After our visit of winter last weekend we can start thinking about getting our boats ready for another boating season. We just need to hope the lake level stays high enough to get in and out of the channels for motor and sail boats and that they get dredged soon to expedite that. We had a tremendous showing of SLTYC members for the Opening Day on the Bay, Sunday the 27 th, in San Francisco. There were 16 members of our club on the California Hornblower. The day started a little drizzly and cloudy, but as the day progressed it gradually cleared into a pleasant day. Many thanks to Jim & Carol Crecelius for hosting a cocktail party the evening before. A committee of members has met twice to discuss the direction of the club with respect to a meeting place. We are investigating the possibility of leasing a club site in conjunction with the Windjammers club, but this is still in the early stages. We will keep you informed of future developments. Future activities are planned, both annual activities and some new ones. Check the schedule in the Heave Ho or on line. Remember, the club is only as strong as the support of members for our many activities, and we are still in need of cruise captains. Have a great start to the boating season Doug Morris, Commodore

2 HEAVE HO May Page 2 FROM THE VICE Coming quickly on May 6 th is our general membership meeting at the Four Seasons Resort on Saddle Road. Unfortunately, if you aren t reserved it s too late to sign up. The event is closed out. Our next big event is the Membership drive scheduled for June 7 th at the Cantina. In the past this event has just become a social event with good food for the members; hint, we need new members so bring a friend. The annual Blessing of The Boats with Father Grace is scheduled for June 21st. Father Grace has offered his blessing for a number of years for which we are very thankful. At the conclusion of this wonderful event we will be having a BBQ at the Keys Pavilion. I m not sure what s cooking, or even who s cooking, but I promise it ll be good. Hopefully, we will have some new members to induct. We have a General Membership meeting scheduled at Round Hill Pines on Tuesday, July 8 th. This event has always provided the most beautiful of sunsets from a beautiful beach all combined with good food. Put the date on your calendar. On July 11 th Plan to attend the West Shore Café. This is a beautiful setting on the Lake with some outrageously good food. If you can t make it by boat you can still drive and attend. The Club is still looking for different events for the summer. A mini golf and pizza outing was mentioned along with some group hikes. We should have some ladies golf events. We will have some signup sheets for the remaining vacant TGIFs and football games at our coming events. I have no way of knowing of you are receiving the E-blasts unless the is incorrect & is returned. It is very important that everyone RSVP to events within the time period allotted and as soon as possible. The response has been very slow & this makes it difficult for the members trying to make the plans for the event. Do not assume that we know you are coming because we do not know for sure. 4 HEAVE HO May Page 4 MAY PICYA REPORT On April 26, 2014, 16 SLTYC members made their way to San Francisco to celebrate the PICYA Opening Day on the Bay Attending were Jim & Carol Crecelius, Gary and Linda Gordon, Doug Morris and Joe Kennedy, Jana Plummer and Mike Middleton,, Ken Sands and Jonquil Peterson, Jack and Melissa Watson, Evan and Candi Williams and Jim and Janie Wycoff. The festivities started on Saturday night with a cocktail party at the Creceilus' lovely condominium at the Fairmont Ghiradelli Square overlooking San Francisco Bay. It was a beautiful clear evening enabling us to enjoy the fantastic view from the patio along with great company, food & drink. Sunday morning started with clouds and drizzle which evolved to blue skies and sunshine. Aboard the California Hornblower Yacht, we enjoyed a continental breakfast, a day long tour of SF Bay, a decorated boat parade and a sit down lunch. SLTYC was recognized for being the club coming from the farthest distance with the most attendees. We will look for a picture and write up in Bay and Delta Yachtsman in June. 6 HEAVE HO May Page 6 FROM THE BOAT GUY As I write this, I look out at the falling snow. Maybe there is still hope for the lake level and we still have some snow melt to help. Karen and I just returned from the warm country only to dive quickly into the cold. It s a shock when it s so immediate. I went down to the Marina today to find out what lies for the future. The employees informed me the dredging will commence either late May or early June. They would like to dredge down to elevation 6215 which equates to dredging down approximately 7 feet below the Lake Rim. Currently, any boat drawing less than 5 feet can get through the channel. They informed me 5 1 will get stuck. Sailboats drawing 4 feet have had no problem. The true key is where you go in the channel. I would not recommend multiple vessels at the same time. Now is the time to review the safety equipment on your vessel. Check the status of all your life vests, throw cushions, flashlights, fire extinguishers, lines, radios etc. Once out on the water may be too late. On another note, we still have some campouts scheduled for the summer with cruise captains still needed. The blessing of the boats is still scheduled for June 21 st to coincide with the summer solstice and our big summer BBQ at the Keys Pavilion. The natural light from the Lake is great Please check with me or Jerry; sometimes we are on a yarn roadtrip..(or lunch) Bring your current work or let me know if you need project ideas. 7 Printed by permission of LAKE TAHOE NEWS, from Monday, April 28, 2014 By Kathryn Reed CAL-OSHA officials were at Tahoe Keys Marina earlier this month looking to see if the South Lake Tahoe facility is in compliance. It s not. We are working on getting all of our forklifts and equipment up to standard, a marina employee who didn t want to be named told Lake Tahoe News. We are trying to upgrade everything to get everything up to standard so we have a good summer. Marina General Manager Robert Spinnato did not return multiple calls. Per Cal-OSHA, forklifts are not supposed to be used by Tahoe Keys Marina staff. Despite the state ban on using certain equipment, a source close to the marina told Lake Tahoe News that employees are continuing to use the equipment and did so last week to unload a handful of boats. Boats can still launch and the Fresh Ketch restaurant is open. But the marina is not supposed to be using some of its equipment because employees have not been properly trained and inspections have not regularly been completed per state law. OSHA is reportedly looking at service manuals to know when and how equipment was maintained. We have an open inspection with them. We don t release information until the investigation is complete, William Estakhri with Cal-OSHA told Lake Tahoe News. That is usually six months. The state Occupational Safety and Health Administration opens an investigation when an employee files a complaint, there has been an injury or a complaint has been filed. Cal- OSHA is designed to protect workers from health and safety hazards in the workplace. Peter Milton, spokesman for Cal-OSHA, told Lake Tahoe News that every business is supposed to have an injury and illness prevention program. They are also required to have a training and safety program. It is possible the marina will be fined if any infractions are found at the end of the investigation.the marina uses a 1979 travel lift to haul boats out. It is rated at a maximum capacity of 69,000 pounds, but has been used to transport vessels weighing more than that, according to a boat owner who didn t want to be named. The marina is also having to deal with a lake level that will be unseasonably low this year because of the drought. While an employee said the paperwork for a dredging permit has been submitted, the permitting agency said that is not true. Alan Miller with the Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board told Lake Tahoe News his office has spoken with a consultant for the marina, but no application has been submitted. He added that one is expected this week. Lahontan has 30 days to review the permit to make sure it is complete. It s possible a permit could be issued within two weeks. Miller added that he is expecting the application to be multifaceted and to also include chemical treatments. The Tahoe Keys Property Owners Association is responsible for the main channel that homeowners use. The organization has not filed for a dredging permit, according to Miller.
