1 Ignatian Sports Reports Term: 3 Week: 2 Boys Sport Sport Team Coach Opposition W/L Comments Basketball Senior 3 Matthew Popp St Peter s SIC 49 def. St Peter s 17 The boys continue to play very good basketball throughout the season. Their knowledge of the game is improving and this is showcased in the way they approached this game. Everyone contributed to different facets of the game, whether it was rebounding, help defence, or scoring. Very well done. Best players: Lukas Gawkowski, Luke Quadros, Joe Herrera Basketball Middle A Courtney Rossi Gleeson SIC 65 def. Gleeson 3 The boys were on fire against Gleeson this week, showing that they are prepared for next week s finals. Gleeson had an undermanned squad and so, in true Ignatius spirit, we interchanged some of our players to their team to give them some rest. Despite this, our boys played very well showing supreme skill and ability to defeat their opponents. Best players: Liam Hennig, Sean Stock, David Rinaldi Basketball Middle B Eliza Howland Gleeson SIC 10 def. by Gleeson 23 A tired and scrappy start to the match saw us start off on the wrong foot and we took some time to settle into the game. We had many shot opportunities throughout the four quarters but unfortunately they just wouldn t drop for us. Our passes and movement really let us down but we woke up and finished the game strong scoring a few late goals. Ethan played a great game at both ends of the court, rebounding and driving to the ring. Thank you to all the boys and families for a great season of basketball! Best player(s): Ethan Wright Basketball Middle C Andrew Dodson Gleeson Forfeit Unfortunately, for the last game of the season the opposition was a no show. Consequently, we organised a scratch match and the boys played some really good basketball. The blue team defeated the red team. My thanks to all the players for their dedication this season and to the parents and guardians who supported the boys each week. Often playing against teams who were much bigger and older, the boys never dropped their heads, always playing

2 Football Second XVIII Mr Hauschild St Michael s SIC def. by STMC Football First XVIII Justin Scanlon St Michael s SIC def. by STMC with intensity until the final siren. A most enjoyable season, even when the score board wasn t in our favour. St Michael s were a skilled and physically strong team. Whilst we competed well in the first quarter were unable to maintain that throughout the remainder of the game. Players were getting frustrated and as a team we will need to ensure we maintain a high standard of discipline, and always communicate with each other in a productive way. Our skills were OK and players in new positions are progressing nicely and the team structure is improving, which is a positive to take out of this game. Best Players: Raimondo, Alexander, Valiff, Robinson, Tudini, Parletta We started well and had 4 goals on the board in the first quarter. Our ball movement was slick and our run off the halfback line was the best it s been all year. The last 3 qtrs were disappointing and we had very few winners around the ground, the midfield was soundly beaten all day and our backline were under constant pressure because of it. I accept all teams we play are physically bigger and stronger and we find it hard to maintain that pressure around the ball but we have had enough glimpses in short bursts of what we are capable of and it s our goal to play better for longer. Best: Griffin, Schell, Suen, N. Adams, Gilbert, Swan. Football Year 10 Mr Ziesing Pembroke SIC def. by Pembroke Football Year 9 Peter Hogan Mercedes SIC def. Mercedes Goals: Griffin 1 Stevens 1 Wagner 1 Taylor 1 Whilst acknowledging that most players are very down on confidence and that this season has been extremely challenging, it was made obvious yesterday that this does not stop some players from continuing to work hard. Unfortunately, too few are prepared to put this level of application in. Jordan Ferraro was a clear standout on Saturday simply because he did not let the game, or the season, affect his determination and desire to perform the best he can. If other members of the team brought this same attitude, we would not be being humiliated as we have. There are two more games for us to turn this around no more excuses, just stronger desire. Best Players: Ferraro, Kimber, Nayda Goals: Mayo 1 The much anticipated Intercol saw us take on Mercedes in fine but windy conditions. Igs got away to a good start, kicking 3.5 to o in the first qtr. Xave Zollo, Noah Leydon and Captain Davies showing the way with run and skill. The second qtr was equally as dominant as McDonald, Alexander and Bradly began to assert themselves. As well, our defence led by Hodges and Centenara was very solid, driving the ball forward again and again. Leydon was

3 Soccer First XI Mr Stenta Adelaide High SIC 2 def. by Adelaide High 3 exemplary in his run and attack on the ball, ably supported by Whitford, Spicer and young guns, Britten-Jones and Holt. The second half was a tough tussle, with lots of heavy contact and some frayed tempers but the team held its nerve to come away with a decisive victory. Goals: Hogan 3; Leydon 3;Whitford 2; Holt 2;Lyall 1; Black 1; Nickels 1 Best Players: Leydon; McDonald; Davies T; Whitford; Centenara; Zollo; Britten-Jones A game of two halves; we were quite poor I the first half. Far too reactive and passive in our play, we were caught on the break and punished for some sloppy defending. Only poor finishing from the opposition saved us from going into the break more than 0-1 down. In the first 10 minutes of the second half we again failed to make an impact and more defensive errors cost us two quick goals. To the boys credit though, we mounted a magnificent fight back at 0-3 down with 30 minutes to go. A nice attacking movement finished off by James Dello Iacono before captain Anthony D Onofrio pulled another goal back via the penalty spot. Despite piling on the pressure in a tense finish, we were unable to find the equaliser. Hopefully an important lesson on playing a full 90 minutes is learnt by the boys who get another chance to against the same opposition in next week s playoff. Best Players: James Dello-Iacono, Massimo Caporaso, Liam Matkovic Goals James Dello Iacono, Anthony D Onofrio Soccer Third XI Mathew Sodano Soccer Middle A1 Michael Lanzilli St Peter s Trinity SIC 1 def. by St Peter s 2 SIC 2 def. by Trinity 3 By far the most heartbreaking result of the season for us. After a poor first 10 minutes, the boys put in a great effort however couldn't impact the scoreboard hence we went into half time at 0-0. An exquisite through ball from Leo put Khai through on goal and he converted beautifully. Then the unthinkable happened and we gave away two absolutely silly penalties which were due to lazy defending and there was no doubt that they were penalties. Sam Dodson was having an awesome game for an outfield player playing in goals but there was absolutely nothing that he could have done as both penalties were taken clinically. A late shot from Khai was denied by the post and we were left with another loss. Couldn't have been prouder with the performance as we continue to work towards intercol. Goals: K. Dinh Best: K. Dinh, L. James, J. Rodi, S. Beltrame, S. Dodson. An unfortunate defeat after the away trip to Trinity. We started with 9 on the field as we were down due to injuries and such. Trinity thankfully decided to only start with 9 too in a great show of sportsmanship. We went into the break at 1-1 and were roaring to come out second half and win the game. Unfortunately it wasn't meant to be but all the boys that played should be really proud as they played valiantly and with heart.

4 Best players: Joshua, Stefan, Isaiah Soccer Middle B1 Tim Otten St Michael s SIC 6 def. STMC 1 Another convincing performance from the Middle B s this week. Despite a slow start to the match, the boys managed to make their presence felt through some excellent passing, creativity and shots on target. Solid defending was key in the first half of the game as St. Michael s easily could have had two or three goals before the halftime whistle. This spurred on the boys in midfield and attack to make an impact to relieve the pressure when defending. Overall, an impressive game, looking to build on this confidence for next week. Soccer Middle B3 Josh Koutsouridis Trinity SIC 0 def. by Trinity 3 Best: Issac Martini, Josh Scarpantoni, Tony Bianco, Issac Khan With only 10 men on the field this game, the team was put to the test. Unfortunately, unable to pull through. The game stood at 0-1 for most of the match until the last ten minutes where a disallowed goal for Ignatius turned into conceding another 2 goals in the last 5minutes. Overall, the boys played well and it was unfortunate that we couldn t even the game out for a tie, where it was possible to win. Hopefully the team learns that just because things didn t go our way it doesn t mean we can allow the opposition to score more past us. The undefeated streak is over, though I hope to pick up more wins before the season ends. Soccer Primary A1 Paul Gadaleta PAC SIC 2 def. by PAC 5 Very shaky start with an injured Goal keeper, Ashton arrived with injury but had great heart to player and attend. With a very damaged pitch our team again played thru the midfield meeting the opposition head on and had a very messy time playing out. With some simple play using the side players Ignatius had 2 easy opportunities to score, but could capitalize. From this point the team lost some of its fight and PAC scored 2 goals in the first half. Second half was similar to the first being very messy and unstructured, Joseph from outside the box scored 2 lovely shots over the goalie, but PAC responded through some of our defensive mistakes and scored 3 goals. A disappointing game overall but always looking forward to the next game. Girls Sport Sport Team Coach Opposition W/L Comments

Krysral showed really good fight against her opponent but I think the cold struck them the most. Again, improvement of communication in doubles where they inform each other of who is to return the shot etc. Singles needs more work with positioning themselves but overall improvement from all students Saturday was yet another convincing win for the team. However, most importantly, every player showed improvement. Special mention to Sara Sha, who s extra badminton practice was noticeable through her increased consistency. Credit should also go to Kritika Garg, who recognised her opponent s strategy early on and used it to secure a convincing win. Overall, a solid win and an impressive performance from the team. Best player Erin Goh. Another tough loss this week. 2nd week in a row now we've tied in matches except lost in games and points. Whilst the girls played well, looking strong in our singles securing most of those games we lacked a little during the doubles games. Unfortunately in the end, we lost points where we really shouldn't have but thankfully this does mean that this can easily be improved upon in the near future; polishing the skills that are already present. A highly enjoyable match, coming down to games to decide the winner, but an excellent performance from all the girls A disappointing loss. We started slowly against a tall team and found ourselves down by 7 at quarter time. However, we fought back and halfway through the 3rd quarter and closed within a goal. Unfortunately we then dropped our intensity and didn't value the ball enough, eventually going down by 14. We continue to play patches of excellent netball but are unable to sustain it. Phoebe was excellent at WD all game, while Charlotte shot very well.

MMC 16 Coming back from the extended back the girls looked ready to go, especially after securing our first win of the season against SIC B3 at training earlier in the week. However, unfortunately it was our inability to capitalise on our turnover ball which let us down this week. Our defence unit worked incredibly well all game with Jenna playing her best game of the season in GK, providing numerous rebounds. Additionally, Emily Washer also had a great game applying plenty of pressure and taking a number of intercepts. With plenty of things learnt throughout the game, we look forward to improving next week. Heading into today s game as the underdogs, the girls knew they had to pull together a full 40 minute performance. Crazy enough, today s results was a do-over of the previous game against Nazareth 3. However, this time the odds were in our favour. The girls got around each other and Ignatius lead at quarter time by 1, setting us up nicely for a 1 goal win. Overall the team should be thrilled with their performance. The final score does not reflect the significant improvement the girls have shown over the season. This week at training, we focused on increasing our defensive pressure by working on 'turning and blocking' of the shooters within the goal circle. The technique proved to be extremely useful during the game on Saturday as the circle defenders - Liv L, Molly and Juliet - were able to intercept the majority of the rebounds, despite being up against much taller shooters. We also able to slow down the opposition's momentum and made it more difficult for them to pass the ball down the court with Deanna and Molly acting as fantastic back-up options and intercepting the ball. Lucy, Trishna and Yasmin, proved to be strong in attack when bringing the ball down to our shooters, Liv S and Laura, who both continue to be quick and accurate within the goal circle. Despite the score there was quite an even match up today and the girls played really well. The first quarter our passing was off and that allowed the opposition to get a solid lead however the rest of the game was relatively even. There was good talk on court and along with strong leads allowed us to transition from defence to attack fluently. The score doesn t reflect the game today and I was happy with our overall effort. Ignatius has a victorious win over Mercedes with a heart stopping last quarter resulting in a one goal win over the opponent. The girls really stepped up this week and truly demonstrated some great netball. The girls listened to feedback and remained determined to win, which was very evident in the last quarter. Special mention goes to Joanna whose defence was stronger than ever! The girls should be very proud of themselves!! We came out firing with a strong first quarter, with Alex leading the way displaying some sensational drives and feeding. Tahlia dominated the goal ring the entire game and maintained composure despite a tough opponent. Jordan Antonia Jess and Hanna defended

Our second half wasn t as great but we held on for the win. Well done girls. A very tough game today playing a solid team that barely missed a shot all game. Passing was off and let us down throughout the game. Leading was also a struggle with the opposition being very strong defensively. The girls however never gave up and put in effort for all four quarters which was great to see! The 7B3 team were able to come away with a narrow win against Mary Mackillop on the weekend. They started the game off very well, gaining a comfortable lead at quarter time. However, they spent the rest of the game playing catch up, through a consistent routine of losing possession in the goal circle. Fortunately our defensive efforts were outstanding and we were able to keep sending the ball back down to our goal third hoping to capitalize on the opportunity. It was a tense 4th quarter that required the girls to dig deep and fight hard for the win, which they did. I was very proud of their persistence and composure as it came down to the wire. The girls all played well on Saturday, braving the cold and coming out on top. It was a close game with a lot of back and forth as SAC were a skilled team with lots of tall girls. Our stealers lead well and provided good options on the ring, our defenders did well to mark the tall opposition and the shooters had some great shots. In training we will work on stepping and accurate passing and the shooters will work on splitting at following their shots in. Thank you to the other coaches for covering for me over the last few weeks it is much appreciated Another amazing win! All the girls worked well as a team, especially in offence. Alessia s shooting and passing is exceptional, and she also showed great leadership by encouraging her teammates. Lily is a strong shooter with a good eye and stance. She is able to hold her position and find space when necessary. Steph is a talented defender and intercepts majority of the passes. Her defensive skills allow the team to maintain a strong lead. Well done everyone, brilliant game. An unfortunate loss today against the other ignatius game, after a hard fought game. The girls played well and contested every ball but struggled in getting in front of the opposition to make each pass count and move the ball down the court. Bad luck girls but well done on your hard work. A really close game this week, but the girls were able to pull another win out of their pockets. Amelie played brilliantly in an unfamiliar position, and with the help of Lia, the two of them were able to defend the shooters in the goal ring. Freya continuously brought the

8 Netball Year 7 C7 Loreto 3 SIC 9 def. by Loreto 19 ball down the court, which evidently helped with our final score. We still need to work on leading and our spacing, as well as using our loud voices to call for the ball. The final score doesn't reflect how well St Ignatius played for much of the game. St Ignatius' intensity was fantastic, with everyone taking responsibility for chasing down loose balls and making the opposition work hard to get and keep possession. Emma Nankivell When in possession, St Ignatius demonstrated a growing understanding and flow as a team. There were some really lovely passages of play that were characterised by smart movement, patience with the ball and excellent passing. Soccer Senior A Izzy Czechovicz Kildare 1 SIC 4 def. Kildare 0 The girls should be very proud of their teamwork and fantastic attitude. We're looking forward to finishing off the season strongly After lasts weeks disappointing loss, the girls knew they had to pick up their intensity, take on what was said in training and work well together as a team to snatch the game up with a win which is exactly what they did. It was great to see the girls working well on and off the ball. Their passing was excellent and their movement into free space was fantastic. Our strong defence line managed to hold off Kildares forward line from breaking through the entire game. Although the girls had multiple scoring opportunities, the forward line was very unselfish and choose to pass the ball off to others who hadn t yet had a chance on goals. Hopefully the girls will be able keep up their excellent skills which will allow them to pull off another win next week. Best players: Olivia, Maddy Soccer Senior B Olivia Bradley Kildare 2 SIC 7 def. Kildare 0 Soccer Junior B Sarah Francesca St Dominic s 1 SIC 1 def. SDPC 0 Today was another excellent team display, continuing on from the success of last week. It was excellent to see passing and movement of the ball all along the wings, leading to excellent opportunities up forward. Great games from Mara, Steph and Nat in midfield, along with Gemma in goals all game. The defence was also airtight, with great games from Olivia again and Claudia. I was also very proud of the girls for their displays of sportsmanship, especially when playing with the mercy rule. A great win girls! Goals: Mia 4, Lara 1, Natalie 2 Beginning of the game the girls struggled to create space and opportunities for a goal, and the ball possession was very even for the first half and didn't see any break. However, in the second half the girls really improved with their passing and through balls and saw them one up. With that confidence boost of the goal the girls all really stepped up their efforts and

9 continued with opportunities for shots on goal. Great game for the girls, first win of the season. Special thanks to those girls who filled in the match. Despite it being a cold start to a Saturday morning, the girls played one of the best games they have this season. They managed to work together as a team and in saying that be the loudest group of girls on that pitch which in that gave them the opportunity and drive to score their first two goals for the season. The back line remained strong, talkative and tenacious the entire game barely letting the ball inside the goal square. Our midfield was fantastic in falling back and helping defend our goals as well as passing the ball up the field to help create plays in order to give the forwards better opportunities to have shots on goals. The forwards worked hard for the ball the entire game making sure to talk to eachother and continuously read the ball. The girls should be very proud of themselves as they did not lose focus or enthusiasm the entire game. Everybody was able to contribute to this win, with our defence and midfield linking up and feeding some great passes through to our forward line. As seen by our many goal scorers, the team played a highly skilled and competitive game. Goal scorers: Olli (3), Carl (2), Ella, Will and Willow. Hockey Junior A3 Lucy Roberts Concordia SIC 0 def. by Concordia 3 The final score was recorded at 3-0, Concordia s way, however don t be fooled, the young Ignatians played some hockey that will be remembered for years to come. Not a single goal was conceded in the second half of the match and it is my belief that we not only drew the second half, but we won the second half. Improved communication and ball movement through the middle helped us take control of the game and dominate the second half. Our defenders can be credited to flipping the table on Concordia with strong leadership from James D Agostino and Toby Woods who remained strong in full back and put pressure on

10 every Concordia player within a 100 metre radius. Special mention also goes to Tom McGuire who made more than one amazing save in his very first time goalkeeping, a true natural of the position. And a very special mention goes to Carl Hodges and Oliver Carr who played an extra game after their A1s match to help us out. The St Peter s side were ultimately no challenge to our superior Ignatius boys, who dismantled the opposition both swiftly and effectively. Ben Melville continued to demonstrate his exceptional skills and defeated his opponent in style. Seb Ricci also continued to play his best squash against an apparently weaker opponent, ending the match by taking all three games. Max Lyall played efficiently and effortlessly won his game in little time. Chip Jones consolidated a strong performance by the other boys, also winning all three games in his match. We unfortunately got off to a poor start as we needed to forfeit a game due to a last minute cancelation early Friday morning, meaning that a replacement could not be found. Ryan Murphy played in first this week against a really tough opponent, he dropped the first set but came back fighting to win the second set with a very powerful fist pump. Ryan got a little unlucky in the last game with his opponent pulling off some incredible shots, ending off his game down two games to one. Isaiah Greco, in second, played spectacularly wrapping up his match in no time, winning all three games. Finally it came down to Oscar Popping, in third, needing to win all three games to bring the team to victory. Unfortunately this wasn't the case, after winning the first game all of our hopes were high but his opponent managed a scrap by a victory If we had a full team this week, we would have come out victorious, so please remember to notify teachers in advance if you will be absent. St Peter's was unfortunately down a player, giving them a hard disadvantage to overcome, but the games that were played were good to watch. A standout game was Hugo Porter's closely fought loss against Kevin He, with some good rallies and a closely contested final game. Ignatius White pulled off a very strong win against Saint Peter's, winning all 4 rubbers of the match. This strong result hides a relatively close score line within each game, with the St Peter's players fighting hard and playing some good squash. A highlight was Samuel Vlachoulis' game, winning 2 games to 1 with a score line of 43 to 38. A tough day at the office for the team against a classy PAC outfit, but there were plenty of positives to come away with. Tony Bianco matched it with one of the best number 1s in the comp for much of the game, but unfortunately couldn t come away with the victory. Will O Callaghan faced a tough assignment at 2 and showed promise in the matchup, sadly also coming away empty handed. Charlie Slee had an entertaining encounter, claiming the first before being narrowly squeezed out in the last two games. Piper Billing again played with spirit, but was unable to claim victory. A good performance overall given our inexperience and the quality of the opposition, but we ll be looking to get back on the winning side this week.
