1 January 2017 Proefke takes CYC s helm Ending a highly successful year that saw membership and revenues grow, Commodore Johnny Cardosi heralded the Change of Watch at CYC by handing the lines to the Commodore s burgee to Ed Proefke Jr. The Dec. 3 ceremony at the flagpole a beautiful, warm night was thoughtfully explained by PC Gene Fleming as each of CYC s Flag Officers raised their burgees in commemoration to the coming year. Commodore Proefke, who is the 73rd CYC Commodore since the Club s founding in 1911, passed his Vice Commodore burgee to Rear Commodore Collin Heimensen, who will now, as VC, head up the House and Grounds Committee. Heimensen s flag went to Phil Beauchamp, who as RC, will lead CYC s Entertainment Committee. Secretary Dorothy Connor handed her burgee to Mary Kay Delk, who will handle that duty for the Board of Directors in And Treasurer Deborah Wilder and Fleet Captain Curtis Wold each raised their own flags for another year of service at CYC. 2 2 Commodore s Corner Change of Watch 2016, wow! What an evening. It is an honor to serve as your Commodore for the coming year. December 3 rd was a beautiful evening for Change of Watch; we had a full house and our GM Tom, Chef John and the crew served a fabulous meal. I believe 2017 will be another good Commodore year at Clearwater Yacht Club as Ed Proefke Jr. membership is growing and we have had great participation at each month s events. By the time you read this, we will have experienced the Christmas and New Year s holiday season. I hope you all had a great time with friends and family during the holidays. We have been welcoming back our seasonal members during the past couple of months, and in January, we will welcome back those who stayed home for the holidays. One of the things on my list for the coming year is to re-establish the Long Range Planning Committee. CYC has several big-ticket items that need to be addressed, including the main roof on the clubhouse and the future repair/replacement of the marina docks. These things need much discussion and forethought and I believe it is time to begin discussions. Nancy and I look forward to seeing you all in January. Happy New Year! January Compass By Charlie Geraci, Membership Chairman As a newly elected member of the CYC Board, I would first like to thank the nominating committee and the membership at large for giving me an opportunity to serve. I am looking forward to continuing CYC s membership growth and to working closely with the Board on any and all projects to help maintain the outstanding status deserving of our club. With that said, I would like to ask the help of each member in reaching out to their families and friends to encourage them to join and become members of our family-friendly club. I would also like to encourage all members to use and take advantage of the many activities our club has to offer. I will present a new incentive program to the Board and will also discuss new member-appreciation events for the coming year. Please join the Membership committee on the first Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. to share your great ideas, make new friends and have a great time. The next meetings are Jan. 4 and Feb. 1 mark your calendars! So let s end 2016 and begin 2017 with the largest membership drive ever! 3 January Compass 3 Waterside By Curtis Wold Fleet Captain The November Waterside meeting had continued discussion and efforts on club boat maintenance, dock maintenance (replacing a few damaged pilings and adding a few in the new year, pedestal light repair, recovering the concrete pad, replacing cable on davits and checking cable TV connections), long term (3-5 year) dock replacement via the Long Term Planning Committee, draft letter to inactive slip holders, and a review of slip and shore power fees. The next Waterside meeting will take place on Wednesday, January 25th at 6 p.m. Thanks to Gerard Kane, we are looking to start a monthly sunset cruise in the winter and spring for CYC members to gather on the Gulf to watch the sunset. We will include both power and sailboats on a weekend evening (coordinated with existing events) on Friday, Saturday or Sunday planning for high tides and sunset, with the intent to have a post-sunset reception/gathering at the Tiki. Intent is to keep it simple, make it fun, and exercise boats in the CYC Marina (and build some skills around dusk/ night boating). We will send out more information as details are resolved. Nautical Trivia of the Month: a ship s boy in a warship whose duty when the crew was piped to quarters for battle was to carry powder from the magazine to the gun decks. What was this ship boy called during the days of sailing navies? I ll owe a drink to the fourth person who texts or s me the correct answer. The answer to last month s nautical trivia question, a dilution of rum with water is called what: Grog. I got a few correct answers, but did not get to a fifth correct answer, so I got off cheap again last month; hopefully I ll owe someone a beverage in January! As usual, I can be reached at cwold@tampabay.rr.com or on my cell phone by text or voice at Yachting By Tim Walsh Yachting Chairman HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! And CONGRATU- LATIONS to Fr. Bob Wagenseil and his crew of intrepid sailors for successfully hosting the 2 nd Annual Ted Irwin Memorial Youth Sail-a-thon. This regatta was held on December 3 rd and continues to be an exciting addition to the Youth Sailing lineup. BLOCK OUT YOUR CALENDAR for the end of February because our next regatta will be the Laser Mid- Winters East which will run from February 22 nd thru the 26 th! We will need all hands on-deck for this race. We anticipate needing about 70 volunteers to make this regatta successful; 20 people for landside and 50 for waterside. This is a FABULOUS way for you to get to know your fellow Club members. So, please make plans to be a part of this THRILLING event and contact Dave Yoder for details. Warm up from our cold Florida winter with a bowl of soup, an appetizer and a glass of wine. Be sure to show up for one of our most popular, fun-filled parties. The Bow Chasers made a great showing at the Pass-a-Grille Interclub Regatta. Cathy McNally finished first and Joy Sheets came in third. We are also tied for the FWSA Spirit Award, which is given to the club that attends the most interclub races. Way to go, sailors! Bow Chaser Wins Prestigious Award Congratulations to Judy Umeck! Judy was the winner of the 25th annual Marie Shepard McManhon Fellowship Award. The judges chose Judy because of her service to the club and her warm and welcoming demeanor. Among her many club volunteer activities, Judy organizes the annual SNIPES dinner, plans amazing parties and events for the Bow Chasers, teaches water aerobics and is a tireless volunteer for youth sailing. Fun Times December was a month of fun. We started with the Sailor s Luncheon and had a great time decorating the Bow Chasers Christmas tree. Our annual Holiday Party was a great success. Thank you so much to Ann and Rick Burkel for hosting us in their beautiful home Continued on page 8

January Compass By Tommy Meyer, Cruising Chairman The Cruisers Christmas party was held on December 14 th and was a huge success. Not only did we recognize the people who hosted every cruise with a gift, there was a Yankee gift swap that was nothing short of hilarious. Not sure who ended up with the Potty Putter! The house was packed and we danced to the music of Tony Thomas until the wee hours of the night. Needless to say, all of the Cruisers had a wonderful time. As our Cruiser group continues to grow, so do the signups for our upcoming cruises. Our first cruise of the New Year will be Jan. 6-8 to Marker One marina in Dunedin, and we have 13 boats signed up so far. For future cruises we recommend you sign up early to ensure you get a spot. 10 10 January Compass Gulls Tracks By Lynne Shackelford, Gulls President Did you see the White Elephants running around the main dining room at the December Ladies luncheon? Many were even seen going home in cars with our members. In addition to a fun White Elephant exchange, the ladies enjoyed a great salad and holiday spirit at the last luncheon of the year. As the Gulls are preparing for our 40 th Anniversary year, many changes are in the works. There will be no Ladies Luncheon in January or February, but March will be a great 40 th Anniversary Event. Watch for more detailed information in future articles. Without doubt the most fun event we sponsor every year is Breakfast with Santa. This year was no exception. The weather was great and all the children were on the dock to meet Santa when his boat arrived. Santa greeted the children with gifts of candy before they went upstairs where he and his elf gave all the good children presents. A wonderful breakfast buffet was highlighted by special Christmas pancakes made by our own pancake man, Bob Freiberg. Both children and adults were entertained by the wonderful creations of the balloon man, the reading of the Night Before Christmas and of course the great singing of Christmas songs (especially Jingle Bells!!). Santa s workshop was in full swing again this year with Christmas wreaths for the children to decorate. Thank you to all who made this a spectacular event. Keep your eyes open for Gulls flying around the Nest every Wednesday. Please feel free to come join us. Breakfast with Santa

11 January Compass 11 By Collin Heimensen, Vice Commodore December was a great month at the Club! After the Change of Watch the first weekend in December, I found myself responsible for the House and Grounds Committee. So, for the first order of business, we hosted a thank you holiday get together for the Entertainment Committee and the House and Grounds Committee (My kind of meeting!). A Great time was had by all, the kitchen served up delicious appetizers and the bar provided great drinks. Commodore Ed Proefke and the House and Grounds Committee completed the repairs to the back wall in the kitchen and everything is working and back up to full capacity. Special thanks to Ed for overseeing the project, and most importantly getting it completed before the Change of Watch. As we look forward to 2017, we are organizing a list of proposed projects to improve the Club. We would love your input on ideas to improve the facility and the operations. The committee will be meeting on January 3 rd at 6:30 in the board room. Please join us for a short (I promise) meeting and then stay for dinner! See you at the Club!

12 12 Sailing Activities By Fr. Saturday, December 3rd brought 28 young sailors, ages 8-16, to Indian Rocks Beach for a four hour sailing marathon in support of the Beach Community Food Pantry at Calvary Episcopal Church. The young sailors represented Indian Rocks Family Sailing Association, Clearwater Yacht Club, and Dunedin Youth Sailing. Wind conditions that day featured gusts in excess of 20 knots but the results of their efforts were even greater with more than $5, in sponsorship donations collected and presented to the Food Pantry. All funds raised will bring much needed food to hungry families in Pinellas County. For the young sailors, this event is their way of giving back to the community and paying it forward in service to their neighbors. The event was similar to a Walkathon in that each participant secured sponsors whose financial support enabled them to raise the much-needed funds to support the Beach Community Food Pantry. The event is organized and run by the Indian Rocks Family Sailing Association with support from Pinellas Suncoast Fire and Rescue, the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, and Youth Sailors at Start of Sailathon CYC member Pat Dowling wouldn t let a little thing like a broken ankle keep her from organizing CYC s annual Toys For Tots campaign. 15 January Compass 15 General Manager s Letter By Tom Brusini, General Manager HAPPY NEW YEAR! I hope this letter finds you happy and healthy as we move forward to 2017! To all our members: thank you for a great 2016! Your support of our dining operation whether upstairs in the Grille or Dining Room, or downstairs at the Tiki Hut or inside the Dry Dock helped make the year. Many of you supported us by hosting your private parties here, from receptions to birthdays to graduations, and most everything in between. All of our Club functions, from formal to casual, were very well attended also. Believe me, it makes a huge difference to the Club when the restaurant operation stays busy keeping the place busy at all times sure helps us keep a good staff, from the servers & bartenders to the galley crew you might rarely see! As to private parties, we already have many booked for 2017, so if there s a date you need available, best to call now and see if it s open. Look ahead to the birthdays and/ or milestone dates of the ones you care about, and plan on partying here. Ask any member that s hosted a private party here before, and they ll tell you what fun we have! Here comes January; get out your highlighters and mark your calendars now: Wednesday, 11 th Saturday, 21 st Sunday, 29 th Jazz Night! Motown Night! Chili Cook-off! As many of you know, I m having my hip replaced the 2 nd week of this month. I ll be back to work soon enough, and in my absence you ll have Virginia and my senior team covering for me while I m out. I ll be working from my house as well, and my team knows they can give out my cell phone number should anyone need to contact me. I ll do my best to be back for Motown night! At your service, I remain, Tom By Phil Beauchamp, Rear Commodore As we say a grand goodbye to a fantastic 2016, I am excited to move into this position as your Rear Commodore. I applaud PC Cardosi for a wonderful three-year term as Commodore. He, with the steady hand of his talented wife Phyllis, certainly made CYC a main focus for many of us the last three years. I thank them both for their service. A heartfelt welcome to 2017 and fellow CYC members. January starts a New Year with lots of opportunities for our Entertainment Committee to plan exciting new venues. The Entertainment Committee is open to all CYC members and I want to personally invite you to join us on the first Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. Please become a member of the Committee, get involved, meet new friends, and bring us your terrific new ideas. December welcomed a small amount of cold weather to get us in the holiday spirit for the annual Island Estates Memorial Boat Parade. Several CYC members participated and even won a couple of the categories. Chef John had a terrific buffet for the evening and we had a packed house to watch the wonderful parade of lights. January brings new beginnings and few favorites back to the Club. We will have TOO CLOSE playing on Wednesday, January 11 th for Jazz Night from 7:30-9:30 p.m. January 21 st will be a MOTOWN dinner dance -- you won t want to miss this one! We have several reservations already, so be sure to get yours in too. Let s all get our best chili recipe for the annual CHILI COOK- OFF on Sunday, January 29 th. We set up at 1 p.m. and start the tasting at 2 p.m. on the Tiki Deck and Dry Dock. Also, don t forget about the NFL Playoff Games all month and SUPER BOWL Sunday February 5 th. Finally, we welcome back GENESIS for the 3 rd Friday nights entertainment. With so many new members having joined our great club in the past year, the Entertainment Committee is a great way to get involved and meet other members. As Carol and I take on the entertainment for the Club, we look forward to your support and great fun. See you at the club!
