1 FIELD STAFF KEITH BODIE MANAGER Keith Bodie, reigning Texas League Manager of the Year, embarks on his second season as Corpus Christi s fi eld chief in is his sixth consecutive year in the Astros system and his 38th professional season. He served as Hooks hitting coach in Last season, Corpus Christi topped the Texas League with a franchise-best regular-season record. The Hooks took the South Division second-half crown, claiming 63 of their fi nal 97 games for a.649 winning percentage. Corpus Christi led the league in runs (736), RBIs (665), slugging percentage (.410), on-base percentage (.342) and tied for fi rst in batting average (.268). The campaign marked Bodie s return to the managerial ranks for the fi rst time since 2005, when he directed the Harrisburg Senators of the Eastern League. Bodie s current run in the Houston organization began in 2008 when he worked as the hitting coach for Salem (Va.) of the Carolina League. The Brooklyn native also tutored Astros Triple-A hitters in Round Rock (2010) and Oklahoma City (2011). In 16 seasons as a manager from the short-season Class A level through Triple-A, Bodie s teams have compiled a regular-season record of 1, for an overall winning percentage of.520. Nine of his clubs have qualifi ed for post-season play, including last year s Hooks and the Texas League s Wichita Wranglers from 2000 through In fi ve campaigns as a Texas League manager, Bodie s clubs have won fi ve second-half championships. His TL charges stand for a.558 winning percentage. That ranks as the seventh-highest career winning percentage among circuit skippers with at least 500 games at the helm. A third-round pick of the New York Mets in the 1974 draft out of South Shore High School in Brooklyn, Bodie spent nine seasons as a player in the Mets and Astros farm systems, reaching the Triple-A level with Tucson in Primarily a third baseman and outfi elder, he posted a career.256 batting average with 42 home runs, 294 RBIs and 98 stolen bases in 869 games. Bodie transitioned to coaching in 1983 with the Auburn Astros of the New York-Penn League. He coached with Double-A Columbus of the Southern League for two seasons before landing his fi rst managerial post in 1986 at Auburn. Bodie was named South Atlantic League Manager of the Year in 1987 when he guided the Asheville Tourists to a record and a fi nals appearance. The following year his Osceola Astros made it to the Florida State League title series after going during the regular season. His other managerial assignments included Clinton, San Bernardino, Calgary, Phoenix and Bakersfi eld. In 1993, Bodie had the opportunity to manage the Maui Stingrays in the inaugural season of the Hawaiian Winter League. Bodie also spent six years as San Francisco s Minor League Field Coordinator ( ). Following Wichita s exit from the playoffs in 2001, he had the opportunity to serve as a coach with the Kansas City Royals during the fi nal month of the season. Bodie s talents have also been utilized by Hollywood. Hired as a technical advisor for the 1985 Neil Simon fi lm The Slugger s Wife, Bodie spent fi ve months teaching lead actor Michael O Keefe how to hit and play the game. Bodie appears in the movie in one scene as the clubhouse manager for the Atlanta Braves. A resident of Gilbert, Arizona in the off-season, Bodie and wife Stacy have two daughters, Brittney and Breeana, and a son, Robert. 4

3 FIELD STAFF GARY RUBY PITCHING COACH Gary Ruby is in his sixth season as a pitching coach in the Astros system and his second in Corpus Christi. He came to South Texas after three years as pitching coach for the Tri-City ValleyCats of the New York-Penn League. Ruby has worked as a pitching coach or minor league pitching coordinator since 1987, when he was hired by the California Angels. His nine-year stint with the Angels included stops as a pitching coach in Midland, Edmonton and Vancouver. He then spent as pitching coach for Cleveland s Triple-A affi liate in Buffalo. Ruby worked from in the Phillies organization, concluding his term as the system s director of player personnel for a year and a half. He then moved on to Pittsburgh, where he spent six seasons ( ) as the Pirates minor league pitching coordinator. Ruby joined the Astros in 2008 as pitching coach for Salem of the Carolina League. Ruby served parts of three seasons as pitching coach for Leones del Escogido in the Dominican Republic. Escogido captured the Dominican Winter League title in 2012, posting a team ERA of Selected by Cleveland in the 22nd round of the 1969 draft out of Arizona State University, Ruby spent three seasons as a pitcher in the Indians farm system. He received a bachelor s degree in Health, Physical Education and Recreation from the University of Tampa and later earned a master s degree in Adult and Secondary Education at the University of Scranton. Ruby, who makes his off-season home in Archbald, Pennsylvania, grew up around the game of baseball. His grandfather, Joe Paparella, was an American League umpire for 20 years ( ) and worked four World Series (1948, 1951, 1957 and 1963). 6

4 FIELD STAFF TIM GARLAND HITTING COACH Tim Garland begins his fi rst season with the Astros organization following seven years as a coach in the Oakland system. Garland served as hitting coach of the rival Midland RockHounds over the past two seasons. The 15-year minor league veteran made his coaching debut in 2006 with Kane County of the Midwest League and tutored High-A Stockton hitters from Drafted by the New York Yankees in 1989 out of Pensacola Junior College, Garland notched a career.281 batting average in 1,356 games and 5,138 at-bats. He tallied 1,445 hits, 41 home runs, 471 RBIs and 388 stolen bases. Garland worked four seasons as a Yankee farmhand, reaching the Carolina League before moving to the independent ranks. He played under Astros great Jose Cruz in 1994 as a member of the Texas-Louisiana League s San Antonio Tejanos. The following year, Garland hit.301 with 20 doubles, nine home runs, 44 RBIs and 37 stolen bases in 96 games for Rio Grande Valley, managed by former Houston catcher Alan Ashby. Signed by San Francisco as a free agent in 1996, he was in the Giants system for two and a half seasons when Keith Bodie was minor league fi eld coordinator. Garland batted.304, swiped 116 bases and totaled 343 hits over two campaigns with San Jose. He hit safely in 23 consecutive games in 96, establishing a club record which stood until Garland is still the SJ Giants single-season standard bearer in steals (65) and hits (172), both achieved in He fi nished the 1998 season in the Orioles system before being picked up by the Athletics. Garland played for the 1999 RockHounds, the fi rst season of their Oakland affi liation, batting.289 with six home runs, 55 RBIs and 28 stolen bases. Garland logged three years in the Triple-A Mexican League, suiting up for Campeche, Tabasco and Reynosa. He hit.308 with 90 runs scored, 24 doubles, fi ve home runs, 49 RBIs and 37 stolen bases south of the border. The well-traveled outfi elder also made stops at Long Island (Atlantic League), Winnipeg (Northern League Central), Amarillo (Central League), Sioux City (Northern League Central), Nashua (Atlantic League), Atlantic City (Atlantic League) and Jackson (Central League) before calling it a career in Garland currently resides in Danville, Virginia. 7

5 FIELD STAFF MARK BAILEY DEVELOPMENTAL SPECIALIST Former Astros catcher Mark Bailey returns to Corpus Christi following a two-year stint as hitting coach for the Tri-City ValleyCats of the New York- Penn League. Last season, the ValleyCats captured fi rst place in the Stedler Division before falling to Hudson Valley in the fi nals. Tri-City hitters placed fi rst in home runs, tied for fi rst in team batting and ranked second in runs scored. Following eight years as Houston s bullpen coach, Bailey served as Hooks hitting chief in It marked a return to the Texas League for the fi rst time since 2001, when he coached then-double-a Round Rock. Under Bailey s guidance, Round Rock led the circuit in team batting and home runs in Now in his 16th year as a coach in the Astros organization, Bailey returned to baseball as a hitting coach in 1998 with Kissimmee of the Florida State League. In 1999, he moved up to Double-A Jackson, coaching for the Generals in their fi nal Mississippi season before the franchise relocated to Round Rock. Selected by the Astros in the sixth round of the 1982 draft out of Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State), Bailey was a three-year letterman in both baseball and basketball for the Bears. He was a two-time Division II All- American in baseball and played in the Division II College World Series. On the court, he led the Bears in rebounding and fi eld goal percentage as a sophomore. Bailey caught for 13 seasons professionally, spending portions of seven years in the Major Leagues with Houston and San Francisco. His best season was 1985, when he hit.265 with 10 home runs and 45 RBIs, while starting in 96 games for Houston. Bailey played 57 games for the 1986 National League Western Division champion Astros. A switch-hitter, Bailey became the 13th player in National League history to homer from both sides of the plate in the same game when he clubbed a pair of solo shots at the Astrodome in Houston s 10-9 win over San Diego on September 16, He is one of 52 NL players to accomplish the feat. Bailey, wife Mary Pat and son John Patrick live in Fulshear, Texas. 8

6 FIELD STAFF BRYAN BACA ATHLETIC TRAINER Bryan Baca is in his seventh season with the Astros organization and his fi rst at Corpus Christi. Baca comes to the Sparkling City after a two-year stay at Lancaster of the California League. Baca began his tenure with Houston in 2007 as Rookie League Greeneville s athletic trainer. He then served three seasons for the Tri-City Valley- Cats in the New York-Penn League. Prior to his employment with the Astros, Baca worked for the Santa Fe RoadRunners of the North American Hockey League. A native of Santa Fe, Baca graduated from New Mexico State with a B.S. in Athletic Training. During the off-season, he works in the university s sports and physical therapy clinic. TREY WIEDMAN STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING COACH Trey Wiedman is in his fi rst season with the Hooks and his second campaign as a strength and conditioning coach in the Astros organization. He served in the same capacity with Lexington of the South Atlantic League in Prior to his tenure with Houston, Wiedman served area high schools in his hometown of Memphis. A four-year letterman in baseball at the University of Memphis, he posted a.290 career batting average, totaling 31 doubles, 21 home runs and 111 RBIs. Wiedman led the Tigers in average (.302), slugging percentage (.467), total bases (93), hits (60), RBIs (39) and home runs (8) as a sophomore. The 26- year-old graduated in 2010 with a bachelor s degree in Exercise Science. 9

7 RUBEN ALANIZ Pitcher Height: 6-4 Weight: 208 Born: 6/14/91 in McAllen, TX Resides: La Grulla, TX Acquired: Signed by the Astros as a non-drafted free agent in August Career Highlights: 2012 Entered the season ranked as Houston s No. 15 prospect by Baseball America. Named Lancaster Pitcher of the Month for April after he went 2-0 with a 2.90 ERA in fi ve starts. He walked seven and struck out 26 in 31.0 innings pitched for the month. Regressed as the season progressed, with a 4.31 ERA in six May starts and an 8.74 ERA in four June starts. Started just two games in July, in which he allowed fi ve earned runs in 6.2 innings pitched. Posted a 6.49 earned run average at home in the hitter s paradise The Hangar, and allowed a 4.27 ERA on the road Entered the season ranked as Houston s No. 15 prospect and as having the best curveball in the organization by Baseball America. Named Lexington Pitcher of the Month for June after he went 3-1 with a 2.28 ERA in fi ve starts. Also posted a strong August, going 1-1 with a 3.71 ERA in fi ve games, four of them starts. Of his 27 appearances, 21 were starts and six came out of the bullpen. As a starter, was 5-9 with a 4.25 ERA, while posting a 2-1 record with a 5.40 ERA in relief. Was better on the road (4-6, 3.88) than at home (3-4, 5.04) Led Greeneville in wins and strikeouts. Started the year by allowing two earned runs in 16 innings over his fi rst three starts from June 24-July 5. In back-to-back starts July 10 and 17, allowed a combined 16 earned runs on 17 hits in 3.1 innings. Aside from those two starts, went 6-2 with a 1.82 ERA on the season. Finished the season by giving up two earned runs in 17.2 innings pitched, winning his last three starts August In fi ve August starts went 3-2 with a 2.86 ERA. 8 JAKE BUCHANAN Pitcher Height: 6-0 Weight: 242 Born: 9/24/89 in Charlotte, NC Resides: Dallas, NC School: North Carolina State. Went 8-6 with a 3.86 ERA in 18 games and 17 starts as a junior for the Wolfpack in Walked 27 and struck out 96 over 105 innings. Posted 13 wins, fi ve complete games and three saves in his three seasons in Raleigh. Acquired: Selected by the Astros in the eighth round of the 2010 draft. Career Highlights: 2012 Started the season in Corpus Christi s rotation, making 19 starts before being moved to the bullpen after an outing on July 19. As a starter went 5-6 with a 5.00 ERA, walking 26 and striking out 74 in innings. Allowed four or more runs nine times in his 19 starts, including seven or more three times. May 12 vs. Frisco, took a no decision after he allowed one earned run on six hits in 7.2 IP. Lasted 8.1 innings May 23 vs. Arkansas to earn his second win of the season. Had six starts of 7.0 IP or more innings. Pitched in three games for Triple-A Oklahoma City from July 25-August 1. Overall as a reliever, went 0-3 with a 4.76 ERA in eight games Named the Astros Minor League Pitcher of the Year, fi nished 5-10 with a 3.80 ERA over 26 starts between Advanced-A Lancaster and Corpus Christi. Notched 104 strikeouts and 36 walks in innings. His composite ERA stood second among full-season Houston farmhands. Making all but one start for Lancaster, he led California League starters in fewest walks per nine innings (1.82) and ranked third in fewest base runners per nine innings (11.23). Also ranked within the circuit s top 10 in WHIP (1.21, 2nd), opponents average (.256, 4th), innings pitched (158.2, 5th) and ERA (3.91, 8th). Was one of only three pitchers in the loop to toss a complete-game shutout, allowing just four hits and three walks over nine innings in a 3-0 victory at Inland Empire May 1. Allowed just one home run for every innings pitched. Cal League average was one home run for every 9.48 innings pitched. Became the fi rst Lancaster hurler to start a minimum of 20 games and fi nish the season with an ERA below 4.00 since Brandon Webb accomplished the feat in 2001 (3.99 ERA, 28 GS). Was considerably more effective on the road (4-4, 2.17, 14 starts) than he was at wind-blown and hitter-friendly ClearChannel Stadium (1-6, 6.86, 11 starts). Turned in a stellar April, going 2-1 with a 1.91 ERA in four starts. A California League All-Star, was the pitcher of record in the Cal League s 6-1 win over the Carolina League June 21 at Modesto s John Thurman Field. Tossed an inning of perfect relief in the third, striking out one. Was impressive in his Double-A debut September 1 at Whataburger Field, limiting Frisco to a run on six hits over seven innings Allowed just three homers in 14 starts for the ValleyCats, covering 61.0 innings (1 HR for every IP). In a four-start stretch from July 21 through August 7, went 2-1 with a 1.64 ERA. Notched a career-best eight strikeouts over fi ve innings while allowing just one run in an August 30 start vs. Hudson Valley. Originally selected by the Nationals in the supplemental round (49th overall) of the 2007 draft. Career Highlights: 2012 Notched a multi-home run game on June 26 vs. Birmingham, went 3-for-3 with four runs, two home runs and three RBIs. Drove in a season-high four runs July 3 at Chattanooga, after he went 2-for-4 with a triple. Hit.500 as a pinch-hitter (8-for-16) with four RBIs. Played 87 games in right fi eld, fi ve in left fi eld and was the designated hitter eight times. 10 ERIK CASTRO Infielder Height: 6-4 Weight: 234 Born: 11/13/87 in Los Angeles, CA Bats/Throws: L/R Resides: Fallbrook, CA School: San Diego State. Named second team all-mountain West Conference as a junior in 2009 after he hit.382 with 11 home runs and 56 RBIs, including a.400 batting average in conference games. Played over 50 games at catcher in his two years at SDSU, catching now-big league hurlers Stephen Strasburg and Addison Reed. Had not caught before his sophomore season as an Aztec in As a sophomore he hit.259 with fi ve home runs and 29 RBIs in 51 games. Played his freshman season at Arizona in 2007, hitting.253 with four doubles and 12 RBIs in 40 games (21 starts), mostly at third base. Acquired: Selected by the Astros in the 10th round of the 2009 draft. Career Highlights: 2012 Led the JetHawks in RBIs (108) and tied for the team lead in hits (138). Made a start on April 26 against Rancho Cucamonga, while the rest of his starts came in 13 consecutive appearances from May 12-July 19. Had his best month of the season in August when he posted a 3.86 ERA and three saves in eight relief appearances Used exclusively as a relief pitcher, completed his fi rst full season as a hurler.
