The half Tawa were good value for their win and it would have been hard on them to have lost the game.. Wests are a good side with a lot of skillful young players that will go on to play at higher levels. They are good at keeping possession and looking to build attacks. In saying that, it is a lot drew to a close at 1-0 and it was a fair reflection of the game, Tawa scoring everyone to see it come off. easier to play that way when training every day - not every side has that WESTERN SURBURBS Saturday 28 May 2016 vs Western Surburbs at Redwood Park Match day 8 saw Tawa at home again for the third week in a row as they hosted Western Suburbs at Redwood Park. This local derby takes on greater importance than normal as a loss here to Tawa would see them well and truly out of the running for the league title, for Wests a win would see them consolidate their position in second place. Wests have a reputation for playing possession football and as the first half kicked off it was apparent that they were going to try play this way at all costs. Whilst the football they played looked nice they weren t really threatening Tawa s goal, Tawa were from the only clear cut chance of the half and not looking troubled when Wests had the ball. The second half kicked off and the pattern of play was the same as in the first, Wests spraying the ball around at the back but not really getting in behind Tawa and creating any chances. Tawa s discipline was impressive, with Jake and Mike performing their defensive roles well and with Sam providing an outlet when Tawa won the ball, allowing At 2-0 it looked like game over but Wests had other ideas. A rash challenge inside the box from Craig with about twenty minutes to go resulted in a penalty which Wests duly dispatched: 2-1 and it was game on. From that point on Wests attacked relentlessly in an attempt to get the equaliser, their left back was getting a lot of the ball and driving behind the defence, sending in crosses or driving into the box. Tawa scrambled well to clear all of these attacks, Lance made a couple of great luxury - and Tawa were set up well to combat that style of football. Next weekend sees a double header for Tawa on Queen s birthday weekend, they are away to a struggling Brooklyn side in the league on the Saturday and will play host to Marist on Monday in the Chatham Cup. Tawa will need two wins from these games to keep their momentum going, make a push for the league title and to hopefully go on a good cup run. 10 TAWA AFC TAWA AFC 11

7 TAWA BLUES "The second half was in some ways an anticlimax. They battled but never really looked like scoring..." VS WAINUI Tawa Blues v Wainui (4-0) Having been very very disappointed with our performance last week it was important that we bounced back and made sure that we didn t suffer 3 defeats in a row. The key message from the coach was to relax and believe in ourselves and our abilities. Through the wind and the hail we battled (it seems that we play better playing against the wind in the first half) and by half time found ourselves 3-0 up. The first goal was brilliant probably one of the best team efforts we ve scored great build up play and then a stunning cross from Matt on the right. Dye rose above the defender and headed it brilliantly into the top corner, giving the keeper no chance. From then on it was plain sailing since Through the wind and the hail we battled (it seems that we play better playing against the wind the sense of belief was palpable. Dele latched onto a through ball and neatly took it round the keeper (rather than shooting first time) and then slotted it into an open net. His second was almost a repeat of our first goal. Matt crossed from the right and Dele headed the ball down low into the bottom corner. The keeper got a hand to it but the ball went into the net. The second half was in some ways an anticlimax. They battled but never really looked like scoring. Dele took a penalty, for a foul on Nick (what were you doing in their box, were you lost Nick???) hoping to get his hat trick but the keeper saved it. Matt netted well from a scrambled corner, a well deserved goal from probably our best player on the day. All in all a good day at the office, now we need to focus on the next few weeks and beating some of the teams who are above us so that we can reclaim second spot. 11 TAWA BULLDOGS VS WAINUI May 28 vs Wainuiomata, HT 1-5, FT 4-8. What a nightmare not a lot went right last weekend. Once again the weather was awful during the week and, as we were scheduled to play the late game on Onepoto 1, I was worried that the conditions were going to have a huge effect on the match. As it turned out that was the least of our worries. I knew both fullbacks were unavailable for the next two weeks so it took a bit of reshuffling and recruiting to get together a full team with subs on Friday night. However, by midday Saturday we were back down to 10 players and I was forced to scramble to find players. Fortunately, Luke Boyadjian was able to find a couple of players to come along so we had enough, although Luke himself had been called onto the bench for the 2nd team and would be running late for our game. I knew both fullbacks were unavailable for the next two weeks so it took a bit of reshuffling and recruiting to get together a full team with subs on Friday night.. Then we arrived at Onepoto and the council hadn t opened the changing rooms four teams were left standing outside to get changed until someone showed up just after 2 pm to unlock them. The earlier match finished at 15 mins before our kickoff, at which point they took down their nets (it was Nth Wgtn s home match) and we were forced to put up our own nets. All-in- all, not the greatest build up for a match. On a positive note, Luke made it in time for kickoff (sort of the referee was kind enough to not look too closely at his watch to begin the match). However, I don t wish to make excuses because we proceeded to play poorly against the 9 th -placed team. We were quickly down 2-0 after barely 5 mins, and it only got worse from there. We looked pretty sharp on attack but defence seemed to be a forgotten concept as we allowed them to play the ball forward with ease, and three individual errors gifted them goals. The halftime break saw us down 5-1, with only a good finish from Luke to show for our endeavours on attack. We had a chat about restarting, ensuring that we stop the supply of ball to their frontline, made a substitution, and away we went. The second half was better. Most concerning was that we played even better when I took myself off let s call it an inspired coaching move. We actually controlled play and brought it back to 5-3, causing some anxiety on the opposition sidelines. Probably should have been even better when JJ was brought down by the last man when clean through on goal, but that only led to a caution. However, sloppy defending again led to late goals and it finished 8-4. I must note that it seems incredible Wainui sit at the bottom of the table, as they were the best organised team we ve met so far. Far too good to be in 9 th. Thanks to Ali and Matthew for coming and helping out, Ali even picking up a goal from a fine cross/shot. Report by: Chris Munro 20 TAWA AFC TAWA AFC 21

13 A.C UNITED VS OLYMPIC "As the game got under way, Olympic tested the defence right across the line, prodding down both flanks trying to poke through the centre, dutifully each attack was seen off.." Div 5 - Wakefield Park A.C. United 1-3 Olympic AFC After having victory snatched from their grasp at the death last week, A.C. United gathered at Wakefield park to take on Olympic AFC. The cloud cover was dark and ominous, and it didn t take long for the rain to start falling. Accompanied by a stiff northerly, this provided some tough playing conditions that lasted through the half. With the absence of Gatkik in the backline and Alex Love up front, this saw the return of defensive powerhouse Jon Barnes, and relief from Tawa AFC stalwart Chris Gibling. This was not the only lineup change bought in by Coach Trimble, returning Joel Chisholm to the right wing, which allowed him to use his vital pace to get in behind the Olympic defence. As the game got under way, Olympic tested the defence right across the line, prodding down both flanks trying to poke through the centre, dutifully each attack was seen off until A.C. were caught on the counter attack. With the centre of the park advancing in unison with the wingers, the defence were out numbered and a the ball was slotted rather sweetly past Slade for the opening goal. Much For A.C. the rekindled rightwing partnership of Chisholm and Jay proved to be working... discussion in the team in recent weeks has been the reaction when a goal has been conceded, and to their credit then boys stuck by one another and got back into their rhythm, which soon paid off The lineup adjustment of moving Chisholm out wide was the success of the valiant reply mounted by A.C. Using his flash like pace he made his way around his marker and set his sights on the open space in behind the line. With the central defender steaming across to stop the advance, Chisholm timed his cross to perfection where he found Jason Barkle who slotted the ball in the back of the net to level the scores. Similar discussion has also been had in response to scoring a goal, and through until the end of the first half the boys fought for every ball, creating a couple of chances and quelling any attack from the opposition. Half time came with the scores locked at 1-1. The second half started as the first finished, with A.C. applying the pressure. With the weather calming down somewhat, both teams attacked and defended, creating chances which were constantly denied by each keeper. For A.C. the rekindled rightwing partnership of Chisholm and Jay proved to be working, with Jay overlapping and making a few runs down the wing, not only crossing the ball but on one occasion following the cross into the middle where he found himself with the ball at his feet on the top of the box, unfortunately, being off balance meant the shot went wide of the mark. The closest chance A.C. had of the second half was when Turfrey was played through on goal by his strike partner Barkle, only to be denied a brave keeper. At the other end, Olympic managed to go one better on two separate occasions putting a further two goals passed Slade who, rightfully was none too amused, letting his feelings known, with blunt factual statement to yours truly about the sloppy defence and lazy running. Sticking true to the A.C. way, he refrained from using any expletives. As always the boys played through till the bitter end, and when the referee blew for full time the score read 3-1 to Olympic. Though a loss is never the desired outcome, the boys can take heart from the comments received from the opposition, where the team were praised for their positive spirit and play. Next week the boys travel down the road to Alex Moore to face North Wellington. Looking to build on the positive from this week and the return of Gatkik and Love, A.C.
