The Bulldogs moved up one spot in two straight polls to No. 2 last week behind top-ranked Lewis- Clark State. The Bulldogs stayed at No. 2 this week behind Lewis-Clark and just ahead of Oklahoma City Univ., which CU beat 3-of-4 at OCU in March, and the Univ. of British Columbia. The No. 2 ranking is the highest for the Bulldogs since earning the second spot in the preseason poll in CU already has nine victories this season over ranked opponents three versus OCU, two against Embry-Riddle and Bethel Univ., and one versus Campbellsville Univ. and Lee Univ. CU won 2-of-3 over Union Univ. earlier this season before Union moved into the Top 25. Greener leads the nation in six categories Senior Matt Greener s numbers continue to amaze, with the third baseman leading the nation in six categories and ranking in the Top 4 in four others heading into this weekend s series at Martin Methodist. The Jupiter, Fla., native leads the country in batting average (.500), home runs (18), total bases (154), slugging percentage (.975) and RBIs (66) as well as total bases per game. He also ranks second in hits per game and home runs per game, third in total hits (79) and fourth in RBIs per game. Greener s 30-game hitting streak came to an end in last Saturday s fi rst game against Freed-Hardeman after an 0-for-3 day that includes two rockets right at people. He rebounded with a double, two hits and a run scored in the second game against the Lions. He has 25 multi-hit and 16 multi-rbi contests this season and is batting.548 (23-for-42) with eight doubles, four homers, 15 RBIs and 16 runs scored in TranSouth action. How ridiculous are some of the overall numbers for Greener? In the last 23 games, he has 16 multi-hit efforts, including 10 games with at three hits and one four-hit outing. He has his safely in 43 of the team s 45 contests this season. Appleton does a little of everything Junior Greg Appleton did such a great job getting on base and producing at the bottom of the lineup that he was moved to the leadoff spot 11 games ago. The Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, native has excelled in that role, scoring 16 runs in the 11 contests but also driving in 12 runs as well. He has six doubles, one triple and two home runs during the stretch as well while batting.341 (15-for-44). Appleton started the year slowly but has been on the team s most consistent players over the last 23 games, batting.384 (28-for-73) with nine doubles, fi ve home runs, 22 RBIs and 28 runs scored. He has done some of his best work in TranSouth Conference action, ranking second on the club with a.447 average (17-for- 38) with seven doubles, 10 RBIs and 14 runs scored. Appleton had one of the biggest hits of the series in the sweep at Trevecca Nazarene two weekends ago, a two-run triple in the sixth inning of Saturday s fi rst game that gave the Bulldogs a 7-3 lead. He is batting.345 overall this season with 11 doubles, 10 home runs, 36 RBIs and 38 runs scored in 38 games. Schaefer runs record to 9-0 Senior Shawn Schaefer posted his ninth straight victory last Friday with six innings of work against Freed-Hardeman. The lefthander allowed three runs on fi ve hits, walked three and struck out seven, though some of his troubles came after the Bulldogs scored 16 runs in the middle innings of the contest. He has allowed just 14 total runs, 10 earned, in the nine outings, and has victories over North Alabama, Missouri Baptist, Oklahoma City Univ., Embry- Riddle, Union Univ., Bethel Univ., Trevecca and Freed-Hardeman. Schaefer has given up just nine extra-base hits all season and is ranked in the Top 10 nationally in fi ve categories, including second in victories, fourth in ERA, eighth in total runs allowed, ninth in earned runs allowed and 10th in innings pitched per game (7.1). He also ranks 16th in opponent batting average (.198) and 21st in runs allowed per game (1.56). Kautz comes alive Senior Max Kautz put together his best stretch of games all season last week, going 10-for-14 (.714) in four games with fi ve extra base hits, 10 RBIs, eight runs scored and a slugging percentage. The Palo Alto, Calif., native started the week with a two-run triple and a two-rbi double in a victory over Bryan College and then collected seven hits in CU s three-game sweep of Freed-Hardeman. He homered twice, doubled and drove in fi ve runs in his only three at-bats in Friday s opener against FHU and added fi ve more hits, one RBI and fi ve runs scored in Saturday s sweep of the Lions. Kautz raised his batting average 49 points in the four contests to.299 overall and has six doubles, seven homers, 33 RBIs and 40 runs scored in 41 games this season. He had not recorded back-to-back multi-hit games all season until the last four, a feat he accomplished four times for a total of 15 games in the second half of the 2009 campaign. Wilkerson dominant in victory over FHU Junior Aaron Wilkerson posted another dominating performance in last Saturday s 4-1 triumph over Freed-Hardeman, allowing just four hits and one run for his seventh consecutive victory. The righthander ran into trouble only once in the game after consecutive singles to leadoff the fourth, but a strikeout, an infi eld fl y and a fl yout ended the inning. FHU s only run came on a solo homer from Noslen Labrada, the fi rst home run allowed this season by the Waco, Texas, native. This came after a very tough outing the previous week at Trevecca Nazarene, one in which Wilkerson persevered through several tough innings and more than 130 pitches to earn the victory. He was touched for three runs in the fi rst two innings and could have been worse, as TNU stranded a pair of runners in the fi rst and left the bases loaded

Wilkerson ran into trouble again in the sixth when the Trojans left two more runners on base but worked out of the jam and earned the win in a 7-3 triumph. Overall this season he is now 7-1 with a 2.10 ERA and 59 strikeouts in 51.1 innings of work and ranks 22nd nationally in ERA and 24th in opponent batting average (.205). He is also 4-0 with a 2.25 ERA in four TranSouth starts as well and now has victories this season over Oklahoma City Univ., Embry-Riddle, Union Univ., Bethel Univ., Trevecca Nazarene and Freed-Hardeman. Sprague picks up his teammate Adam Sprague s senior season has been a roller coaster of sorts, with the lefthander starting the season with three straight victories and a 1.42 ERA in his fi rst four outings. He allowed just three earned runs and 21 hits in 19.0 innings with 20 strikeouts in the four appearances, but followed that with a pair of losses and a string of poor performances. The Winter Park, Fla., native got back on the right track by earning his fourth victory of the year with eight strong innings on April 11 versus Lindsey Wilson. He walked two and struck out seven against LWC, allowing two unearned runs. Sprague followed that up with three shutout frames of relief in last Saturday s second game against Freed-Hardeman, earning his fi rst save of the year. He gave up just two hits and did not walk a batter. For the season Sprague is now 4-2 with a 3.35 ERA and 37 strikeouts in 43.0 innings of work. Series History Cumberland hits the road for a three-game series against Martin Methodist this weekend in Pulaski. The Bulldogs are 21-3 against the RedHawks since 2004, including 7-2 at Sam Davis Park. CU won 2-of-3 in the series in Pulaski in 2004 and 2008 and swept the three-game series in Cumberland won all three meetings with MMC last season, sweeping a doubleheader at home (14-5, 9-1) before the third game was rained out and then winning 8-6 in 12 innings at the TranSouth Championships in Jackson, Tenn. The Bulldogs have won six straight in the series and nine of the last 10 meetings overall. Post needs help for fifth victory Senior Robert Post posted his fi fth victory of the year in last Saturday s second game against Freed-Hardeman, but the righthander needed some help after cruising through the fi rst four innings. The Mt. Juliet, Tenn., native seemed to lose his command totally in the fi fth, allowing two singles and a walk before Adam Sprague came on to get a doubleplay and a groundout to end the threat. Post gave up one run in six hits with four walks and two strikeouts in the four-plus innings. He took advantage of some early run support and shutout Trevecca Nazarene in the series fi nale two weeks ago in Nashville, allowing just six hits with three strikeouts in the fi ve-inning affair. It was probably Post s best effort since his fi rst start of the year, a complete game three-hitter against the Univ. of St. Francis. He allowed more than one baserunner in an inning just once against TNU and worked around the leadoff man reaching base in three of the fi ve innings. Post now has three victories in his last four outings, tossing 14.2 innings and giving up two earned runs on 15 hits with 13 strikeouts against Bethel Univ., Lee Univ., Trevecca and Freed-Hardeman. He is now 5-2 on the season with a 2.70 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 33.1 innings of work. Post missed 17 days at the beginning of March with an injury and is just now rounding into form from last season when he gave up just 45 hits in 78.1 innings of work with 78 strikeouts. Miller cools a bit After a slow start to the season, senior Kris Miller has become one of the Bulldogs most important players, hitting in the cleanup spot and providing offense in a number of different ways. The New Caney, Texas, native hit a small speed bump in last weekend s series against Freed-Hardeman, hitting the ball hard on several occasions but going 0-for-6 in Saturday s doubleheader versus the Lions. Nevertheless, Miller ranks in the Top 30 nationally in four categories, including 14th in home runs (13), 19th in total bases (114) and RBIs (55) and 28th in home runs per game. He seems to be in the middle of almost every Bulldog rally, whether driving in runs or collecting base hits. He also ranks second on the club with 24 walks, getting on base for Matt Greener, who leads the nation in home runs and RBIs. Miller s big bat was especially explosive two weeks ago, as he earned TranSouth Player of the Week honors. He batted.579 (11-for-19) with three home runs, one double, one triple, 13 RBIs and six walks in contests versus Lee Univ., Campbellsville Univ Cumberland Baseball and Trevecca Nazarene. He collected fi ve hits in nine at-bats in three games at TNU with a double, a triple and two homers. His three-run shot in Friday s opener put the Bulldogs ahead early in a 15-3 triumph, and his three-run homer in Saturday s fi rst game proved to be the gamewinner, as the Bulldogs erased a 3-0 defi cit. He is batting.385 overall heading into this weekend s series at Martin Methodist and 16 doubles and 48 runs scored. Miller is also batting.359 (14-for-39) with six doubles, three homers, a team-best 16 RBIs and 13 runs scored in TranSouth Conference action this season. Tidbits Junior Jesse Bowman has taken advantage of his recent opportunities in the lineup, going 7-for-18 (.389) with one double, a triple, fi ve runs scored, fi ve RBIs and three stolen bases in the last eight games. The Mt. Juliet, Tenn., native started the fi nal two games at Trevecca Nazarene and all three TranSouth outings versus Freed- Hardeman, notching fi ve hits and four RBIs in the fi ve contests. Bowman is batting.245 overall this season with 10 RBIs and 17 runs scored in 49 at-bats After a torrid stretch of games, junior David Fanshawe hit a speed bump at the plate last weekend against Freed-Hardeman, collecting just one hit in nine at-bats (.111) with one walk. The Miami, Fla., native batted.452 (19-for-42) with three doubles, four home runs and 10 RBIs over a 14-game stretch from March 26-April 12, a stretch that coincided with the start of TranSouth action. Even with last weekend s struggled, Fanshawe is still batting.361 (13-for-36) with three homers and seven RBIs in TranSouth play and has nine doubles, fi ve home runs and 25 RBIs with a.341 batting average overall this season Senior Troy Frazier s all-or-nothing style has been very productive this season and although he had just one hit in last weekend s sweep of Freed- Hardeman, the Louisville, Ky., native put together productive at-bats during the series. Frazier scored twice despite not getting a hit in Friday s opener and then registered a pair of sacrifi ce fl ies, one in each game of Saturday s doubleheader. He has 51 RBIs and 51 runs scored this season in 45 games while batting.373 with eight doubles and 16 home runs Senior Dave Weyer returned to the starting lineup in last Monday s contest versus Bryan College at Veterans Field, collecting a single, a walk and two runs scored and making one of the best defensive plays of the year in centerfi eld. The Oak Lawn, Ill., native started all three contests last weekend against Freed-Hardeman at second base, registering two hits and a run scored in the series.

5 Team Nuggets Cumberland has scored in the fi rst inning in 22 of the team s 45 contests this season, netting 48 runs. The Bulldogs have scored 167 total runs in the fi rst three innings this season Cumberland is 28-0 this year when leading after six innings, a tribute to the starters and their ability to fi nish games (19 complete games) and also to a good relief corps that has posted a 6-2 record with six saves and a 3.56 ERA Cumberland has scored in double fi gures 19 times this season, posting an 18-1 record in those games, and has posted double-digit hits in 27 contests, going 24-3 in those outings Cumberland pitchers have 19 complete games so far in 2010 and have allowed three runs or fewer in 24 contests (18 with two runs or less). The Bulldogs have also given up eight hits or less in a game 28 times this season. Miller, Post named Players of the Week Seniors Kris Miller and Robert Post were named the TranSouth Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, on April 12 after helping the Bulldogs to a three-game sweep of rival Trevecca Nazarene and a victory over No. 8 Lee University. Cumberland has now claimed 12 of the 18 TranSouth Player of the Week awards this season. Miller was 11-for-19 (.579) in six games with three home runs, one double, one triple, 13 RBIs and six walks, as the Bulldogs went 5-1 for the week. The senior walked three times and hit a solo homer in the triumph over Lee and added a single and an RBI versus Campbellsville Univ. In the three games against TNU, the New Caney, Texas, native collected fi ve hits in nine at-bats with a double, a triple and two homers. His three-run shot in Friday s opener put the Bulldogs ahead early in a 15-3 triumph, and his three-run homer in Saturday s fi rst game proved to be the game-winner. He added three more hits Sunday against Lindsey Wilson. Post picked up two victories during the week, one in relief against Lee Univ. and one in a six-hit shutout of Trevecca. The righthander got the fi nal fi ve outs in a wild game against Lee, striking out four and allowing just one hit. He then scattered six hits, walked one and struck out three in a fi ve-inning shutout of Trevecca in the fi nal contest of the three-game sweep by the Bulldogs. Hunt begins his 28th season as head coach of the Bulldogs in 2009 and his 31st with the Cumberland program. He has amassed an impressive resume along the way and continues to add to his credentials with each passing year. But even more importantly Hunt continues to play a major role within the overall landscape of the University as well as in the Lebanon and Wilson County communities where so many of his former players have settled into lives after baseball. Hunt is one of only six coaches in history to register 1,000 career victories in the NAIA and heads into the 09 season with a 1, overall record. The Bulldogs have appeared in 10 NAIA World Series, including four in the last fi ve seasons, but his most crowning program achievement came when CU claimed the 2004 national championship in Lewiston, Idaho. The Bulldogs have fi nished as the national runner-up on two other occasions, in 1995 and Cumberland has won 16 conference championships during Hunt s tenure, including 10 in the Tennessee HUNT S YEAR-BY-YEAR Collegiate Athletic Conference (TCAC), fi ve in the Mid- South Conference (MSC) and one in the TranSouth Conference (TSAC). CU has four district championships, 11 NAIA regional titles and has played in fi ve super regionals as well. The program has posted 20 seasons with 40 or more victories, including 16 of the last 17 years, while registering 50 or more wins seven times, all in the last dozen seasons. The 2004 squad set the school-record for victories with 59. The Bulldogs have produced 51 NAIA All-Americans, including Steve Green, the only three-time All-American in program history. Seventy-two of Hunt s former players have signed professional contracts. The Bulldogs have posted a record over the last six seasons with fi ve NAIA World Series appearances, one runner-up fi nish and one national title. Hunt has also achieved individual success in the awards category, claiming 16 Coach of the Year honors, including the 2006 Rawlings National Coach of the Year award. He is a seven-time Southeast Region Coach of the Year and has also been a fi nalist for the National Coach of the Year Award four times. Perhaps his greatest achievement lies in the facilities in which his team plays, practices and dresses. Cumberland has one of the fi nest baseball facilities in the nation, second to none in the NAIA, with Ernest L. Stockton Field and its 500 chairback seats and stateof-the-art press box, the Benton Jennings Indoor Hitting Complex and the Jeanette C. Rudy Clubhouse.
