1 May 2014 Tiger Rag Winter Edition #1 Welcome to the first winter or soccer season edition of the Tiger Rag. Thanks to those teams who have submitted game updates. In addition, there have been a number of things happening at your club that we wanted to tell you about. We hope you enjoy! Jason Gapps President on behalf of the Executive On the Anzac Day weekend, these 2 blokes on the left (Rod Wardle & Mark Vallone) + Geoff Mellon, James Gapps (U 13s player) see below - + Sonya & Steve Simpson & Steve Smith spent several hours with buckets & the Super Soper getting water off Nesbitt so that games could be played on Sat & Sun what a bunch of Champions!!

2 Team Results: U 6 Lions: 12 April No scoring in U6s but lots of goals and lots of fun First game of the season and first competition game for the Lions (6/6) up against a young and enthusiastic New Lambton team. Jay bagged the first goal of the year for the Lions, goals followed for Cooper M, Matthew and Nate after several near misses. Defence was excellent with Ben and Cooper H stopping the opposition in their tracks whilst Matthew pulled out the slide tackle on a number of occasions. U 6 Lions: 26 April: Goals aplenty First home game of the season and the Lions (6/6) brought their A game to a wet Nesbit Oval to take on the young Minmi side. Once again Jay was on the scoreboard first before sharing the spoils with Matthew, Nate and Cooper M. Then with the clock winding down, Ben took the ball off the opposition, faked left, went right, hesitated, then powered home his first goal of the season to rapturous applause from the vocal crowd. Cooper H got more involved this week and is reaping the reward of the hard work on the training track. U 7 Pumas: 12 April: Great start to the season against Wallsend. Wallsend were too good but we were able to score some goals. Callan Faulds scoring 1 and John-Lucas Bell scoring 1 from 1/4 way out. profits back into the club. U 7 Pumas: 26 April: Novocastrian Park New Lambton Excellent second round with some new starters this year scoring goals. The team got their mojo in the second half scoring 6 goals, 3 to Callan Faulds, 2 to Kynon Holmes and outstanding footwork from Harvey Walsh to score the last goal right in front. Great attacking by Levi Gay and defence by Michael Ristevski and Thomas Wilson. Team Effort. U 7 Leopards: 3 May: Kotara Leopards were met with chilly conditions this morning for their match up with Newcastle Grammar at Nesbitt Park. The whistle blew at 9:20am and despite the cold weather the team started well. They all worked hard on the field and cohesively as a team. They showed good defensive skills only letting 2 goals past. They chased the ball well and pulled off some tricky kicks. Some excellent goals were scored by Alex, Curtis, Jeremiah and Lawson - bringing the end score to 7-2. It was an enjoyable game against Grammar and Kotara Leopards were pleased with their efforts and their first win of the season. U 7 Leopards: 10 May: It was a lovely sunny day yesterday for Kotara Leopards match-up with New Lambton at Novocastrian Park. The Leopards got off to a great start with an early goal by Lawson. Alex and Jack showed good defense putting their bodies on the line more than once. Luke, Curtis and Jeremiah showed some great dribbling skills and Aidan chased well. It was a good game against New Lambton, who came away with a well-deserved win. U 8 Pumas: 26 April:

3 Score 5-1 towards Mayfield Mayfield started out strong leading in the first half. Kotara's players Tristan Dyson and Jasper Hayward were the most consistent throughout the game helping to keep the score low. William Lyons was the most improved player on the day with a special mention to the "Girl Power Goalies" Maya Agostina - Morrow and Bonita Kypri. Brady Faulds scored Kotara's goal and was named Man of the Match U 9 Leopards: 3 May: This week s Captain Jye Lawless, led the enthusiastic Leopards against a well organised and drilled Nelson Bay team. The Leopards played a fantastic game trying out different positions on the field showing their skills in attack and defence. The Leopards displayed an improvement in their positional play and created at least five scoring chances. Thomas Kelly and Lucy Spencer shared goal keeping duties, showing Coach Dan Lawless their willingness to have a go, trying their hardest and having a great time. Ryan Coates and Drayk Harris often shut down some promising Nelson Bay attacks. Taren Unicomb, Flynn Thompson and Rohan Marsh led many attacks, nearing the goal with ever closer shots U 12 (2) 12 April: Kotara South 4 - Warners Bay 0 Our first game of the season was at home against Warners Bay. We started strongly and quick goals to Angus and William had us in front 2-0 in the first 10 minutes. The remainder of the first half was tougher and the score remained 2-0 at half time. The second half saw us score another two goals, another to William and one to Jackson. The team played well for its first serious game for the year, all players played well - special mentions go to Luca and Billy defended well, Nick who was always threatening up front, William and Harry in the mid-field and Harry and Will were great in goals. U 12 (2) 26 April: Kotara South 4 - Seaham Bothorne 2 Our second game saw us make the long trip away to play Seaham. We started really well again and scored two early goals - one to Max and the other to William. Seaham put plenty of pressure on our defense and fought back to make it 2-1 at half time. Seaham then scored the next goal to make it 2-2 and scores stayed locked together until the last 10 minutes. Andrew did a great through ball that resulted in another goal to William and in the last few minutes Tim scored a great goal from a wide angle. All our players were great - special mention to William, Harry and Ben who were always busy in the middle, Luca again was great in defence and our goal keepers, Heath and Will, did a great job to restrict Seaham to two goals. U 12 (2) 3 May: Kotara South 17 - Singleton 0 Singleton made the long trip to Kotara South in the cold... all our players played well resulting in a big victory. Our goal scorers were Nick, Harry, Ben, Heath, Jackson, Angus, Max, William, Tim, Callum, Luca, Will. Special mention goes to Nick who got a hat-trick, Billy & Andrew who helped out all round the field and our goal keepers Harry and Will. U 12 (2) 10 May: Kotara South 0 - Edgeworth 0 A tough game against Edgeworth finished in a 0-0 draw. We dominated the first 15 minutes and had plenty of scoring opportunities, but failed to turn any of these into goals. The remainder of the game though was a very tight and tough match which in the end only left us with 11 healthy players. Our best players came from our defense with Callan & Luca having great games. In the mid-field Jackson, Will, Harry and Ben were good in attack and defence. Our goal keepers, Will and Harry did very well to keep Edgeworth scoreless.

4 U 13 (1): 12 April: Kotara South 2 South Wallsend 1 Solid start by the boys, in warm conditions & with just the 11 players due to school holidays. Gappsy opened the scoring with a good strike, & Thomas Moore rewarded us from his new position in the mids with the 2 nd goal. Noah ran all game, with his skills on the improve every match. Jake was, as usual, a rock at the back & Sam did a great job for us in goals. 3 points: Thomas, 2 = James Gapps, 1 = Noah U 13 (1): 26 April: Kotara South 6 Toronto 0 The team really clicked in our 1 st home game. Zac responded to the coaches request to back his big right boot with 2 cracking long range goals. Brandon got on the score sheet for the 1 st time with his new team, & Brayden also played strongly in his first game at home since coming to us from Magic. Oscar was a rock in defence consistent as per usual. Josh Mamic caused havoc for the Toronto backs whenever he had the ball & was rewarded with 1 goal. Thomas got on the score sheet again, as did James Crosland. 3 points: Zac, 2 = Josh 1 = Sam U 13 (1): 3 May: Kotara South 2 Singleton 0 Tough conditions for our 1 st long Road trip to Singleton. Cold, windy & a pitch that was covered in thick & spongy grass your passes will need to be firm today, boys! James Crosland had a fantastic game, bagging both of our goals, whilst between the sticks Ethan put himself in the road of a number of good strikes from the Singleton attack. James Stevens was brilliant in defence he turned up wherever we needed him time & again. Stassi ran all game & with the other backs in the 2 nd half, shut Singleton down consistently. Harry connected the back & the forwards well through the middle & seems to have found himself another position he excels at in the mids. We hung on for a vital away win well done lads! 3 points: James Crosland, 2 = Ethan, 1 = Jamie Stevens U 18C s: The U18C s are a newly formed team at KSFC, and have performed well in their opening games with 2 wins, a draw and a loss. The boys are all enjoying their football and a solid start to the season by Adam R, Tom, Braye and Patrick Early Leader Board The Club s Player of the Year (Competition Teams) is selected from the aggregate points (3-2-1) from each round. See the reminder sent in the week beginning 4 May, or go to 2. Training: please ensure that you check the Council s wet weather line in the case of persistent wet weather. This number is If our grounds (Nesbit, Lugar, Kotara Park) are noted as closed, please do not train on them. If they are closed, have you thought about an indoor session? The kids love it! Try Howzat ( ) or Charlestown Indoor ( ) bookings recommended. Cost is approx $6-$8 per child depending on the number of attendees coaches should not pay for this themselves parents are generally happy to pay to see the kids get a run for an hour. 3. Registration for Volunteers (Coaches & Managers) please see the letter from NNSW Football on our website ( this is an important safeguard for you personally and for the club, in the case of injury whilst acting as a volunteer at our club, from an insurance perspective. Note: this is different from the WWC registration above. Coaching Clinics in 2014 Thanks to Jason Holt, Rod Wardle & a number of the other senior members of our club who have helped out in a range of Clinics (including the 1st dedicated Goal Keepers sessions we have run at Kotara) this season. I encourage you to continue to support these initiatives they are an important investment in both the kids development as well as in assisting our coaches to learn more about the role they play as a Coach. There are 2 further coaching clinics to be held in the coming weeks: Goalkeeper clinic for U9 U18 boys and girls at Nesbitt Park between 5-6pm on Wednesday 21/05/14; and Coaches clinic for all age groups at Nesbitt Park between am on Sunday 25/05/14. Check the website for more details. Volunteers Thanks! A big Thank you to all who have volunteered for the various roles required to get grounds set up, games running smoothly, barbecues cooking, the canteen operating etc so far this season. The ground looks a treat first thing on a Saturday morning, with new goal posts, grounds set out & the waft of an egg n bacon roll drifting out from the BBQ Great work by all thank you! A roster is in place for the smooth running of these roles for the season please ensure you refer to it. It s posted on our website.

6 Acknowledging a Club Legend: Barry Bourke Barry Bourke, our current Assistant Secretary, has held various roles with the Club & this year celebrates 20 years of association with KSFC. Sadly (for us perhaps not for his wife Lyn!) Barry announced at our May monthly meeting that this year will be his last. We asked Jason Holt, who has spent a good number of those years alongside Barry at the Club, for a few of his fondest recollections of Barry s enormous contribution to the club: Life member Barry Bourke has given 20 solid years of service to KSFC and has fulfilled a variety of committee, coaching and administration roles during this time. Barry has worked diligently towards helping our Club to become well respected and admired by the local soccer community, and he is responsible for many great initiatives that have resulted in children s enjoyment and ongoing participation in the game. On behalf of the Club and many friends that he s made over the years, I d like to congratulate and thank Barry for his contribution, and wish him and his wife Lyn well for their post football activities. Stay tuned for the details on how we will recognise & thank Barry for his efforts. Pink Sports Day Well done to all involved in our fundraising day last Sunday, Mother's Day. We raised $ for Breast Cancer Research. What a fantastic effort!! A very special thank you to Linda Stavrevski for such wonderful organising and being the driving force behind the day. Thank you to others for donating time to man BBQ and for donating food and drinks to the day. What a wonderful community we live in! Next year we plan to have Pink Socks organised for the girls to play in.
