At the end of July we held our annual Junior Sailing Cocktail party and raffle which raised over $5000 and again set a new record. Congratulations to Vice Commodore Chris Lucas and his team for a spectacular evening. Many thanks to all members who donated gifts for the raffle. If the weather is as beautiful in August as in July we will have many more days of sailing, enjoy it. Words Around The House by Xavier Wauters Ah, the hot days of August are upon us. The club is in full glory. Last Monday, the Board hosted a dinner party for Jim and our stewards to thank them for a job well done since some of our stewards are already planning on returning to college. We hope to make this an annual event for these hard working individuals who help to maintain the ambience we so richly enjoy. Rocking on the porch, I was thinking August is a busy month for us with the Lobster Dinner and the Laser Regatta coming up among other events. I am looking forward to this regatta and hope this will be the beginning of hosting events such as this. Let s not forget the Covered Dish on Thursday nights. We have had a wonderful turnout with a copious amount of savory dishes. See you around the porch. Fleet News by Abraham Aragones Winter Storage Contracts By now you should have received your winter storage contract. Only about 25% have returned them so far. Please mail it back to me as soon as possible. We have some members waiting for winter storage spots, and we can t let them know until we get the contracts. This is not just for members wanting to store their boats at the club. This is also a large income for the club, and we want to have our lots at capacity if possible. PLEASE, IF YOU HAVE STORED YOUR BOAT AT THE CLUB BEFORE, AND YOU HAVE SOLD YOUR BOAT THIS YEAR AND ARE NOT PLANNING ON GETTING ANOTHER BOAT OR STORE AT THE CLUB, LET ME KNOW AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! Dinghies Over the years we have accumulated over 20 dinghies/kayaks/sunfish in the upper lot and by the trees. We are moving them to an area in the upper parking lot, so owners can see them. We ask you that if you own one of them, remove your dinghy from the club or store it in one of the designated racks immediately. Those vessels not claimed will be taken off club premises. If owners are identified, storage fees will be charged.

Fall Classic Junior Sailing by Chris Lucas Junior Sailing s annual Cocktail Party & Raffle fundraiser on August 22 nd was a tremendous success thanks to support from our membership, friends and volunteers. Perfect weather, good music, food and drink set the stage for a fun evening shared by the over 100 people. Raffle items at our event get better and better each year. This year was no exception with something for everybody from beautiful themed gift baskets, jewelry, gift certificates, original works of art and more. Our regular raffles were augmented by a number of silent auctions featuring original works of art, a vintage 1969 folding outboard engine and a 1965 Dyer Dhow sailing dinghy (see below). All in, our fundraiser was the most successful to date, thanks to those who attended or provided raffles items. I am touched by people s generosity and support of our program, and the acknowledgement that Junior Sailing is not only vital to the future of our sport, but to the future of our beloved club as well. Place your bids now Dyer Dhow dinghy To give those not present at last week s event a chance to bid, we have kept one auction open throughout this week. Generously donated by the estate of Eric Layton, this gorgeous 1965 Dyer Dhow dinghy is in pristine condition and has been lovingly restored. She is 7 9 and complete with spruce spars, Ratsey and Lapthorn sail, vintage Smoker s Quality Brand oars, bronze oarlocks, and registration documents. Photos can be viewed on the club s website at She will be on display each evening this week at the club. Place your bids now to own this classic! Bids for this beautiful dinghy will be accepted through 8:30pm on Saturday, August 9th and will be updated online several times each day. Bids will be accepted by phone, or on the bid sheet posted at the Club. The current high bid will be updated several times daily on HempsteadHarbourClub.com. Laser Update by Bill Banks It seems like this month I am reporting from the roaring 60 s. Four of the last five weeks in late June and July we raced in winds gusting to the low 20s. The other Tuesday we cancelled due to lightning and storms. Through this period Dan Rapelje took over the lead for the season, displaying great heavy air sailing skills for which he has had a lot practice days when many others wouldn t go out. We also had a guest from Seawanaka YC who had placed 2 nd in that fleet over the winter. He commented that HHC had a real good thing going in our great harbor! 3 Team race- the last Tuesday in July we had our annual team race. This is great fun after sailing all summer for your own individual record. This year the Blue team of Dan Rapelje, Dave Rapelje and Greg Hayes won the three race series. It appears the critical element for the Blue team was showing up with blues shirts with a giant shark face on the front. So it s back to knitting this winter for the Red team of Banks, Canavan and Riordan. Ward Bell Memorial Laser Regatta- August 23, HHC has been preparing to host the Laser District 8 Regatta, which Ward Bell chaired for many years before he passed away. Based on his continuing support of sailing and racing in Hempstead Harbor this one afternoon restart of the event has been named the Ward Bell Memorial Regatta for Lasers. Hempstead Harbour Book Group by Sally Davies The HHC book group has welcomed several new members over the last year. We are always ready to welcome everyone who is interested in reading and discussing good books. If you are such a reader, please join us the first Tuesday of each month at 7:15. We meet at the club during the season and at our houses during the winter. For Tuesday, September 2 we have chosen On Canaan s Side by Sebastian Barry. October s book is The Boys in the Boat by David James Brown. Please join us. Social News by Mary McCourt The house was rocking as we danced away the evening of July 19th at our Dinner Disco Zumba Night. Great job John Power and crew and many thanks for all your prep and ENERGY! I'd also like to thank Kim Piro from Kupcakes by Kimmy. who donated all those delicious and absolutely beautiful cupcakes. Be sure to get your RSVP to Meredith Brosnan ASAP. Due to overwhelming response, this event is currently at capacity. It is a favorite for sure! Movie Night is scheduled for August 16th. This has become a fun family classic hosted by the Budraitis family. Viewing is after sunset in the clubhouse. Be sure to keep an eye out for the flyer detailing this year's Commodore's Ball scheduled for September 6th. Sally Davies and Laura Fay plan a wonderful evening to thank our Commodore Al Reres. Call Bruce at Tidbits by Sara Reres Weekend Surprise It was a quiet weekend of kayaking and swimming at our friend s beautiful lake house near Great Barrington. My daughter Kathryn Sara, and her young man, Michael Mannion went for a hike at nearby Bash Bish Falls and came back an engaged couple! When the screaming and crying subsided we were treated to the sight of her beautiful diamond ring. The remainder of the weekend was spent with wedding plans galore! My daughter and her fiancé are both teachers at the Martin Burrell School and work tirelessly as supervisors at the Nassau Suffolk Services for Autism. They have devoted their professional lives to working with children with special needs and they are gifted experts in this field. Congratulations to a wonderful couple!! Worthy Recipient of the White Cap Award Despite a full time job, marriage and children, Debbie Pierce has spent years volunteering for the benefit of her hometown, Sea Cliff. She worked long and actively for the Fire Department. She sings in the Choir at St Luke s and has made gallons of jelly, chaired the Church Bazaar, pancake supper, annual picnic and church supper. As a Mutual Concerns committee volunteer, she has served thousands of meals, cheerfully and selflessly. On the Senior Action Committee, she has helped coordinate the annual senior picnic, preparing food, setting up and serving. Debbie is the first to step forward with a network of resources to help others. Dedicated to the interests of Sea Cliff, we are proud to have Debbie Pierce as a member of the Hempstead Harbour Club. Congratulations Debbie on receiving the prestigious White Cap Award!
