1 October 2017 Irma schmirma! CYC parties on! While everyone got quite the dazing during Hurricane Irma s unwelcome visit in September, and while the Club was sort of lonely for a few days due to beach evacuations and power outages, CYC s staff and members showed true moxie. Within the week the joint was jumping again and repairs were being made to the outer pilings on Dock B and the Tiki Bar awning. All in all, a great big PHEW for us! See page 6 for more Hurricane Irma photos See page 4 for more Havana Nights Party photos

2 2 Commodore s Corner So, what about Hurricane Irma veering east like Charlie did in 2004? The Washington Post wrote what many locals believe, that the Tocobagan Indians blessed our area long ago to protect ancient burial grounds. Tocobagan Indian mounds have been found between Safety Harbor, their ancestral home, and Commodore the Gandy area. The Tocobagans Ed Proefke Jr. died out from disease and violence from Spanish conquerors in the 1500s, and it s not clear why the mounds were built, though some were for burials. It s also not clear that the mounds were blessed for protection against hurricanes, but the story has become legend. I think I m becoming a believer. In my 62 years in Dunedin and Clearwater, we have had hurricanes flirt with us, but it seems we are spared the worst of the storms. Why? Geographically we may be in a sweet spot that protects us. That theory actually seems more plausible to me. Regardless, I am happy that we were spared the worst-case scenario of the storm coming up the gulf coast on our west side. We did have some damage in the marina and some of our member s boats sustained various levels of damage. The clubhouse received minor damage and lost power for most of the week. CYC recovered quickly. Tom put together an impromptu Post Hurricane party on Sept. 21st with a large crowd of members finally able to get out of the house. The Havana Night party was rescheduled to September 23rd and was fantastically entertaining and received rave reviews from all who attended. Our seasonal members are beginning to return from the north and we are set for a great season at CYC. Make your reservations for dinner and come enjoy the club. As always, Nancy and I look forward to seeing you at our Sweet Spot Clearwater Yacht Club. CYC Board Highlights Actions taken at the September 21 meeting of the CYC Board of Directors include: l The Board approved adding 6 new members l The lower-level project (Dry Dock) will begin in October and last about six weeks. The next Board of Director s meeting will be held Thursday, October 19. October Compass CYC New Members At the September 21 Board of Directors meeting, the following memberships were approved: Lowell & Marileta Bloodworth Tony Cambria & Virginia Clancey Steve Gresham & Tracy Watson Peter & Carol Losi Michaela Mahoney Darrell & Marilyn Smith Rejoining: Jim & Nancy Bradbury If you see the pineapple flag on a table, please introduce yourself and give them a warm CYC welcome! By Charlie Geraci, Membership Chairman WELCOME NEW MEMBERS! I am happy to report that CYC membership continues to increase each and every month! It is very rewarding to watch these new members take part in so many Club activities and mixing in with seasoned members. The Membership Committee unanimously voted to increase the dues for Seasonal Members to $145 per month to be on par with the Social Members. With that said, October is here and CYC members and staff welcome back all the snowbirds Officers, Directors, Appointments & Trustees CYC Officers Ed Proefke Jr. Commodore Collin Heimensen Vice Commodore Phil Beauchamp Rear Commodore Deborah Wilder Treasurer Curtis Wold Fleet Captain Mary Kay Delk Secretary Johnny Cardosi Immediate Past Commodore Board of Directors Jim Coats Charles Geraci Gerard Kane Board of Trustees P/C David Billing P/C Dick Boblenz James Eaton Appointments Fr. 3 October Compass 3 Waterside By Curtis Wold Fleet Captain DOCK MAINTENANCE continued in the CYC Marina. We discussed repairs to Picasso and the boat trailer; Bowchasers request for repairs/upgrades to prams and Sunfish, and routine dock maintenance. Waterside and Long Term Planning Committee are looking toward future marina replacement. The next Waterside meeting will take place on Wednesday, October 25 th at 6 p.m. We are now 2/3 through hurricane season (1 June 30 November) and we certainly got some activity from Hurricane Irma. At the time of the Compass deadline, we had calls to Ress Marine to come out and assess our broken pilings and other dock damage for repairs as soon as feasible. One lesson re-learned is that when slip holders prepare boats for storms, ensure you double lines to pilings as cleats can fail or pull up dock boards in surge or high winds. Keep your guard up and be ready to prepare your boat for a couple more months; check lines, anchors and emergency equipment, and update your insurance, hurricane plan and boat buddy arrangements. CYC Sunset Cruises continue, with a few recent weather cancellations. The next one will be on Sunday, October 15th. Skippers of both power and sailboats will get underway from the CYC marina about 6:00 p.m., approximately an hour before sunset at 7:01 p.m., with a post-sunset informal no-host gathering at the Tiki. We will send out more information soon; skippers please let Gerard at gkane63@gmail. com and me (info below) know if you plan to cruise or if you want more information. Nautical Trivia of the Month The answer to last month s trivia contest was Dunkirk, the site of the evacuation of stranded troops by the little ships from England in a display of the Dunkirk spirit. The winner was once again Anita Cafferty, so I owe her yet another drink at the Tiki when she returns from up north! For this month, what was the name of Ernest Hemingway s boat? Text or the correct answer to me; the fourth correct answer will get a drink on my account at the Tiki. I can be reached at woldca@gmail.com or on my cell phone by text or voice at Yachting By Tim Walsh Yachting Chairman In October, we have CLEARING SKIES, COOLER BREEZES AND THE EXCITEMENT OF RACING in the air! This is the best time of year to be out on the open water hoisting sails to a fresh breeze. We have so many opportunities: day sails, overnight sails, participating in race committee activities, cruising with the Cruisers and participating in races. I hope that if you look for MY GIRL in her slip, SHE S NOT THERE! That will mean that we are both enjoying another FABULOUS day on the water!! This month the CYC will host the second race of the Gulf Boat of the Year (BOTY) series, the Clearwater Challenge. This race will be an overnight race which will start on Saturday, October 21 st and end on Sunday, October 22 nd. The course will start at Clearwater and go north to Anclote Key, then south to Egmont Key. From there, the course turns north to John s Pass and the finish will be back at Clearwater. Anyone thinking of entering the Habana Cup race hosted by the St. Pete Yacht Club in February 2017 should seriously think about doing this regatta to prepare. Here is the schedule for the remainder of the Summer series: Saturday Oct 14 1:30 p.m. Sunday Oct 29 2:30 p.m. Contact Tish Wold for further details. We would like to see everyone enjoying the SUN and FUN that this area has to offer. Sail and Power Boaters come out and BE a part of the EXCITEMENT!! This is a FABULOUS way to make new acquaintances at the Club.

5 Sailing Activities October Compass 5 By Fr. Bob Wagenseil, Fleet Chaplain Irma: yikes! Mother Nature has left us with a renewed sense of our own fragility and our dependence upon one another for support, encouragement and inspiration. More than a week after Irma came our way, power had still not been fully restored to parts of Florida, and our brothers and sisters in the Islands were facing yet another tragedy in the form of Hurricane Maria following terrible devastation and loss of life from Irma. We have much to be thankful for in our area, even though Irma caused us to err on the side of caution and lay aside our long-standing plans to welcome Tania Aebi and to begin our Fall Intrepid Sailing programs. Tania will now speak at CYC on Oct. 4th at 7 p.m. Ned Covel, the new Program Director for Indian Rocks Family Sailing, and his team of Intrepid volunteers worked with CYC staff to secure boats and gear, and as of this writing they are still at work preparing for Fall sailing. Ned is doing an outstanding job and looks forward Sailing legend Tania Aebi rescheduled to speak at CYC Wednesday, Oct. 4, 7 p.m. to fair winds and better weather conditions in the weeks that lie ahead. I know that our outstanding manager, Tom Brusini, and all the staff at CYC have put in long hours, with the help of so many CYC members, to usher in a return to business as usual. Thanks to the many first responders and linemen who have come from far and near, Florida will look forward to better days to come. Our prayers continue for those in places like Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Barbuda, Naples and the Keys who continue to suffer as a result of what has taken place during Hurricane Season Barring any future storms, I am looking forward to our Annual Blessing of Pets which will (God willing) take place on Sunday October 8th beginning at 1 PM. My dog, Molly, is very excited about this, and so am I! Till then, be safe.stay well! Wishing you fair winds and many blessings Father Bob Wagenseil frbob.wagenseil@gmail.com, (727) We have been able to reschedule Tania Aebi for Wednesday, October 4 th at 7 p.m. Wednesday night is also Fajita Night at CYC and dinner is available for cash/credit for non- CYC members. Please contact CYC for details at (727) or at office@clearwateryachtclub.org. If you enjoy: l Sailing l Imbibing l Dining l Telling sea stories l Cruising in company with other sailboats We re gathering in the Grill on the 4 th Wednesday of each month 6:30 p.m. for drinks and blather, 7 p.m. for dinner. Next Sailors Table will be Wed., October 25.

6 6 October Compass The big blow out: Hurricane Irma By Bob Griffin While Hurricane Irma was targeting Tampa Bay on Sept. 10, waterfront residents of Pinellas County were anticipating a storm surge of five to 10 feet, depending on which forecaster you listened to. Anything over six feet is bad for the barrier islands. Our boat is tied up behind our house in Indian Rocks Beach. We normally tie her up with four to five lines, but for Irma, I used 13 lines and four bungee cords. I moved the lines up and planned for a rise of five to seven feet. Then we evacuated to nearby Largo. The news told us that after the eye of the storm moved north of Tampa Bay, we were having the reverse effect a super-low tide instead of a superhigh surge. This left our boat hanging on her lines like a child on a swing set. There are several terms for this effect: A negative surge, a blowout tide, a water level set-down and a big blow out. This happens when the eye of the storm travels to the east of the Florida Coast and the winds push the water out of Tampa Bay instead of into it. We were not the only ones to get a big blow out. Naples, Fort Myers and Sarasota had it, too. A Blow Out is normally followed by a real surge rising tides. But Hurricane Irma had weakened to a category 1 hurricane after passing Tampa Bay. The surge reported in the area was only about 2.0 feet. (1.96 in St Petersburg). We certainly dodged a bullet on Hurricane Irma. I will take a big blow out over a direct hit any day. 9 October Compass 9 By Phil Beauchamp, Rear Commodore September was another fine month, beginning with our Labor Day Cookout & Games. Burgers, hotdogs, BBQ ribs and all the fixings Chef John and his galley crew did another great job, and it s big fun watching the young(er) ones enjoy the waterslide and Kid s games. They certainly love diving in the pool for the coin toss! We dodged a bullet with Hurricane Irma; she caused us to move a party that we had scheduled on the 16 th to the 23 rd, and what a party it was Havana Nights was an excellent party, hosted by Olivia Prince! An authentic cigar roller, a two-piece band playing great dancing music, Havana Rum specials over 150 attendees partying like there was no tomorrow! Join us every 2 nd Tuesday of the month for our Entertainment Committee Meeting, then stay afterwards for dinner with your friends. Gulls Tracks By Lynne Shackelford, Gulls President It s that time of year when our snow bird Gulls start migrating back to Clearwater. It s also time for the Gulls to reorganize and get ready for the year As most of you know, because of a lack of active Gulls, we had to make some choices for We continued to support the club and local charities with time and financial contributions. Unfortunately, that meant no ladies luncheons, style shows or Boatique. We will continue to sponsor Breakfast with Santa. Mark your calendars for Santa on December 16 th. We are starting to plan the 2018 year and have some ideas for bringing back the style shows and Boatique. What we need are ladies who can be active Gulls to help make plans and bring about these programs. This does require some work, mainly attending a meeting every month or so, and most importantly, having fun. Watch for upcoming notifications about our restructuring. The Book Club meets the third Tuesday of every month at 6 p.m. in the Board Room. All members and their guests are welcome to join our stimulating and fun discussions if you enjoy reading, this is the place to be! Many of us stay for dinner, and if you do plan to do so, please make reservations with Virginia at All books are predetermined by the members prior to discussion. Our upcoming meetings will feature the following: October 17 The Red Hunter By Lisa Unger Lisa Unger, the author of The Red Hunter will be at the October meeting to discuss her latest book.
