1 Head Coach Mark McQueen # Collegiate Baseball National Pitching Coach of the Year Sam Houston State 84 First Season as Head Coach 14th season with the Spiders 12 Mark McQueen will enter his first season as the Spiders head coach in 2008, after 13 years with the program as an assistant coach. McQueen was a Richmond assistant coach from and returned to the Spiders in 2007 as the associate head coach under Hall of Famer Ron Atkins, who retired at season s end. The eighth head coach in Richmond history, McQueen returned to Richmond after spending the previous six seasons ( ) as the pitching coach at Virginia Commonwealth. The 2003 Collegiate Baseball National Pitching Coach of the Year helped the Rams to an overall mark of in six seasons, including four NCAA Tournament appearances. His 2003 pitching staff sported a national-best 2.54 ERA while leading the Rams to a mark, a CAA Championship and berth in the NCAA Tournament. A total of eight pitchers were drafted from VCU during his six seasons with the Rams, including current Chicago Cub hurler Sean Marshall and San Diego Padre reliever Cla Meredith. In all, a total of 24 pitchers under McQueen s direction have been selected by Major League teams, including 16 during his 13 seasons at Richmond (Alex Hale was drafted in 2007). McQueen, a native of Ankeny, Iowa, along with Atkins, helped lead the Spiders to an overall mark of in his 12 seasons with Richmond from In that time, McQueen helped take the Spiders to the CAA title game seven times, won the Conference Championship twice and earned four NCAA Tournament berths. In his first year back on Atkins staff in 2007, the Spiders made a return trip to the Atlantic 10 Championships and finished the season A number of individual performances during McQueen s Richmond tenure still rank among the Spiders all-time Top-10 lists, including Sean Gavaghan s ( ) all-time lead in career wins with 33. Two other Spiders under McQueen s tutelage still rank among the all-time Top-5 in career wins, including Mike Smith s ( ) 31 victories and Bobby St. Pierre s ( ) 28 wins. Smith (337), Gavaghan (291) and St. Pierre (282) all rank behind former Spider Tim Stauffer s total of 362 in the Top-5 for all-time career strikeouts. Five of McQueen s former Spider pitchers rank tied among the Top-3 in single-season wins with 11, including St. Pierre s 11-1 (.917) mark in 1994 which is also second alltime on Richmond s single-season winning percentage list. Prior to his career at Sam Houston State, Mc- Queen attended Iowa Western Community College for two years and competed in the 1980 Junior College World Series. After receiving a business administration degree from Sam Houston State, McQueen signed with the Detroit Tigers organization and pitched one season for the Tri-City Triplets of the Northwest League. After being forced out of baseball due to an elbow injury, McQueen started his coaching career at Iowa State as an assistant coach. McQueen spent one season on the Cyclones staff in 1988, going in Ames, Iowa. He also worked two years at the Cyclone Midwest Baseball School as the Assistant Director of Operations and pitching instructor. McQueen and his wife, Michelle, have two children, Travis and Tara.

2 Ryan Wheeler is entering his second season as an assistant coach. Wheeler will direct all of Richmond recruiting efforts while focusing on instruction for both the hitters and infielders. One of the most respected coaches in the East, Wheeler joins the Spider coaching staff after serving one season as an assistant at Penn prior to a nine-year stint as an assistant at the College of William & Mary. His coaching efforts helped the Tribe set several school records during his tenure, including a ranking of No. 10 nationally in team hitting and Chad Oxendine is entering his first season on the Richmond baseball staff. He brings a wealth of collegiate experience with him as a player at Coastal Carolina and most recently as the volunteer assistant at Alabama. Oxendine, who spent last year with the Crimson Tide, played four years at Coastal Carolina and led the Chanticleers to four-straight Big South Conference titles and NCAA Regional berths between 2001 and Oxendine was a four-year letterman and cocaptain his junior and senior years for Coach Gary Joe Frostick begins his third year as the Spiders volunteer assistant coach. Frostick will assist Wheeler with hitting instruction and coach the outfielders. Frostick came to Richmond prior to the 2006 season after five years coaching at Douglas Freeman High School and the Post 125 American Legion squad in Richmond. The Henrico High School graduate played one year of both football and baseball at North Ryan Wheeler #7 Penn State 94 Assistant Coach (Infielders, Hitters) Recruiting Coordinator Second Year at Richmond 14th in the country in runs scored per game following the 2004 season. Wheeler helped guide the 2001 William & Mary squad to a then-school record 35 wins enroute to its first-ever CAA Championship and berth in the NCAA Regionals. Wheeler has mentored a total of 15 players taken in the Major League Baseball Draft, including Joe Mahoney (Baltimore, 2007) Brendan Harris (Chicago Cubs, 2001), Chris Ray (Baltimore, 2003), Chris Shaver (Chicago Cubs, 2004) and Bill Bray (Montreal, 2004). Wheeler has also helped several student-athletes attain All-America and Freshman All-America honors including Michael Brown (2003), Chris Chad Oxendine #8 Coastal Carolina 04 Assistant Coach (Catchers) First Year at Richmond Gilmore at CCU, playing during the winningest four-year stretch in team history (171-80). He was named Second Team All-Big South as a senior and made the Big South All-Championship Team that year. Following his collegiate career, Oxendine signed as a free agent with the Chicago White Sox, where he spent one season with the Bristol (Va.) White Sox in the short season Appalachian League. During the 2006 season, he served as the volunteer assistant coach at UNC-Wilmington. The Seahawks posted a overall record and played in the NCAA Regional. A 1999 graduate of Avalon Academy in Dillon, S.C., Oxendine led the Falcons to the AA State Championship, posting a 25-3 record as a Joe Frostick #46 North Carolina 74 Volunteer Assistant Coach (Outfielders) Third Year at Richmond Carolina in Frostick s father, Douglas, played both football and baseball at Richmond. The elder Frostick s football coach was Ed Merrick, while his baseball coach for the Spiders was the legendary Mac Pitt. Frostick, a native of Richmond, Va., has two children, Whitney and Blake.
