Here are some additional examples of these question words in Arabic.? I is used to begin questions such as Could you?, Do you?, Are you?, or May ه ل - ه ل ا ن ت ع ر ب ي - لا. ا نا ا م ريك ي ا د ر س الل غ ة الع ر ب ي ة. - و ه ل ا ن ت ج ن د ي - ن ع م. ا نا ج ن د ي في م شاة ال ب ح ر ي ة. there? is used to ask how, as in How are you? and How do you get ك ي ف - ك ي ف الحال - ب خ ي ر و ال ح م د الله. - ك ي ف و ص ل ت ا لى مونتيري - ب ال طاي رة. 2.20

3 Notes ا ي ن is used to ask about location, and م تى is used to ask about time. - ا ي ن ت س ك ن - ا س ك ن في ال ثك ن ة. - و م تى و ص ل ت - و ص ل ت م ن ذ ث لاث ة ا سابيع. objects. for inanimate ما is used to ask about people; use م ن - ا س ف ن سيت ا ن ا س ا ل ك...ما اس م ك - ا س مي غ س ان. - و م ن ا س تاذ ك - الا س تاذ صاد ق. - ا ذا ل ن ذ ه ب ا ل ي ه. Use ل ماذا to ask for a reason. - ل ماذا ن ذ ه ب ا ل ي ه - لا ن ه م د رس ج ديد. 2.21

5 Notes - ك م ي ب ع د م ط ع م ال ج ي ش م ن ه نا - ح وال ي نص ف ميل. - ح س نا. What does كم mean? What does كم mean? - ك م دولار ا ث م ن ال و ج ب ة - ث لاث دولارات و ر ب ع ل غ ي ر ال ع س ك ر ي ين. You will notice that كم means either how much? or how many?, based on the context. It can also be used to ask the time. Comprehension Check. Translate the questions into English. ك م طا لب ا في ال ص ف ك م ميلا ت ب ع د مونتيري ع ن سان هوزيه ك م ساع ة ت س ت غ ر ق ر ح ل ت ك ك م دولارا ت ك ل ف ة هذ ه ال و ج ب ة Note: When كم is followed by a noun, it means how many? When you form a question with,كم the noun that follows كم must have tanween when the noun is indefinite singular. For example: ك م طال ب ا في ال ص ف ك م ا س تاذ ا في الف ريق ك م ش ه ر ا في ال سن ة 2.23

6 ACTIVITY 4 a. You are in line at the car rental counter. Listen to the dialogue and write the word that follows each use of ك م in the spaces provided. Notes The Script for this activity is on page ١ ك م.٢ ك م.٣ ك م.٤ ك م b. Listen to the dialogue again and in the spaces below write the noun that you hear in each of the answers given to the questions...١..٢..٣..٤..٥ Remind your students that the answer for كم should be written in the accusative case. Example: ميلا ساعة دولارا c. Your teacher just returned from a vacation. In groups of three, write three questions below that you want to ask about this vacation:.١ ٢..٣ d. Ask your teacher the three questions you wrote in Step c. Pay attention to the questions asked by the other groups. 2.24

7 Notes ACTIVITY 5 You are traveling by Greyhound Bus to visit your family. Your seat on the bus is behind an Arab passenger who is talking on his cell phone, so you overhear only one half of the conversation. 8 ACTIVITY 6 a. While you are researching vacation packages, your Arab neighbor gives you a brochure. Read the brochure, and in groups of three, prepare a few questions to ask your travel agent. Use the question words you learned in the grammar presentation. On the map of Egypt, mark the approximate location of the places the traveler wants to visit and draw the route for the trip. e. An Arab visitor to DLI wants to know what places to see during a stay in Monterey. Give the visitor some information and answer the questions. Your teacher will play the role of the Arab visitor. Ask questions about places of interest in the Monterey area, their locations and their distance from the city. You might ask about Cannery Row, Big Sur, Point Lobos, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium, or about sports or local restaurants. 2.28
