3 Volume 51, Issue Number 9 September 2004 Presidents Prerogative. ROUNDUP TIME is just a few short weeks away. We are still in need of volunteers especially corner workers. Please contact Ken or Paul to let him know if you will be volunteering for the event. The flyer will be incorporated into this newsletter so please take the time to read it and invite any friend you know who owns a Vette to participate... Ben Loflin led the Corvettes at the Diamond event to Roundrock the event was well attended by our club. Congratulations to Paul & Mary Wolter for winning the Top Flight award for their 1986 Pace car. On a sad note Jim & Carolyn Adams had to leave their car at the local dealership for repairs after a portable awning went airborne into his windshield. All of the event personnel were more than willing to help Jim in his time of need and thanks goes out to the Longhorn Corvette Club for their support. Thanks to James and Joann Powdrill for hosting the Ice Cream Social August 21 st in their home. We all had a great time and sampled many types of delicious Homemade Ice Cream and Cookies. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Clint and Margaret Brennan. As many of you know Clint is still recovering from open heart surgery. Thanks and as always Save the Wave Joe Carrion

9 CORVETTE CLUB OF TEXAS, INC. AUGUST 20, 2004, MEMBERSHIP MEETING FRIENDLY CHEVROLET, STEMMONS FREEWAY, DALLAS The president, Joe Carrion, brought the meeting to order at 7:30 PM, August 20, The secretary read the Board minutes and they were approved as read. The minutes from the July membership meeting were approved as published with one exception: Mary Wolter said that Paul Deen brought back only the Diacom--the timing lights and lap top computer were left in the club trailer. The treasurer, Mitch Factor, gave the treasurer s report. Also, we have received five entries for the Round Up Autocross so far. Mitch reported he had 20 duplexed copies of the newsletter printed at Office Depot for $30 and they have been mailed to the people who requested them. Mary Wolter, the membership director, welcomed the guests. Ben Loflin, Activities Director, reported that last weekend Paul Wolter won Top Flight NCRS award at Round Rock with his 86 pace car. He also commented on upcoming events including: Lewisville, September 18; Cowtown September 25-26; Eureka Springs on October 1-2, and Wimberley October th and our own Round-up event October 9-10 th. Joann asked if anyone was interested in going on the Grand Canyon trip September 4 th thru the 10 th with Mel Roggenbuck. She also reminded everyone about the Ice Cream Social at her house tomorrow night, August 21 st. The NCCC Governor, Gary Frederick, reported that the racing has started and the current NCCC president, Roger Mitchel, is not running again. Paul Wolter reported that Ted Melinda had checked out our timing lights and computer and they are operating properly. Also, he has worked out the glitch in the system with new software. Paul has picked up the printer and laptop and has all the equipment at his house for setting up the training session, probably Saturday, August 28 at 2:00 pm. Tin Hall Toys and Tejas Vettes will host an autocross September 4-6 at Mineral Wells and we need to attend and watch them run the timing. Also, sign up as corner workers to help them at their event and they will help us at our event in October. Joe said that Donna Snyder couldn t represent our club as NCCC governor. She is an NCCC member with Cowtown and cannot represent our club according to NCCC rules. Joe asked for volunteers for the position of NCCC governor but there were no takers. Keith Amendson reported on his trip to a Corvette event in Salt Flats, Utah, and said he did not meet a stranger everyone was friendly and helpful. A motion from the board meeting was discussed regarding charging for the Christmas Party to cover cleanup. Paulette Waggoner made a motion to charge $10 per person for the Christmas Party to cover the cost of cleanup afterwards. The motion was seconded and passed unanimously. Phil Schilt (Sr.) said he looked up the rules for the Chinese Auction and will bring the info to the Christmas party so it can be conducted correctly. The monthly raffle was held and the following people won gifts: Joann Powdril picture frame; Carol Factor wine; Carl Arbogast Stainless Steel Dallas Cowboys cup; Charles Whitaker NASCAR cookies; Mary Wolter baseball cap with pony tail; Jim Adams Caress Body Wash. Thanks to all who brought gifts. Dennis and Patti Bertwell invited everyone to go to the Olive Garden for dinner. The meeting adjourned at 8:30 PM. Respectfully submitted, Jeanette Bradley, Secretary

12 If you missed it! Dell Diamond Car Show. On Friday afternoon, August 13 th half a dozen CCT members caravanned to Round Rock, Texas to participate in the Annual Dell Diamond corvette show hosted by the Long Horn Corvette Club. Several other members drove down that evening, and several more showed up early Saturday morning. Paul and Mary Wolter entered their 86 Yellow Pace car convertible in both the NCRS Flight Judging and the Dell Diamond car show, along with about 150 other corvettes. Three NCRS judges started judging their Pace Car at 8:30 AM and completed at 3 PM in the afternoon! After all the results were tabulated, 6 NCRS entrants received top flight awards including the Pace Car ( points, two received 2 nd flight awards (85 to 94 points) and one received a 3 rd flight award (85 89 points). Paul and Mary were also invited (and have accepted) to display their Pace Car in the Pace Car Special Display on November 4 th 6 th at the Convention Center in Waco for the NCRS Texas Regional flight judging event, which is open to the public. Paul and Mary were fortunate and also received 2 nd place in the C4 corvette convertible class, which covered 86 through 96 convertibles, both stock and modified. Two of our members, Jim and Carolyn Adams were unlucky during the show and a gust of wind blew a nearby canopy into their corvette and broke the windshield, cut the dash and damaged the heads up display. Their car was left at the local Hewlett Chevrolet dealership for repairs, and they rode back to the DFW metroplex Sunday afternoon with Paul and Mary. After the Dell Diamond car show those CCT members who signed up for the Deluxe Package at the ball diamond ate with US troops who recently returned from Iraq. Ken and Jeanette said that because of some health problems they weren t able to sit on the brim to watch the game, so Paul and Mary arranged for all of us to watch the local Express Baseball Team beat El Paso from Chaz s suite located high above the grand stand seating between home plate and 1 st base. What a deal! Chaz is the general contractor who built the Dell Diamond base ball facility, and it turned out spectacular. There is even a swimming pool in the outfield and a children s playground! 86 Pace Car in Friend s Shop in Round Rock Two Neat Rodded Pickup Trucks in the Shop After the game Chaz invited Paul and Mary to store the Pace Car overnight in his shop located just down the street from the ball diamond. In the shop were were four of Chaz s six street rods and several Harley motorcycles. Wow, what a neat place, and what cool toys.

13 There is a Big Block Under the Hood! This was an Ebay Purchase! We also received a tour of Chaz s and Linda s 8,500 square foot home that had more amenities than I can remember! It was by far the nicest home we ve ever been in, or ever will be in, unless one of us wins the Texas lottery, becomes a rock star or a movie star.which is pretty unlikely. The Silver Coupe is going to be for Sale The 86 Pace Car Received a Top Flight Award The 60 x 100 foot shop had some neat adult toys, and Chaz picked up his new motor home the following week, that also gets stored inside the shop. Chaz sponsored our favorite NASCAR truck driver David Starr whenever David raced at the Texas Motor Speedway. Chaz continues to throw one huge party at TMS in the infield following the NASCAR Craftsman truck race. The next party is October 16 th, and starts immediately following the race. Submitted by Mary Wolter. Jim and Carolyn took up with Mel Roggenbuck and held our own mini-caravan to the Grand Canyon September 4 th thru 10 th. We had a grand time. Our Blue C-5 met Mel s White C-5 at TMS early Saturday morning to begin our journey. Our plans called for us to run up north on Texas 287 to Amarillo, then West through Albuquerque and into Flagstaff, which would be our base of operations for excursions to the Canyon and side trips to the Mother Road (US 66).

14 A little rain Saturday evening, but after that the weather was 100% perfect. Mid 70 s to low 80 s. At the altitudes around the canyon, those temperatures can feel quite sunny. Great for top-down fun! Our first evening in Flagstaff, we found old town along old US route 66 for dinner. I ve run on and around the Mother Road a couple of times, but I still get a great rush whenever I can plant the meats on 66 pavement. Picture Todd & Buzz. We decided to go to the North Rim Sunday, the first day. It s about 215 miles each way from Flagstaff, but the drive was magnificent. Thru the Navajo reservation and Painted Desert, parallel to the Echo bluffs, then across the Colorado at the far end. Back down to the south along the opposite Vermillion bluffs to the gates of the park. From the time we cross the Colorado it s a continuous, and sometimes aggressive, ascent to about 8,800 ft (remember that Denver is only 5,280 ). Some pretty neat, twisting and challenging roads switch-back style up the mountains (and back down again)!. Monday saw us at the South Rim. Much closer to Flagstaff which meant more time at the Park. We took our time, visiting I think all, or most, of the vantage points on that rim. We didn t try any of the fancy stuff, like hiking down the canyon, mule train, helicopter or falling over the edge. Just responsible, adult tourists. Forget that! Tuesday we headed for a long stretch of route 66 that runs from just west of Flagstaff to near the Arizona/Nevada border. About 90 miles, through a couple of neat Arizona main street towns and into Kingman. After lunch there we decided to try Sedona as our next overnight stop. Carolyn picked the route. With various deliberations (go back, then south. Go east, then north, etc) she decided. We ended up on the most delicious corvette road of all time! We had to encourage a couple of elderly sedans to pull over and let us pass, which they graciously did, in order to open up space on the road. But then, Wow! Think mega-autocross layout. Think pylons without points. Think hard on the brakes and harder on the clutch. Think rush! What a grand finale. We departed for home Thursday morning, staying that night in Santa Rosa, NM (where else but along the old route 66). We tried to dine in out of the way places, and Santa Rosa was no exception. We actually found the Old Route 66 Restaurant. (side note: Mel asked the hotel desk person for restaurant recommendations. Her answer? Dairy Queen is pretty good... ) But Friday morning was a little pensive. Mel s mother had been tending to the homestead in his absence, and he hadn t been able to get her on the phone Thursday evening or Friday morning. Mel was a bit concerned, so we broke off the caravan and his white C-5 was last seen gassing over the I-40 horizon. Good thing, too, as his mother had fallen and broken a hip Wednesday evening. I understand it was neighbors who discovered her and got her to the hospital. By the grace of God and good neighbors, I m told she is going to be fine.

15 Here are some pics of our journey.

26 Ed Page It is my intent to publish the Newsletter every month. I will try to have a Web version ready for publication by the end of the first week of each month. In order to meet my own expectations, here s what I need from you. Each chairperson (Activities, Charity, any officer or other wanting to have something published) should have newsletter articles ready by the fifth workday of each new month. Anybody can submit articles for publication. I will not edit for grammar, word choice, punctuation or other stuff I know nothing about. I might simply decide something warrants additional commentary, or needs to be shortened (I can t imagine lengthened). Otherwise it will be included in the publication as received. Articles should be in Microsoft Word format. If you have photos, they should be digital and in JPG format. All articles, files, photos, etc, should be sent to the editor via as an attachment. Call me if you have questions. Due to costs of printing and mailing, complete printed versions of the Newsletter have not been distributed. Some people will have not received prior issues. We are exploring less costly alternatives.
