2 THE SERVE Every rally in Handball is initiated with a serve, and thus its imprtance is paramunt. The serve is als the nly time that a player has cmplete cntrl ver the pint. As well as initiating the pint, the server can als retain cntrl ver the pint by hitting a serve that wuld dictate what type f return wuld be hit. The aim f the serve culd be defined as: T make a pint by serving an irretrievable ball r by putting the ppnent in as much returning difficulty as pssible. In relatin t the serves in Handball it is imprtant t remember that there is n set amunt f serves, and creative ability can call fr any type f serve t be used. As well as that, serves can be executed in an ffensive r defensive mde. Fr example: a) A pwer serve may be executed with the aim f getting an unreturnable pint b) A lb serve may be executed t frce a weak ff-hand return frm the ppnent in rder fr the server t gain immediate advantage in the ensuing rally. REMEMBER! 3 1 LOW POWER SERVE (40X20, 60X30 & ONE-WALL) Ball shuld be cntacted lw and hit with pwer In mst cases shuld be directed twards the ppnents weak hand Pint f cntact n frnt wall is divisin f distance between server and sidewall Ball kept lw s as t bunce just behind the shrt line Can be executed with underhand, sidearm r lw-sidearm. 4 2 DEEP POWER SERVE (ONE-WALL) *THIS SERVE IS ONLY A RECOMMENDED SERVING OPTION FOR THE ONE-WALL CODE* Can be executed with underhand, verhand r sidearm Primary aim f this serve is t hit the ball with pwer, aiming t bunce deep in the back curt, as clse t the back line as pssible If using the verhand strke, the ball shuld be bunced abve shulder height t allw ease f the verhand swing Pint f cntact n frnt wall is divisin f distance between server and sideline In mst cases shuld be directed twards the ppnents weak hand Can be used frm either side f the curt, as shwn. 4 GAAHandball.ie The Serve

7 5 STRAIGHT LOB SERVE (40X20 & 60X30) This serve can be executed using either the verhand r the underhand strke If using the verhand strke, the ball must be bunced abve shulder height t allw ease f the verhand swing Pint f cntact n frnt wall is t be clse t the side wall, with the ball returning alng the sidewall as clse as pssible Ball shuld be n the descending arc as it reaches the back wall Aim t strike the ball as high n the frnt wall as pssible, whilst buncing just ver the service line, fr the mst effective use f this serve The Serve GAAHandball.ie 7

8 6 TWO WALL LOB SERVE (40X20 & 60X30) This serve can be executed using either the verhand r the underhand strke If using the verhand strke, the ball must be bunced abve shulder height t allw ease f the verhand swing Pint f cntact n frnt wall shuld be slightly ff centre, clser t the wall yu are aiming t descend ff Ball shuld be n the descending arc as it reaches the side wall, cutting in lw ff the sidewall, clse t the back wall Ball shuld nt reach the back wall
