1 SA NIPPERS NATIONALS 2010 INTRODUCTION The Eastern Cape is gearing up t hst the 2010 SA Nipper Natinals, frm Thursday 8 th t Saturday 10 th April 2010, at Kings Beach in Prt Elizabeth, hsted by the Kings Beach Surf Lifesaving Club. April 2010 is a mnth filled with fun and activity n the Eastern Cape beaches, and the Nippers Natinals fllws n frm The Splash Festival ver the Easter Weekend. Each year attracts arund 1000 Nippers frm 29 Clubs thrughut Suth Africa. 5 Caches per team, 40 Officials and 5 Administratrs are als invlved, n a vlunteer basis. Alng with this cmes the whle family aspect as parents and siblings invariably accmpany the nippers. Nippers Natinals rtate annually acrss the 3 castal regins, allwing the Eastern Cape, Kwa Zulu Natal and Western Cape t each hst the event n their wn turf. A Nipper is a term used t identify a yung member f the lifesaving mvement, wh is between 8 t 14 years ld. Suth Africa s Nippers are an imprtant part f the rganisatin and the clubs are specifically invlved with the training and develping f Suth African yuth in the primary principles f Surf & Pl Safety. Nippers are really the nursery fr the lifeguards f tmrrw. The three-day event will see clubs cmpeting fr winners titles acrss varius challenges: Flags An individual event in which cmpetitrs lay face dwn with heads in ppsite directin f the batns. The bdy must be flat n the sand. When the gun fires, cntestants jump, turn abut and sprint tward the batn. The prcess f eliminatin is fllwed t determine the winner ie the last cntestant t successfully take hld f the batn. Beach Sprint The individual event is a 60 / 70 / 80 meter lng sprint, depending n the age f the cntestant.

2 Lng Run This individual event is a 800 / 1000 / 1200 meter run, depending n the age f the cntestant. Beach Relay Each relay team cnsists f 4 cmpetitrs. A batn is passed between each team member. The team t crss the finish line first wins the event. Run Swim Run An individual event where Nippers run alng the beach, swim arund a marker buy and finish after a secnd beach run. Bdy Bard Cmpetitrs start at the starting line hlding their bdy bards. At the signal they race arund the buys and return t crss the finish line in pssessin f their craft. Taplin Relay A relay team event f 4 cmpetitrs 1 runner, 1 swimmer, 1 bdy bard paddler and 1 malibu bard. Bard This event makes use f a kneebard. The start and finish is as per the bady barding event. Irn Nipper A gruelling individual event. Each cntestant des 3 cnsecutive events swimming, bdy bard and Malibu bard. Welcme t Kings Beach Surf Lifesaving Club Lifesaving is a FUN sprt that invites kids (bys and girls) f all ages t participate in varius beach and sea activities in a hme away frm hme club envirnment. Our primary purpse is t teach the kids water safety and hw t respect the sea. Our mtt is FUN IN THE SUN, and we ffer a dynamic scial atmsphere fr kids and parents alike. There is als the cmpetitive aspect which invlves Clubs, lcal and natinal, cmpeting in varius cmpetitins and challenges, but again ur fcus at this level is fr everyne t have FUN IN THE SUN. Determining age grups. 6-7 years Micr Nippers (we d nt take kids that are nt yet 6) 8-9 years Under years Under years Under years Junir Lifeguards Yur age at the midnight n 30 th September determines which age grup yu will qualify fr the seasn. The seasn fficial starts in Octber and ends in April the fllwing year, as this is when we hld ur natinal champinships. Fr example if yu are 9 n 30 Sept 2009 yu will cmpete as U10 fr the perid Oct 2009 t April If yu turn 10 n 1 Octber yu will still cmpete as a U10 fr the seasn. The nly exceptin is fr smene turning 8. The day yu turn 8 yu may cmpete in cmpetitins prviding yu have passed the relevant entrance test. Qualifying tests Nipper/Junirs must successfully cmplete a Level test /Lifeguard Award t be able t cmpete in the respective age grups. This test cnsists f a swim test in the pl (as belw), a swim in the sea, first aid and water safety thery.

6 U10 Level 1 Swim 300m in 8 minutes U12 Level 2 Swim 400m in 10 minutes U14 Level 3 Swim 400m in 9 minutes Junirs Lifeguard award Varius Nipper test fees are included in the membership fee but Junir exam fees are nt included and are R250. Cmpetitins The Nippers cmpete in the fllwing cmpetitins during the seasn 1 Carnival in Plett 1 r mre carnivals in PE East Cape Champinships (n venue annunced yet) SA Natinal Champinships (in PE 8-10 April 2010) We are planning t hst varius surf series n Friday nights t stimulate the level f cmpetitin. Entrance fees int all Nipper cmpetitins (except SA Natinals) are included in the membership fees. The Junirs cmpete at the same cmpetitins as the Senir lifeguards and their main cmpetitins are: East Cape Champinships (n venue annunced yet) SA Natinal Champinships (in PE early April 2010) Duties This is the main reasn we run the club and we take this respnsibility seriusly. All junir members will be required t d vluntary duty n the beach. This will be tgether with experienced senir lifeguards and are dne n Sunday s and all Public hlidays. Friday evenings frm 4:45 Onwards Sundays 11am 1pm Structures All ur caches are all qualified lifeguards. We have a head cach fr each age grup and at least 2 ther caches helping per age grup. The SA Natinals is the pinnacle f the seasns with club cmpeting fr natinal titles.
