1 Happy Holidays The Harbor Crier On The Web At Volume 3, Issue 12 Dunedin Boat Club December 2010 Commodore s Corner by Captain Ron Kinkead What a great year this has been. We have accomplished so much and had fun doing it. What more could you ask for. I had thought about telling you, in detail, what we did this past year, but you allready know all of this because you were a part of it. So instead this is the time of the year to remember our friends and family and to keep them in our hearts, minds and prayers. As we go through this holiday season I want to say to each and every one of you may you have a very Merry Christmas and a prosperious New Year. 2 Vice Commodore by Dorothy Connor Looking Backwards While Looking Ahead A special thanks goes to Amanda Fleming who prepared the presentation for the November meeting which looked at the Dunedin Cup Regatta, held by our DBC and Kiwanis to support Dunedin Youth Sailing. Amanda combined her own photos with those of Sam McVicker to give a visual summary of the events. Kim Beatty gave a summary of the events and announced that more than $11,000 was raised to help this program that is beginning it s third year. This time of year we are busy counting the many things for which we are thankful at Thanksgiving, are preparing to celebrate the holidays of Christmas and Hanukkah with friends and family and are looking forward to the new year. As we count our blessing, we need to remember that for many this year has been difficult financially and the new year hopes are accompanied by anxities. While the Boat Club has donated to many community organizations as a group, there are many opportunities for individuals. One such opportunity is to donate useful but surplus furniture to a family in need in our community. On that wish list are 2 sofas, 2 bureaus, lamps and 2 student desks. If you are replacing items or have spares, Tracie Gattas is coordinating this project. She may be reached at The Sea Scouts, sponsored by the DBC, are a remarkable coed group of youth who made a presentation to the board requesting opportunities to help them raise money. They have two boats in the marina that they maintain and sail. They compete in regattas, do cruising in the summer and are a valuable part of our efforts to make sailing and sailing instruction accessible to youth regardless of economic status. They are willing and able to help you spiff up your boat. Give a call to Billy McElligot at if you would like to help these young people out by purchasing a boat wash. With bird season upon us, it is a nice way to kill two birds at once! Continued on page 11 2 Dunedin Boat Club PO Box 201 Dunedin, FL

Please verify that all your names, addresses, phone numbers, and addresses are correct. That will help us provide you with all Club information and insure that the 2011 Dunedin Boat Club Roster is accurate. Checks can be mailed to: Dunedin Boat Club P.O. Box 201 Dunedin, FL Thanks in advance for you support of the Club for another year. Jack Mallard Purser From the Webmaster As the year ends with celebration, I would like give a big THANK YOU to all of the committee chairmen who have done such a wonderful job of maintaining their web pages within our site to keep all members posted as to what we are doing, have done and are planning to do. The fact that almost 20,000 visits to the website confirms that is has been an asset for the club Many visits are to print or read the monthly newsletter, edited by Captain Ron; think of all of the money we have saved through electronics rather than snail mail. The savings are more than $3,000 per year! Captain Clay Dunedin Boat Club PO Box 201 Dunedin, FL
8 Cruising George Schott The November cruise was our annual Thanksgiving weekend trip to Caladesi Island. Ron Kinkead & Dave Becker managed the grills Friday and Saturday nights and everyone brought dishes and drinks to share. We even had full length feature films for evening entertainment. Friday night it was the comedy Captain Ron no pun intended. Saturday evening it was a cartoon version of A Christmas Carol. The weather was reasonably nice and a good time was had by all. We had 15 boats in attendance. With good weather and great publicity the Dunedin Holiday Boat Parade on December 4 was a raving success. The festivities started at 3 PM where Marker 1 Marina sponsored a Pre Parade dock party, providing all the grilled hamburgers, hot dogs and soft drinks you wanted. There was live music with our very own Jennifer Valley singing solo. 25 boats registered were registered and all started the parade. We got the parade started at 6 PM with the first boats arriving at Dunedin Marina about 7:30. The last boat, the Pinellas County Sheriff s boat, gave Santa a wild ride as it made an exciting entrance into the harbor about 8:20 PM. The following are the award recipients for this year s parade: The Best Decorated boat in the marina: Friend Ship built and skippered by Carl Young. The Best Lit boat in the marina: Intermission owned by Sarah Erb. Power boats 30 feet and longer Commodore s Award - Island Rider, captained by Darby Serra Harbor Master s Award - Dunwurkin, captained by Frank Brokamp Power Boats less than 30 feet Commodore s Award - Dam Bote, captained by Larry Wilbur Harbor Master s Award - Kings Boat, captained by Steven King Sail Boats 30 feet and longer: Commodore s Award - BLEW-BY-U, captained by Kim Beaty Harbor Master s Award - INTOBA, captained by Paul McCoy Sail Boats less than 30 feet Commodore s Award - Hearts Content, captained by Jim Schrader Harbor Master s Award - Dot-Gain, captained by Ron Kinkead The cruising schedule has been set for 2011 and will be posted on the Cruising page of DBC WEB site in the next couple of days Shortly after New Year s I will schedule a meeting separate from the regular meetings to focus on where everyone wants to go each month. 9 Night Before Christmas in Key West Twas the night before Christmas, and all through Key West, Not a creature was stirring, not even the houseguest. No stockings were hung by chimneys this time, No need for a chimney in the Southernmost clime. Tourists were nestled all snug in their beds, While tunes from the Conch Train danced in their heads. Mama in her Kino's and I in bare feet, Settled down with mojitos for a sweet Christmas treat. When out in the harbor there arose such a clatter, I sprang from my hammock to see what was the matter! Out to the porch I stumbled through clutter, Cranked open the jalousie and threw up the shutter. The moon through the palm trees beamed galore, And gave a luster of midday to the cruise boats offshore. When what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a miniature sleigh with eight tiny Key deer. With a little old driver, so quick to honk, I new in a moment it must be St. Conch. More rapid than powerboats, his Key deer flew, And he whistled, and shouted, and called to them, too. Now, Mira! Now Lewis! Now Bethel and Curry! On Wardlow! On McCoy, On Spotswood... HURRY! >From the end of North Roosevelt, to the foot of Duval, Now, dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!" Like banana leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with a sunset, there up in the sky. Up to my widow's walk the Key deer they flew, With a sleigh full of mangoes, and ole St. Conch too. And then in a twinkling, I heard on the roof, The disco-like beat of each tiny hoof. As I drew in my head and was turning around, Down the gumbo limbo, the ole conch came with a bound. On his shoulder he carried an iguana with warts; Wore a souvenir T-shirt and little red shorts. He wore flip-flops and sported a palm frond chapeau, Carried a Pina Colada with an umbrella to go. He was puffing away on a Cuban cigar, Blowing rings toward Havana, over the bar. Even though his get-up made me think, "Yikes!" His snowy white beard said "Hemingway Look- Alikes". A bundle of coconuts he held with great care, So he looked like a vendor from Mallory Square. His eyes how they twinkled! His slow Southern drawl, Revealed he'd been bar-hopping down on Duval. He worked fast and furious, without a flub-a, Leaving little presents, for each and every Bubba. Then laying a finger aside his sunburned nose, Giving a big nod, up the gumbo limbo he rose. He sprang to his sleigh and his Key deer they fled Right up U.S.1 toward Homestead. And I heard him exclaim as he soared past Key West Bight, Merry Christmas to all, have a happy Conch night. Dunedin Boat Club PO Box 201 Dunedin, FL
10 Social Committee Liza & Terry Hopkins / Sharon Williams Comming Events Super Bowl Party On Feb 6th there is usually a SUPER BOWL party at the clubhouse, so more details on this at the next meeting or in a Happy Blast! Mardi Gras Party Mardi Gras is in March this year, so parade building will be around the first of March and the parade (FAT TUESADY) date will be March 8th this year more details coming. This year will be BIG year for all boat club members with parties and events all year so get ready for 2011! 10 Dunedin Boat Club PO Box 201 Dunedin, FL
11 Vice Commodore by Dorothy Connor Continued from page 2 With the Boat Parade completing this year s social calendar, I have to admit that Santa Claus participation in the beautiful array of boats was tremendously exciting, especially the entry on the Sheriff s boat! I am positive that Santa saw anticipation for the future in the eyes of the many children who attended. What a post parade party Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah to you all with warm wishes, calm seas and fair winds for the New Year. The Book Club Plans for the New Year Carol Allen has graciously agreed to assume leadership for the Book Club for She invites all of you readers to join us for food, fellowship and discussion on January 5, at Carol Allen s home to discuss The Glass Castle by Jeanette Wall. At this same meeting we will be choosing books for the next few months. We always have a rather eclectic list that ranges from thrillers to biography so be sure to be there to get your preferences on the list. If you have not read Glass Castle yet, this season is a great time to do so. Through the eyes of a child who grows up through the course of the book, this autobiographical book looks at family experiences in a most non-traditional and dysfunctional family. It makes you re-think the question of nature vs nurture. While this sounds sort of boring, the book is a page turner, one that I could not put down, that both inspires and makes you laugh between the tears. Check the website for RSVP submission and mark your own calendars to be a part of this fun group. Race Chairman Plans for the New Year Paul Auman, race chairman for 2011, plans to revive a past DBC tradition of longer point to point races with a projected race from Clearwater to Pass-a- Grill. He has a full program of races for spring and fall that will keep fun races such as the Valentine s shorthanded race as well as the Commodore s Laundry race and the bigger races such as the Dunedin Cup..
