1 The Tides of Datha The official newsletter of the Dataw Island Yacht Club Volume 24, No. 2 The Commodore s Corner... Gerry chesser Wow! 2015 was another great year for the Dataw Island Yacht Club. And what a great job by Commodore Al Dedel and the Board of Governors. Some truly memorable Cruises, like the Edisto luncheon, and the Morgan River Sandbar to name just two. In sail racing, the first annual Women for SAILing race was a lot of fun for the Captains and the Women crews and should grow in popularity in years to come. The social activities, as always, were the best on the Island, including the formal Commodore s Ball. The Ball is an opportunity for Yacht Club members to dress up ( the only time I wear socks on the island), have an excellent meal, and literally dance the night away with one of the best bands in the area. This year we even had our own Dick Nalwasky join in for a tune. To our retiring Social committee Chairs, Alison Barton and Jean Dietz, thank you for an OUTSTANDING job. I would also like to give a tip of the hat to our Rear Commodore, Mike Buckingham. Mike and Julie have moved off island and left the Club. Mike did a great job for the yacht club and will be missed. Personally, this is my fourth year with the yacht club, starting in 2012 as Cruise Captain with Andy Jacobs as Commodore. Andy has stayed active in the club, Commodore s Corner continued on page 2 Dataw Luminary Night Monday, December 7, 2016 Join the DIYC as we celebrate the Dataw Garden Club s 25 th Celebration of Luminary Night! 2 The Tides of Datha Thanks to ALL!... Al Dedel, Past Commodore The time has come, the walrus said, to speak of many things: of shoes and ships.. and DIYC Board members and DIYC members who not only kept it all going but continue to keep DIYC machine running well! It seems like a long way from the January Final Friday to November s Commodore s Ball, but indeed, time moves quickly. We ve done many enjoyable things this year and only hope that all were as enthused with the social and boating events as we were. When Chris and I are cruising on the river and heading into town, we get a real sense of pride looking at the Commodore s flag flying from our boat. Thankfully, that special feeling will continue with the Past Commodore s flag flying astern. And, once again, a very special thank you to all the Board members who have and continue to donate their time, talents and efforts into making the Yacht Club the very special organization that it is today. Gerry has the helm!!!! 2 Commodore s Corner (continued from page 1) serving this year as MC of the Commodore s Ball. We are fortunate that quite a few Past Commodores have stayed active. As for me, the last two years as Rear Commodore and Vice Commodore have been very rewarding. I hope this has given me the knowledge to serve as Commodore as well as the Club has come to expect. The other members of the 2016 Bridge are Vice Commodore John Huntley and Rear Commodore Wayne Vance. Both John and Wayne have held posts in the past and will be tremendous assets in piloting the yacht club. Bob Hazelrigg has accepted the Cruise Captain position after being the successful Edisto Cruise Captain last year. Noteworthy is, with the exception of Alison, Jean, and Mike, the entire Board of Governors will be returning for What a great thing providing continuity and talent for another year. The new Social Chairs will be Ann MacFarland and Valerie Hatcher, both assistants last year. The new assistants will be Jane Scher and Lenda Jablonski. Al Dedel has agreed to carry on again this year as Web Master. I look forward to another great year for The Dataw Island Yacht Club. With good weather, continuing low fuel prices, and favorable winds, we will provide fun cruise destinations, exciting sail races, and great social activities. The yacht club is here to encourage yachting, promote member participation, to foster fellowship of the members, and promote boat safety. 3 The Tides of Datha 3 Vice Commodore s Report... john huntley By Way of Introduction My wife, Betty, and I arrived by sea and land from Annapolis, Maryland, nine years ago where we had enjoyed the waters of the Chesapeake Bay for many years. Our family recreation was on the water, and in a real sense my daughter and son enjoyed sailing as an important part of their growing up. Leaving the empty nest, we departed Annapolis for Dataw Island with our black Lab, Bungee, and our cat, Georgette, sailing the ICW with all the problems that offered, e.g., shoaling, groundings, hurricanes, etc. We still sail the Spindrift, a classic Pearson ketch, docked at Dataw Marina. I have been an active member of the DIYC since arrival, having served as Sailing Fleet Captain for three years, organizing cruises on a number of occasions, and actively participating in the sailing race program. Although I have been an avid sailor for many years, my experience on the water goes far beyond sailing. Beginning on the Catawba River in South Carolina in wooden boats my Dad built in our driveway and extending to Sports Fisherman in the Bahamas. I am honored and excited to be the new Vice Commodore of DIYC with its many programs from kayaking, fishing, great recreational and social events, and a very competitive sailing fleet. As your Vice Commodore my responsibilities are to assist the Commodore in discharging his duties, act as the Safety Officer, oversee the insurance policies, oversight for Sailing and Fishing Captains, membership activities, and Ships Store. In addition, anything the Commodore assigns! Professionally, my background is the law, including a career in the FBI. Even though our Bylaws state that my professional skills and knowledge will be available to the organization, hopefully they will not be needed. I am looking forward to making a significant contribution to the DIYC, getting to know the many new members, and enjoying the camaraderie that DIYC offers. Happy New Year and Good Sailing/Boating for 2016! Rear Commodore s Report... wayne vance What a good year this was cruising with the Dataw Island Yacht Club and what a great year 2016 is going to be! I had the pleasure of serving as DIYC Fleet Captain in 2015, and we began the season with a cruise to the Dockside at Port Royal, shortly followed by a raft up in the Beaufort River while the Blue Angels performed over our heads. We cruised to lunch in downtown Beaufort, took the Intracoastal to Bohicket Marina, and then had a memorable cruise to the Edisto Yacht Club with lunch served at their club while a live band performed. The second annual trip to the Morgan River Sand Bar with the Fripp Island Yacht Club was a great party and is a tradition to continue. The success of the DIYC cruises depends on the leadership of the Captains of each cruise, and we have to thank Bob Welborn, Mike Buckingham, Bill Krebs, Andy Jacobs, Bob Hazelrigg, Dan Barton, John Carter and Stan Hudson for their time and commitment in making 2015 a cruising success! Bob Hazelrigg so enjoyed leading the wildly successful Edisto Cruise last year (most boats since 2008) that he has taken on the role of the 2016 DIYC Cruise Captain. As you can see from his article on page 4, he is well underway planning a terrific upcoming season including perennial favorites and attractive new ideas. In addition to working with Bob and our 2016 cruises, among my responsibilities as Rear Commodore is oversight of DIYC communications. We use a number of avenues to reach out to DIYC Members and keep all of us up to date about the Club and its activities. A DIYC website is maintained to keep members and potential members fully informed about the club, and it includes upcoming events, a collection of past newsletters and underlying DIYC organizational information see it at An list is kept for reaching our members, and Cindy Schafer is invaluable in ing us about the many upcoming DIYC events. The DIYC scheduled events are also included in the Dataw Island Club calendar. Finally, this newsletter is sent out twice a year to members, and a DIYC Membership Directory is prepared and distributed annually. There is no reason for anyone to miss out on all the good times!

4 The Tides of Datha 4 Cruise News... Bob Hazelrigg, Cruise Captain We are looking forward to an exciting 2016 on our beautiful waters! Dates are not finalized but we have tentative plans for a number of day trips and even a few overnighters that we think will be appealing to a broad range of our membership. We were hoping for a luncheon cruise to the Dockside Restaurant on Ladys Island since the Port Royal Dockside remains closed but they are unable to accommodate us so our first cruise of the year will be to another venue in Beaufort. The overnight trips are planned for Bohicket, Hilton Head (probably either Windmill Harbour or Wexford) and Charleston. We hope to incorprate a sailboat race in conjunction with the Charleston cruise which will add an interesting dimension to the Holy City cruise. Dan Barton has once again graciously agreed to coordinate the Morgan River sandbar trip with the fun folks from Fripp Island. There have been some suggestions to move that popular day to the fall to enjoy some cooler weather and Dan is exploring that possibility with Fripp. Other day trips plans include cruises to Beaufort and Capers Island. Last years trip to Edisto was so well received that we have asked them to consider a home and home. Regardless of their ultimate interest in hosting us again next year we will be hosting their club and we will have to work diligently to return the hospitality they extended to us. We also have plans for a raft up in Bass Creek. This should be great fun because it is so close and a very beautiful spot. Speaking of raft ups, considering that the weather has been so uncooperative the past couple of years, many of the planned cruises have been cancelled or lightly attended so this year we plan to look at the forecast four or five days out and have a number of imprompu raft trips. As was mentioned earlier, nothing has been finalized, so your thoughts and suggestions are most welcome. If you would like to volunteer to be a cruise captain for any of the above days please contact me, otherwise I will be calling on you! Let s hope for fair skies and favorable winds. Check out the DIYC Website at You will find an event calendar, photo gallery, membership information, newsletters, resources, and more. Use the Contact Us tool to send in your suggestions to make our site even better! Not a member of the DIYC? Contact Membership Chair Carol Luzzi for a membership form. (See contact information for Carol in Membership article on the right.) If you would like more information about our organization, contact any of the members of our Board of Governors, listed on page 2. (See Membership article below.) 2016 Dataw Island Yacht Club Membership Drive... carol luzzi, Membership Chair The DIYC is one of the largest organizations on Dataw. There are approximately individuals who belong to the DIYC. Boat owners comprise 57% of the membership. These are the owners of power boats (28%), sailboats (10%) and kayaks (19%). The remaining members are always welcome to crew on cruises throughout the year. All DIYC members should be on the lookout for their 2015 Renewal Forms which will have been delivered to your message boxes by December 4. Please remember to return the COMPLETED form ASAP, even if you decide not to renew your membership, as it greatly helps with the record keeping. Of course, you can join the DIYC any time. But if you wish to be included in our 2016 Membership Directory, we will need your form back by January 31, If you wish to join the Dataw Island Yacht Club as a new member, forms are available at the Community Center, and can also be downloaded from our website www. 5 The Tides of Datha 5 Sailing Fleet Report... Roy Crocker, Sailing Captain The DIYC Sailing Fleet has had an active 2015 with eight monthly races and two regattas. Up to eight boats sailed in our monthly races, and the DIYC fleet had strong participation in major local sailing events that included the Jean Ribaut Cup in Port Royal Sound which is sponsored by the Beaufort Yacht and Sailing Club, and the Dataw Cup sponsored by DIYC. All these races are handicap events using the PHRF system to compensate for the speed differences among the various types and sizes of boats. At the end of the year the results of all these events will be combined the determine the DIYC 2015 Sailing Fleet Champion. A highlight of our monthly races this year was the inaugural Ladies Day Race held on September 21. The crews for this race were made up predominately of persons of the fairer sex. The over 20 ladies who participated in this event all acquitted themselves very well on the race course, and there was unanimous consent among the participants that this should become an annual event. It should be mentioned that the male captains and the few male crew members aboard enjoyed the contest a great deal and also were highly in favor of having a repeat performance of this event. An active schedule has been developed for Sixteen races including the Ribaut Cup, Dataw Cup and Ladies Day Race are planned. Our season starts in January with monthly events scheduled through December so the sailors will have plenty of opportunity to display their seamanship skills. It also looks like we will be getting a couple of additional boats joining the Sailing Fleet in 2016 so the fleet appears to be alive and well DIYC SAILING FLEET RACE SCHEDULE Monday, January 11 Race in Morgan River. 6 The Tides of Datha 6 An update from your Social Committee... alison barton and jean dietz What a grand year! The Social Committee of the Dataw Island Yacht Club was busy. Members enjoyed the annual Pig Pickin in May and the Boat Hop in July. The Potluck Dinner in September filled the gazebo with tasty home cooked dishes to share with friends. It was also the platform to highlight the first women s sailboat race. An impressive award ceremony followed. Way to go ladies! We hope this will be an annual event. The Commodore s Ball was the social finale to our year, staged with a heartwarming theme, Anchored in Friendship. It was truly a celebration with friends. A wall of burgees proudly decorated the ballroom, representing the many yacht clubs that have come to visit our island. Sparkling lights arched over the dance floor adding to the elegance of the night. The success of all these social events couldn t happen without our active yacht club members who never hesitate to join in the fun and help volunteer. We want to offer a very special thanks to each of you and to our Commodore, Al Dedel, for his unending help and support. As we bid farewell, we welcome in the new Social Co-Chairs, Ann MacFarland and Valerie Hatcher. These amazing ladies, who will be assisted by Jane Scher and Lenda Jablonski, are ready to plan a new year of exciting events. We wish our new Commodore, Gerry Chesser, the best of success. Alison and Jean Setting Sails! Thank you to Melanie Gentile for taking all of the wonderful Commodore s Ball pictures on pages 6 10 (and on pages 1 & 2)!
