1 LIFTLINE A PUBLICATION OF THE OC SKI CLUB JANUARY Powder Day At Mount Snow! December 12, 2016 I m Out of Control Let the Revolution begin (around the sun) We are off to a great start with a lot of Fresh Powder. Founder s day at Mount Snow and the Okemo Resort weekend had AWESOME conditions. It shouldn t be too late to get in on some great skiing and snowboarding. Predictions continue for a cold wet Winter, so far I have not been disappointed. Resolutions to think about Buy new gear or better gear- I have been lucky the last few years thanks to my awesome wife Jamie to be able to upgrade my equipment which was President s Corner Matt Fabrizio, President Happy New Year!!! worse for wear and falling apart. I had no idea how much difference it would make in my abilities and eventually convinced me to invest in fitted boots after 20+ years of off the shelf gear. Feel free to ask Club members for recommendations, they ll have plenty and it is a great conversation starter for new members to get to know experienced skiers and boarders in the Club. Get in shape stay in shape- the best way to prevent injuries is to be proactive and exercise and warm up before attempting something physically difficult. A lot of injuries happen early in the day from not warming Save The Date! The OC Ski Club s winter carnival Saturday March 11 th at Magic Mountain up or later when fatigue sets in. Make sure you prepare for your ski vacations ahead of time and start slow with a few runs and work your way up to some challenging awesome experiences. Bring a friend- if you have anyone that is interested in what the Club has to offer get them on a ski bus the more the merrier! It s a great way to share an activity that you love. Take lessons teach lessons- even Olympic athletes have coaches and are always improving their form, you may pick up a small tip that makes a big difference in your technique. Games Prizes Ski Race For more experienced Club members sometimes getting back to the basics teaching new members will get you in tune with what you are doing and correct bad habits. Ski somewhere new- one of the great benefits of the Club is all the resorts we visit by bus and the ever changing trips we put together. These experiences allow us to find challenging new terrain and see beautiful backdrops to some awesome adventures. If you have never taken a trip with the Club I highly recommend talking to a trip leader for details and availability. Stay safe see you on the slopes! Administration December started with a wonderful Holiday Party attended by 67 of us thank you Sharon Gosden for hosting. Dec 13 was the first giveaway of Mount Snow lift tickets and other items, hosted by Tred Hulse of Fox Sports 980. The next one is scheduled for Jan 4. 2 New Year, New Fun The hustle & bustle of the holidays is behind us. We typically look at Jan 1st as a new beginning. So why not look for something new to have fun with. With the OC s that is easy. We have such a large group of people that there is a ton of fun stuff to do. The one thing about this Club is we do not stop all year long. Sure Winter is our focus but the OC s know how to suffer thru the summer also. Why not ask around on what s happening. Why not ask about doing something that you thought others would have fun with. The Club is always looking for new & fun ideas. Sometimes even bringing back something that we did a few years back. Organized Skiing Fred Haefeli aka Woodtick, Vice President for Organized Skiing skiing@ocskiclub.org Now might be a good time to do it again. So don t be shy, we NEED our Club s members input on what YOU want to do. Just come up to either Cathy Marvin, VP of Admin, or Mark Wilder, Activities & Entertainment Chairman with your ideas. If it is a fun idea about snow/ski/xc/snowshoe/ ski area to visit/etc. let me know so we can discuss. The new Website continues to be a work in progress with a live date not too far off but we ve started with the weekly which you should have noticed in the past few weeks. Subscribe yourself to catch a copy if you aren t on the list already It s a preview of what s to come and is looking quite nice!!! Remember! Winter Carnival is Coming! Just show your membership card at the ticket window to get the reduced rate. If you have children and they need ID cards, see membership to get one. They are only $5 and will list your child s name and affiliation with the OC Ski Club. Many ski areas require that each adult and child show a card to receive the discounted ticket price. Joyce Bard is chairing the Winter Carnival, March 11, Saturday at Magic Mountain. The Club is excited to return to this special mountain now under new ownership. Nicole Bouchez will be organizing the annual Club race in the morning. Joyce needs help organizing the events of the day, especially the games to be held later in the day. Start getting your tug-of-war teams together. Who will be the strongest this year??? Next big event after the holidays will be the Committee Fair, Thursday, Jan. 19, chaired by Bob Hossan. All the committees will be present with great games, lots of prizes, and lots of fun. This is your opportunity to learn about all the committees that run this wonderful Club. We always need more volunteers to meet the needs. If you are interested, come out and meet the Chairpersons, talk about the committee and have some fun. Of course you may walk away with free lift tickets, gift certificates, overnight vacation package, and swag. Be sure to sign the history scroll and browse through the old photo albums and LiftLines. After 50+ years, we have lots of history to share. Continue those Snow Dances, the Ski/Board season is on! I am loving the snow, lots of snow. OC Family, Happy New Year and welcome 2017! I hope your holidays were pleasant and you were able to ski over the school vacation. It seems to be a good start to the ski season with snow already hitting the slopes in measurable amounts, as of my writing this article in the beginning of December without doubt will be another great year for OC Family. If the annual Smugglers Notch trip is any OC Family Corner Matt Wakefield, Family Liaison mattw63@verizon.net measure of a successful year, Paul O Reilly has assisted me in putting together the largest Smuggs trip yet with close to 100 people and 18 condos, the OC s will rule Smugglers Notch on MLK weekend. For Skiing specials I have been able to arrange with Maple Ski Ridge for OC Members and their families, Tuesdays Thursdays, 3 9 PM $10.00 lift tickets and on Fridays from 3-9 PM tickets are $15.00 with your membership card. For 2017 the Club will continue to have regular posted FAMILY BUSES throughout the season as well as ANY SUNDAY that we offer a second bus, that second bus will be designated a family bus. As for future Family things I am looking into a Spring Jay Peak Hotel Water Park Spring Family trip. For those of you that can look into Summer, the annual OC Yankees / Red Sox game bus trip is booked and we are taking reservations for the 110 seats we have for the August 12th, 2017 Saturday afternoon game. Please stay up to date with all the Family events by having your name on my list as well as regularly checking on Family events posted on the OC Web site. See you on the slopes! Yankees / Red Sox Bus Trip Save the Date: Sat, August 12th, 2017

4 Alpine Bus Committee Eileen Finn-LeMatty & Lynda Heaney Let it snow!! We have had 3 buses run so far (there were probably more but we write articles mid-month!) Our first Bus to Okemo was on November 27th. We had 40 riders. It was a great start to the season!! Unfortunately, the next few buses did not have enough sign ups so we had to cancel them. The mountains were kind enough to give our drive up groups the same lift ticket cost an OC bus group would have, so some people still enjoyed a ski day at the OC rate. At one, any member with their card could drive up and get the rate and at the other it was required that the group arrive together and have a leader purchase the tickets the same way the bus leader does. Thank you to Kim and Maggie. Buses began to fill again for 12/11. Let s keep the momentum going and keep filling buses!!! Here is a reminder: The Policy is that we MUST have 21 pre-paid bus riders in order to send the bus. Please remember, we as members and applicants are only paying $12 for a bus ride. The Bus cost, however, can be anywhere from $800 - $1200. A full bus of 55 collects only $660. Not quite the full cost. Your dues, and the income from the various fundraisers (the Volleyball Tournament being the largest) supplement the difference. So, when we have less than 21, we simply cannot justify sending out a bus that costs $800+. That was our issue for Nov. 20, Dec. 4 and Dec.9. Also to remind everyone, Brown Coach is very good to us. Our buses are ordered for the season by October and we are able to add a bus during the season when needed. So, when we were asked to confirm our buses by NOON 2 days prior to the ski day, we obliged. This has been our procedure for several years now. So please understand that we must follow the policy. On another note, remember that the Committee Tables open for business at 6:30pm on Thursdays. We may arrive minutes prior, but only to get organized and prepare for the evening. Please give us the time to set up so that we can assist you in whatever business you may need to conduct. It would be helpful if you could hold your questions until there is no line at the tables. Once everyone has completed their transaction, and the Committee person is done with their paperwork, then come on up and ask your question. You can your questions to us anytime, that saves time at the meeting. You will likely receive a reply, especially a confirmation for your PayPal transaction, within 24 hours, but it might be in the evening since many of us are still at work until 5:00pm and cannot reply during the day. With buses, we do add names to the bus list as the PayPal comes in to the , we just may not send the confirmation right away. Please be patient. IF you do not receive a confirmation within 48 hours, send an to ocbus and we will check to be sure it was received. We will let you know right away. Always bring your receipt with you- just in case, and we will see you on the buses! OC COMMITTEE FAIR JANUARY 19 Save the Date! Put it on your Calendar!
