6 a message from the Jimmy Fund director Dear Walk Participants, This year marks a special milestone for the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk presented by Hyundai, our 25th anniversary. Each year of the Walk has been unique and the one thing that remains the same is the support from our participants. For that, I would like to thank you for your unwavering commitment and dedication. The Jimmy Fund Walk has grown to raising the most money of any single-day walk in the nation. We ve become a community that shares 24 years of stories: why teams have formed, family and friends coming together, and celebrating loved ones, all while sharing the same goal of supporting Dana-Farber s mission to conquer cancer. fundraising efforts help improve the lives of adult and pediatric patients at Dana-Farber. 7 4 who we are ABOUT THE WALK The Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk presented by Hyundai is the largest single-day participatory event to benefit the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and raises the most money of any single-day walk in the nation. The Walk is supported by the Boston Athletic Association, and it is the only event, other than the Boston Marathon itself, that travels along the historic 26.2-mile route from Hopkinton to Boston. Now celebrating its 25th anniversary, the Walk has been raising money to conquer cancer for a quarter century. The Walk has raised nearly $90 million for research and care to support patients with all forms of cancer at Dana-Farber. In 2012, the event drew nearly 8,000 walkers from 37 states and 4 countries. 8 25th Anniversary 25 years ago, approximately 600 Jimmy Fund supporters walked the Boston Marathon course during the first annual Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk in Proceeds from the walk totaled $161,000, a record amount for a first-time Jimmy Fund event. 5

9 6 fundraising information WALKER AGREEMENT Fundraising Minimum As a registered walker, you commit to raise a minimum of $300 by September 30, Children 12 years and younger on Walk day commit to raising a minimum of $100. Additional funds above the minimum can be submitted through October 31, Credit Card Policy To complete registration, all participants must provide credit card information. In the event that the fundraising minimum is not met by September 30, 2013, the participant s credit card is charged the remaining balance. Example: If a walker has raised $200 by September 30, 2013, the credit card the walker used to pay the registration fee is charged the remaining $100. Cancellation Policy Participants who cancel by noon September 6, 2013, are not responsible for the fundraising minimum. Any registered walkers (excluding Virtual Walkers see page 21 for details) who have not cancelled by this date are required to submit the fundraising minimum even if they do not attend the event. Your registration fee is non-refundable and non-transferable. to cancel your registration, contact the Walk staff by noon September 6, 2013, at JimmyFundWalk@dfci.harvard.edu or how to collect gifts Ask people to support your Walk by giving in any of the following ways: Online Encourage supporters to use credit cards to make online gifts through your walk fundraising page. Download the Walk Facebook Fundraising Application. Friends will learn of your fundraising goal and be encouraged to give through automatic newsfeed alerts that appear on your profile page.

10 Checks or Money Orders All checks should be made payable to Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk. If checks are made out to you, please endorse the back as Pay to the order of Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk, and sign your name. Matching Gifts Thousands of companies match all or a portion of a charitable gift made by an employee. Have your supporters check with their Human Resources departments to find out if their workplaces have this kind of program to help support your Walk. Gifts of Stock/Securities Making gifts of stock or securities rather than cash is easy and offers many benefits. If this option appeals to you or your supporters, visit JimmyFund.org/stocks for more information. how to submit gifts Please do not submit cash at any time. If a supporter gives you cash, please submit a money order or check made payable to Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk for the amount of the cash gift. Send gifts in a timely manner to: Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk P.O. Box 3595 Boston, MA Please submit gifts for one walker per envelope. Do not put gifts for multiple walkers in the same envelope. Please allow two weeks for processing. To ensure proper credit for your fundraising efforts, please be sure to include the following in each submission envelope: Gifts collected to support your Walk Name and participant ID number with return address on outside of envelope Please note: Your participant ID number can be found on your MyHQ Web page. GIFT ACKNOWLEDGMENT FROM DFCI Supporters receive a tax acknowledgment in the mail if they submit a check of $50 or more. The letter is sent to the name and address printed on the check. Supporters receive a tax acknowledgment if they make a credit card gift online. 7

11 8 follow the path to fundraising success Going the distance on Walk day is only half the battle. Every dollar you raise makes a difference in Dana-Farber s mission to conquer cancer. The steps below highlight a handful of fundraising tips and tools. Kick Start Your Walk Start off your fundraising by giving a gift to yourself. Motivate others to support your Walk by showing your commitment! Get Going Achieve the $300 fundraising minimum by reaching out to family and friends and asking for a specific gift amount. Direct supporters to your Walk fundraising page, and be sure to take advantage of the new Walk Mobile App, Facebook Fundraising App, How to raise $300 in 7 days document, and other materials to help promote your fundraising efforts. Double Your Efforts Matching gifts are a great way to increase your fundraising. Many companies will match a participant s fundraising dollars, or will directly match a supporter s gift. Talk to your Human Resources department and remind your donors to inquire about matching gifts within their own companies. Go the Extra Mile Raise $1,500 to reach Star Pacesetter status and earn great rewards. Here are a few fundraising tips to help you reach this goal: Post the link to your Walk fundraising page within your Facebook status updates. You can also host a dinner party, trivia night, bake sale, or yard sale where financial contributions directly support your Walk fundraising efforts!* Mark Your Milestones Send a personalized message to donors thanking them for their support, or use one of the available Walk Thank You sample letters found in the Tools section on the Walk s website. Gratitude goes a long way, especially when you approach supporters again next year! 14 walking as a team Take advantage of training, fundraising, and walking together! START A TEAM! Team up with family members and friends, or start a corporate team to further engage your colleagues with a universal cause. Walking with others is a fun way to share the event day experience. Team Captains have access to the Walk s Tools section, JimmyFundWalk.org/tools, where ideas can be found on how to fundraise as a team and how to grow your team. Alumni Team Captains are also great resources to give you tips and advice about leading a team. Connect with a Captain by ing jimmyfundwalk@dfci.harvard.edu, using the subject line 2013 Team Captain Inquiry. JOIN A TEAM! Contact the Walk staff if you are an individual participant looking to join forces with a team. The Walk staff can help pair you with a group from your local community, or a group walking from a similar start location. For more information call or send an to jimmyfundwalk@dfci. harvard.edu. TEAM RECOGNITION Set your fundraising sights high and aim to be a top team in 2013! The top 10 teams* in each of the following categories are recognized at the annual Extra Mile Brunch: top fundraising teams, top new teams, top tribute teams, and top corporate and community teams. In addition, the top 10 teams with the most Pacesetters and 100 percent Pacesetters will be highlighted at the Brunch. * Teams are considered for recognition only if there are at least five members and every team member has satisfied the Walk s minimum fundraising requirement. 11

15 12 walk weekend The Walk will be held Sunday, September 8. Please refer to pages 14 through 21 for details about starting times, directions, and transportation for each route. WHAT TO BRING Seasoned walkers recommend you bring a small backpack or fanny pack with the following items: Camera Sunglasses and sunscreen even if it s not sunny (TIP: Sweat- and water-resistant sunscreen works best) Extra socks (TIP: Rather than cotton, try a pair made of wicking material) A mini first-aid kit with adhesive bandages and pain relievers Wallet with ID and a small amount of cash and/or credit card Cell phone WHAT NOT TO BRING Large strollers or carriages (Only collapsible carriages are permitted on buses) Inline skates, skateboards, bicycles, scooters, etc. Pets Help the Walk Go Green In an effort to be environmentally friendly, the Walk staff encourages participants to carpool or take public transportation. WHERE TO GO and what to do Start At each of the starting locations and at early check-in, there will be designated areas to do the following: Pick Up Bib and T-Shirt If you haven t received your bib and/or T-shirt you can pick them up at the start Drop Off Money Turn in any money that you have collected and not yet submitted at any of the registration tables (refer to page 6 for information on collecting and submitting gifts) Pacesetter Items Walkers who were Pacesetters in 2012 or who have raised $1,500 in 2013 can pick up their bibs, T-shirts, socks, hats, and pins if they have not received them * If you have already received your bib and T-shirt, you may begin walking and do not need to check in. Feel free to enjoy refreshments and pick up a hat if you don t have one.

16 Along the Route Support is provided for walkers on each route: 12 refueling stations are located along the course with snacks, beverages, port-a-johns, and medical support Lunch is available to walkers on the 26.2-mile and 13.1-mile courses Medical sweep buses drive along the Walk route. To catch a ride, wait at a refueling station or at a mile marker along the course Finish The finish line celebration is located at Copley Square in Boston. For detailed information and directions, please refer to page 22. Early Check-in Walkers may check in, register for the Walk, and pick up bibs and T-shirts Saturday, September 7, from 1 to 4 PM at Babson College. * Please note that the registration fee during early check-in is $40 rather than $25. Babson College, Knight Auditorium 231 Forest Street Babson Park, MA Early Check-in Driving Directions & Parking Parking at Babson College is only available on Saturday for Early Check-in. There is no parking on campus Sunday. Please refer to the route details section on page 16 for more information. From Points North and South Follow Interstate 95/Route 128 to Exit 21 (21B from the north) for Route 16 Newton/Wellesley. At the end of the exit ramp, follow signs for Route 16 West (Washington Street). Follow Route 16 for approximately 2 miles and turn left onto Forest Street. (This will be the seventh light and there is a sign directing you to Babson). Proceed on Forest Street for approximately 1 mile (passing through one major intersection with a four-way stop). The main entrance to Babson College will be on your right. From Points East or West Take the Massachusetts Turnpike (Interstate 90) to Interstate 95/Route 128. After the tolls, follow signs to Route 95/128 South to Exit 21B (Route 16 Newton/Wellesley) and follow the directions above. 13

Shuttle Bus Information from Finish Line Walkers starting at Dana-Farber can take the MBTA Green Line s D (Riverside) branch to Longwood Station, or drive and park in the 375 Longwood Garage. Buses will be available to return walkers to Dana-Farber upon completion of the Walk. * Please note that no shuttle buses will go to the Dana- Farber start prior to the Walk. Buses from Copley Square Finish to Dana-Farber...3:30 5 PM Bus pick-up is located between the John Hancock Tower and the Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel at Trinity Church virtual walker option For those who are unable to attend the Walk September 8, you can still raise funds to conquer cancer as a Virtual Walker. FROM POINTS WEST Take the Massachusetts Turnpike (Interstate 90) to Exit 22 Copley Square/ Prudential Center. Keep right at the fork and follow signs toward Copley. Merge onto Route 9 East/Stuart Street. Walkers and volunteers may be dropped off at the corner of Route 9 and Trinity Place, and walk up Trinity Place to Copley Square. To park, continue straight to 100 Clarendon Street to the Garage at 100 Clarendon, which will be on your right. Take the MBTA Take the Green Line (any branch) to Copley Station. Walk toward Copley Square at the intersection of Boylston Street and Dartmouth Street.
