George Springer and Domingo Santana clubbed back-to-back home runs in the eighth to break a scoreless deadlock. Springer leads the Minor Leagues with 11 home runs. Corpus Christi has won six of its last seven and a victory tonight would give the Hooks their fifth series victory of the season. Foltynewicz, the 19th overall pick in the 2010 draft, retired 11 of the first 12 batters he faced, fanning nine. A one-out walk by Rico Noel in the first and a lead-off single by Cody Decker in the fifth was all the Missions could muster against the 21-year-old out of Minooka, Illinois. Foltynewicz, who featured a fastball that ranged from 97 to 99 mph on the ballpark radar gun, struck out nine - one shy of his career mark. David Martinez permitted two hits and one walk over 3.1 innings of relief. He leads the circuit with a 0.87 ERA. Signed by HOU as a non-drafted FA in August 2009, he went 6-2 w/ 5.04 ERA in 17 GS for Lancaster last year...70 Ks, 26 BBs in innings. Alaniz was the JetHawks Pitcher of the Month for April, going 2-0 w/ 2.90 ERA in 5 GS. Tabbed by Baseball America as the Astros No.15 prospect entering the 2012 season, the La Grulla native was 7-10 w/ 4.44 ERA in 27 APP (21 GS) for Lexington in Ks, 38 BBs in innings. Baseball America also identified Alaniz as having the best curveball in the organization at that time. He was Lexington s June POM for a 3-1 record & 2.28 ERA in 5 starts. DRAWING A BLANK: The Hooks enter tonight s contest with a Minor League best 2.49 ERA. Corpus Christi s six shutouts only trail the Birmingham Barons of the Southern League who have authored 7. Hooks hurlers have issued just 66 walks - which currently stands as 4th lowest in the minors. No. 1 is the Savannah Sand Gnats, who feature a 3.14 ERA and have struck out 259 batters against 39 walks over IP. Four Corpus Christi arms - David Martinez (0.87), Jake Buchanan (1.31), Nick Tropeano (1.91) and Asher Wojciechowski (2.08) rank within the Texas League s top 10 in ERA. This tandem starting rotation has produced 13 performances in which the first starter lasted 5 innings without giving up a run: Martinez 4x Buchanan 3x Bobby Doran and Wojo 2x Mike Foltynewicz and Carlos Quevedo 1x. Wojo made his Triple-A debut last Thursday and tossed 4 innings of 1-run ball against Nashville. He is scheduled to start for Oklahoma City this Thursday opposite Tacoma at Bricktown Ballpark. BUCK STOPS HERE: A few minutes before first pitch yesterday, the Texas League announced its pitcher and player of the week for April 29 thru May 6. Jake Buchanan took home the pitcher honors after recording 8.2 scoreless over 2 appearances. He notched the victory in a start on Tuesday at Whataburger Field, tossing 5 frames of 3-hit ball against the RockHounds. Buchanan did not walk a batter and struck out 4. In Saturday s series opener here in San Antonio, he needed just 23 pitches to record 11 consecutive outs to close out the game. Buchanan, who allowed just 1 fly ball in that outing, features a GO/AO ratio of He ranks third in the league in ERA (1.31) and batting average against (.169). Buchanan is averaging 6.12 runners per 9 IP, and 0.72 BB per 9 IP, which ranks No. 1 & 2, respectively among circuit starters. HOT SPRINGS: OF George Springer is locked in. Springer, who was the opening act yesterday of Corpus Christi s first backto-back home run display, currently leads the Minors in long balls (11). He also paces the Texas League in RBIs (27), extrabase hits (20), runs (25), total bases (76) and strikeouts (40). Springer ranks second in slugging percentage (.644) and is tied for third in walks (15). He has hit safely in 15 of his last 18 games, batting.328 with 17 runs, 5 doubles, 8 home runs and 16 RBIs.
