical emergency. Clearwater Audubon is seeking boaters of the Dunedin Boat Club to help provide transportation for this worthy project. Also volunteers to work in the bird stewarding program. Thanks for your consideration. For more information contact John Hood jhood2@tampabay.r.com home, cell). Dunedin Boat Club PO Box 201 Dunedin, FL
