Since joining the Atlantic 10 Conference in 2002, Richmond has posted a record of , an mark in the Conference, earned two NCAA Tournament appearances and had four All-Americans. In their inaugural Atlantic 10 year, Atkins led his team into postseason play for the seventh time in school history. The 2002 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year then led his team past Navy and Wake Forest to capture the Winston-Salem Regional Championship. After a threegame Super Regional series loss at Nebraska, the Spiders returned to Richmond with a school-record 53 wins and eight new single-season team marks including runs, RBI, hits and doubles. In 2003, Atkins led the Spiders, who began the season ranked No. 9 by the NCBWA, to their first Atlantic 10 Championship and again into the NCAA Tournament. Richmond travelled to Sunken Diamond in Palo Alto, Calif., and fell in the Regional Championship to eventual College World Series runner-up Stanford. In his Richmond career Atkins teams have set many marks, but as a coach he has also accomplished greatness. In his 15th season at the helm Atkins became the winningest coach in school history by winning his 435th game, surpassing Malcolm Pitt s mark of 434 wins in 37 years. On April 20, 2001, Richmond garnered a 10-3 win over James Madison helping Atkins earn his 500th career win in only 890 games. Since then he has picked up win number 600, and followed it up with number 650 during the 2005 season. Atkins, who has announced his intentions to retire following the 2007 season, was named a 2007 Spider Athletics Hall of Fame Inductee and was enshrined alongside his 2002 Super Regional squad prior to the 2007 baseball season. In 22 years at Richmond, Atkins has compiled a record of and, from , guided the Spiders to 10 consecutive winning seasons and four NCAA Tournament Appearances. A record five players were taken from the Richmond roster by Major League Baseball in Junior Tim Stauffer was one of those five and became the highest drafted Spider in school history. Stauffer, a native of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., was taken fourth overall by the San Diego Padres in In 2004, Jim Fasano, Bobby Lenoir, Thomas Martin and Bryan Pritz signed professional contracts. Last season, Ben Zeskind was drafted in the 37th round by the Toronto Blue Jays and was named a New York-Penn League All-Star in his first season of professional baseball. Two years later his 1988 team posted a mark of to the surpass the old mark. Beginning in 1990, Atkins squads topped its win record in three consecutive seasons, moving the mark to 32 in In 1994, Richmond posted 36 wins and then broke that mark in 1995 with 43 wins. Over the next six seasons the Spiders best win total was 41 before they posted the current record of 53 wins in Atkins amassed a record in his 16 seasons in the Colonial Athletic Association from Under his direction, Richmond won two-straight Colonial Athletic Association titles in 1997 and 1998, and advanced to the CAA Championship finals in eight of 16 seasons.

5 Richmond, which finished its 15-season run in the CAA with a Conference Tournament mark of 36-25, finished second in the 1995 CAA Tournament but was awarded its third NCAA invitation. After finishing atop the league in 1999, the Spiders finished fourth at the CAA Tournament but were awarded their second NCAA at-large bid in five years. Atkins has taken the Spiders to seven of Richmond s eight NCAA Tournament appearances (1986, 1995, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2002 and 2003). 8 2007 Preview Alex Wotring Rob Berzinskas 18 Hall of Fame head coach Ron Atkins enters his 23rd season at Richmond, knowing it will be his last, but not planning to approach it any different than the previous 22 seasons. Prior to the season he discussed what he sees the 2007 squad being able to achieve, how the new coaching staff will effect the team and his idea of a storybook ending to What are your team s goals for the upcoming season? This year the Atlantic 10 is going to be pretty strong. I think one of our main goals is to be in the top six at the end of the season so we get to the A-10 Tournament. Overall, I think our goal is to improve on our performance from last season. We would like to keep our pitching staff healthy and just get back into the conference tournament with a shot at playing in a regional. What are the strengths of this year s team? If our pitching staff is healthy, with the likes of Ian Marshall, Rob Berzinskas and Alex Hale, we should be pretty strong. Offensively, we should score more runs compared to last season. Even without Ben Zeskind I think we will be able to score more runs because our guys are a year older and stronger. We have some guys who are going to be able to help in producing those runs. Defensively, I didn t think we were a very good ballclub last year. We have to tighten up our defense. Overall, I feel like if we are able to stay healthy then our pitching staff should be a big strength for us. Who are some of the leaders for this team, both on and off the field? Alex Wotring is definitely an on-the-field leader as well as off the field. Fifth-year senior Andrew Justice brings some credibility and is a great kid as well as a great leader. Rob Berzinskas knows what he has to do this year, being his fourth season, and I think he will lead our staff. Those guys are going to be very beneficial in leading our team. If Joe Mahoney is able to have a good year then we will see results from the entire team. If we can get somebody to hit in front and behind him then he should have some great numbers. If all of that works then we are going to win some ballgames. We will look for Cameron Brown to put up some bigger numbers than he did last season. Justice should also be a major contributor offensively. We would also like to see Wotring, Matt McKenna and Vince Riggi add some firepower to the offensive part of our ballclub. Matt McKenna Who are some of the newcomers you see contributing right away? We have to get some good innings out of our younger pitchers. They are going to be very instrumental in our success. We are probably going to have to bring Evan Stehle along so he can possibly catch every other game. We feel with his bat, Stehle could really help us right away. Matt Zielinski is another newcomer who will contribute right away, in fact he will probably be considered for one of our weekend starter roles right out of the gate. Are you approaching this season any different since you know it is your last? I am not going to approach this season any different than I have the last 22 years. I am going to continue to coach third base, but if it gets to the point where it is a detriment to the team then I won t go out there -- especially when I can t get out of the way of the line drives. I am going to coach the same way I have in the past since this season still counts against our record. How will the new staff influence the team? I think having our new associate head coach Mark McQueen will help stabilize our pitching staff a great deal. Ryan Wheeler has done a great job so far and he will continue to help the players in a number of ways. Joe Frostick is in his second season and will continue to do a great job for us. Our hitting philosophies are basically the same as what we have had in the past and with those Ryan will add stability to our offense. What will you remember most about your 23-year career here at Richmond? I hope I remember the good times and forget the bad times. Being in Lincoln, Neb., for the 2002 Super Regional was a joy. You remember the Regionals and a lot of the CAA Championship games were always dogfights facing such great competition. I will remember the players -- Sean Casey, Mike Walton, Brian Jordan and Vito Chiaravalotti just to name a few. I will always remember what the players have gone on to become. The one memory I can always recall is Vito s homerun in Lincoln, Neb., and there being total silence in that ballpark full of red. What would be a story-book ending for this season? I would love for us to play well enough down the stretch to win the A-10 Tournament and get into a Regional. The way it is situated now, once you get there, you have a good chance of advancing. We just have to get there. That would definitely be a storybook ending. Vince Riggi
