All members are invited to attend. On the Cover: 2014 C7 Indy 500 Pace car from above. Tiny back windows compared to the C5/C6! But I love the color. The Corvetter Volume 65 Issue 6 The Corvetter, the official newsletter of the Corvette Club of Texas (CCT), is published monthly by The Corvette Club of Texas P.O. All submissions become intellectual property of The Corvetter. From the Editor I bit the bullet and got the new tires for my Grand Sport that I talked about last month. One tip: Don t take the first number you get! I went to Discount Tires and got a quote on the three choices: Bridgestone, Michelin and Goodyear. Then went to the Goodyear dealer and got the same three quotes. Goodyear was $600 to $800 over Discount s bid... Until I told Goodyear about Discount s prices and, suddenly, Goodyear rebid at $100 to $200 under Discount. We have a pretty good relationship with our local Goodyear dealer so I went with them even though I probably could have shaved a few more $$$ by going back to Discount. So what did I get? Going against all advice from the Corvette Forum, I decided to stick with Goodyear, but with the Eagle Supercar F1 Gen 2 tires. (OEM was the Eagle Gen 1, which were pretty bad.) Price? A wallet busting $2008 for everything including a much needed alignment. So far, after about 500 miles, I am impressed. They are quiet (although all new tires are quieter than the old tires just removed) and they don t follow the ruts and expansion joints on the road, unlike the Gen 1s. I haven t driven them in the rain yet but rumor is that they are better when compared to the Gen 1s, but of course not great. And they do have a unique and very aggressive asymmetrical tread pattern which appealed to my macho side... And I m sure he would have invited all of us to the Fourth of July Parade (see flyer). 4 CORVETTE CLUB OF TEXAS, INC. JUNE 21, 2013, MEMBERSHIP MEETING FRIENDLY CHEVROLET, STEMMONS FREEWAY, DALLAS The meeting was called to order at 7:30 PM by president Bob Kee. The May minutes were approved as published in the newsletter. Jim Ieule, the treasurer, gave the treasurer s report and gave the secretary a copy for the records. Paul Wolter: Discussed the autocross at Mineral Wells Airport, June 1 and 2 in conjunction with Cowtown Vettes. Attendance for both days of racing was good. This could be attributed to the decision to have all entrants send their registration forms to one location. We had 32 or 33 racers for each day. We had 11 racers from CCT and 16 from Cowtown. Saturday, June 29, there is a Dream Cruise in Frisco. Entry fee is $20. Friendly will have a tent there. July 4th parade will be held at the same place as last year and everyone can go to eat after the parade. Paul will send out an with the details because he cannot be at the event.. Four cars are going to the NCCC convention and are leaving early tomorrow morning. Bob Mischel thanked everyone that showed up at the autocross to work and race. Mary thanked everyone for bringing goodies for the soldiers. No change in the membership this month. The blanket project might start up again in August. We have new CCT baseball hats available for $10. Ken Bradley discussed his meeting with Mark Eddins, Friendly s owner. Mark was receptive to having a car show in conjunction with the announcement of the new Corvette in October. This will be held at Friendly and he plans to have food and drinks for the car show. Also, Doug Mabe is back as our Friendly rep so see him if you need any kind of Chevrolet product. Also, come out Saturday, June 29, to the Dream Cruise in Frisco and show your car. Gene Whitaker conducted the raffle and Charles took pictures for the newsletter. The meeting adjourned at 8:20 PM and everyone was invited to dinner at Texas Land and Cattle arranged by Bob & Paula Mischel. Respectfully submitted, Jeanette Bradley, secretary Part of Jay Leno s garage 4

June 2013 Breakfast By Charles Whitaker The June breakfast of the Corvette Club of Texas was hosted by Sharon Norris. It is conveniently located at the Egg & I in Carrollton, Texas. We had a nice crowd in our private dining room with 19 members of the club attending. As I have said before when we were there, there was a lot of talking going on before we were served our food and it got sort of loud. I hope that we didn t disturb the other people in the restaurant. The Egg & I has been a favorite place for breakfast. I guess that the reason that we go there a lot is partly because it is located far from the road construction work on LBJ in Dallas, 114 in Grapevine and 183 in Euless and Bedford. It is also a place with good food and note that there is plenty of room for more people to attend. 6

June 2013 Meeting & Raffle By Charles Whitaker The regular meeting of the Corvette Club of Texas was held on June 21, 2013 at Friendly Chevrolet. There were 27 or more people at the meeting. Our club president, Bob Kee, conducted the business. The Raffle Lady, Gene Whitaker, collected $46 by selling Raffle tickets and there were 8 raffle winners. Bob drew the first winning raffle ticket. 8 Michael Garrison Richard Kapcsos Louise Kapcsos Letty Grabos Paul Wolter Pat Kimminau Bob & Paula Mischel hosted our after-meeting dinner at the Texas Land & Cattle Co. in Dallas. I know that I had my camera in its bag over my shoulder, but I forgot to take any photographs. I guess that it was because we were having so much fun talking, telling stories and eating. 8

1962 Corvette Project (By Paul Wolter). Having purchased a project 1962 Corvette 12 years ago thinking that I would have had it completely restored at least 6 years ago was positive thinking that got side tracked numerous times by other higher priority projects and Corvette events (like the outstanding CCT Costa Rica trip, interesting NCRS and CCT road trips, car shows, etc.) plus work, family, NASCAR events, charitable volunteering, church, class reunion, etc. Prior to my retirement 3 years ago from Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control as a Weapons System Project Manager the restoration of our 62 Corvette was going to be at the top of my priority list of things to do. After retirement there were many events that moved the Corvette restoration way down (near the bottom) on the list. Plus, about 40 things soon got added to the list, ahead of the Corvette restoration task. And being retired, there is always tomorrow or later that you can start a task. I did small things on the Corvette as time permitted like removing the engine, rebuilding the 4 speed transmission (thanks for the professional assistance from CCT member Ray Kimminau) and other small tasks but I needed to start some serious continuous major work on the Vette. To get me jump started on the Corvette restoration last month I started taking the Auto Restoration class at the South Ft. Worth TCC from 6 to 10 PM nightly. It forces me to work on the car, accomplishes significant progress and puts me on a schedule to regularly work on the car. When I started the class I didn t have the 62 Vette ready to bring to the class so I removed, sanded and painted our yellow 86 Corvette pace front bumper, license filler panel, splitter and one headlight cover. When not in class during the day I worked on removing body mounting bolts, emergency brake cable assembly and steering sector/gearbox to allow the 1962 Corvette body to be separated from the chassis. Our son, Scott, and I lifted the body off the chassis several weeks ago (with the help of our diesel tractor s front end loader). I have transported the chassis to the body shop at TCC and have been scraping the grease and road debris from the chassis with a 1 ½ putty knife in preparation for chassis disassembly and sand blasting. There are 15 students in the class that bring and work on their classic car, truck, etc. The picture above shows the 62 chassis and five of the other projects that are being worked on one side of the body shop. Some of the vehicles are a 54 Porsche bath tub convertible, 65 T-Bird convertible, 914 Porsche, 55 & 57 Chevys, Oldsmobile, 68 Ford P/U, older VW Minbus, several newer Dodge P/Us, Honda Acura, etc. The shop has a professional downdraft paint booth with indirect lighting and you can bake the paint after it s sprayed at 135 degrees for 25 minutes, which accelerates the curing and helps to flow out the new paint. The paint booth floor has a huge filter which keeps the work environment dust free. The large amount of grease, oil, heavy dirt, etc. on the chassis required removal before I can sand blast it. So far I ve spent almost three class nights scraping the frame and suspension to remove most of the heavy grime that would prevent restoring the frame in a like new condition. It s a slow and tedious task, but it s slowly improving the appearance and will make sand blasting a lot easier/faster. The grime on the floor under the frame represents only 2 hours of scraping. I anticipate another two nights of frame scraping, and then I will remove the front suspension, shocks, fuel lines, brake lines and other piece parts. One of the following pictures shows the front LH side prior to scraping and the front RH side after removal of the debris by scraping. 9

Front Left Hand Side Prior to Scraping Front Right Hand Side After Scraping Chevrolet announces special edition of 2014 Corvette Stingray By David Undercoffler LA Times June 28, 2013, 12:18 p.m. The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette isn t even on sale yet, but that hasn t stopped General Motors from announcing a special edition. The automaker Friday debuted the Premiere Edition Corvette Stingray, of which only 500 will be made. The car is essentially a completely loaded Stingray coupe with some unique appearance upgrades and special luggage. The car will have the Corvette s optional performance exhaust system and the Z51 performance package, which includes magnetic ride control, limited-slip differential and additional cooling systems. All Premiere Stingrays will be painted Laguna Blue and will feature a tan suede interior and carbon fiber roof panel. The car will be fitted with a custom luggage set from Thule. Because this version of the new Corvette Stingray comes with the performance exhaust system, it will be rated at 460 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. Last week, Chevrolet announced that this model would do zero-60 mph in 3.8 seconds. Corvettes without the optional exhaust system will have 455 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. All versions announced to date will get that power from a 6.2-liter, direct-injected V-8. Two transmissions will be available: A seven-speed manual transmission with automatic rev-matching, or a six-speed automatic with paddle shifters. Pricing on the Premiere Stingray wasn t announced, though expect to pay in the neighborhood of $75,000. If that s too rich, the base Corvette Stingray Coupe will start at $51,995, including destination. The Corvette Stingray Convertible will add another $5,000. The 2014 Corvette Stingray will hit dealerships later this year. 10

Governors Report Condolences to NCCC Member Steve Surdick. CCT expresses our deepest sympathy to Steve Surdick s spouse, Cheryl, and his family & friends on Steve s unfortunate early departure due to a heart attack the first week in June in Oklahoma City. Steve had a goal of attending this year s convention in Bowling Green with Cheryl. We will all certainly miss Steve CCT Autocross Event. Our annual CCT & CTV autocross event was successfully conducted on June 1st and 2nd at the Mineral Wells airport. CCT had 32 racers this year (as compared to 25 last year), which is up 25% from what we had in 2012 when we hosted it at Mineral Wells. CTV hosted 7 NCCC autocrosses on Saturday for 33 racers, and we hosted our 7 NCCC CCT autocrosses on Sunday morning. Entrant check-in, race car teching, corner worker and driver s meetings were at the track both mornings beginning at 7:30 AM each day. Mesquite Pit BBQ lunches were served again at the track on Saturday. The weather cooperated, with Saturday being sunny and Sunday was overcast and windy which kept the temperature down to a more comfortable level. Governor Bob Pattillo from the Corvette Motorsports Club of Texas in Old River-Winfree, TX brought his mid-year Grand Sport Replica again with its tublar chassis, which held a powerful LS 7 engine, raced both days There were numerous attention-getter spin outs and several failures which side-lined a couple of racers. I want to thank all the CCT members who came out to work the event again this year. We can only be successful when we have dedicated members who pitch in and help in the various areas. Many thanks to CTV member Candy Beck for being our key timing person again this year, working with CCT timing Darlee Kee, and to CTV for allowing CCT to use their timing system again for our autocrosses. I want to thank our starter, Dennis Bertwell, who working with staging coordinator Marvin Snyder and timing Candy Beck, quickly staged and released the race cars enabling the CCT autocrosses to be completed at 1:30 PM. We also appreciate the dedicated help from CTV members Doug & Glenda McMahan (CTV governor), Marlene Pattillo (SJCC governor), Jeannie Ruston (SWR Regional Executive) and many of the other racers and spouses who helped with timing posting, setting up the road course during the weekend. Everyone had an enjoyable weekend racing and socializing! NCCC National Information. The NCCC convention in Bowling Green KY was attended last week by our president Bob & Darlee Kee, Paul & Karen Deen, Gilbert Crouch, Keith Amendson and CCT Vice President Sharon Norris. I am sure they all enjoyed a great time participating in the events, tours and socializing during the parties and testing the quality (and quantity) of complementary draft beer and wine! 2013 Competition Schedule.
