2 PAGE 2 PRIMED IN THE PEN: RHP Nick Tropeano made the start Wednesday against the RockHounds. He yielded three consecutive hits to open the second. Following singles by David Freitas and Beau Taylor, Dusty Coleman doubled and Chad Oberacker hit a sac fly, putting the Hounds up 2-0. Tropeano then retired 12 of the final 13 men he faced but suffered the loss as CC fell 3-1. A fifth-round pick in the 2011 draft, Tropeano had struggled in his prior 4 appearances, featuring a 9.19 ERA &.359 batting average against. He permitted 1 home run in each of those contests. Prior to this downturn Tropeano had recorded 4 saves in as many chances and featured a 1.70 ERA thru his first 9 appearances. As a second starter, Tropeano has authored a 2.35 ERA, striking out 24 against 5 walks in 23.0 innings. He is 5-for-5 in save opportunities. Tropeano entered the 2013 season as MLB.com s 9th-ranked Astros prospect and the owner of the system s best changeup, according to Baseball America. In innings split between Class-A Lexington and Advanced-A Lancaster last summer, Tropeano struck out 166 and walked 47 in 26 starts plus one relief appearance. He went 12-7 with a 3.02 ERA in 27 outings (26 starts). The 22-year-old led all Houston minor league pitchers in strikeouts and paced full-season farmhands in ERA. The strikeout total also rated second among Class-A hurlers and placed sixth in all of minor league baseball. Tabbed a Mid-Season South Atlantic League All-Star and at the time of his promotion, Tropeano made his California League debut on July 1 and tossed 8.0 innings, allowing 1 unearned run while striking out 9. He made a pair of playoff starts for the JetHawks, going 0-0 while yielding 4 earned runs in 12.0 innings. Tropeano pitched in 11 games for Mesa in the Arizona Fall League, posting a 3.00 ERA and striking 18 in 15.0 innings. In his career, he has struck out 9.8/9IP and has a K/BB ratio of Tropeano was named a 2nd Team All-American by NCBWA in his junior year at SUNY Stony Brook. He was 12-1 with a 1.84 ERA as the Seawolves won a school-record 42 games SANUDO ADDED TO PEN: Gonzalo Sanudo, a 21-year old right-hander out of Mexico, joins the Hooks today from extended spring training. The Astros acquired Sanudo in late March from Minnesota in exchange for 3B/C Mike Kvasnicka, who was drafted by Houston as the 33rd overall selection in Sanudo, listed at 6-3, 235, is 2-1 with a 3.34 ERA in 27 career games in the Gulf Coast League. RHP Jorge De Leon, placed on the inactive list, has returned to the Dominican Republic due to a death in the family. He s expected to rejoin the club Tuesday. ON THE ROAD AGAIN: With their win Saturday at San Antonio, the Hooks improved their road record to 16-13, second best in the Texas League (Springfield, 15-12). Corpus Christi has won three straight road games and six of its last seven. In those seven games, the Hooks have outscored their opposition 42-25, hitting.294 (70-for-238) and posting a 3.20 (21 ER in 59 IP) team ERA. Overall away from Whataburger Field, the team has hit.251 led by Erik Castro (.300), Rene Garcia (.308) and Jose Martinez, who has gone 8-for-13 in three road games since joining the club. DOWN THE STRETCH THEY COME: Corpus Christi enters tonight s action with a 3.0 game lead over the RoughRiders and a 5.5 game advantage on San Antonio for the top spot in the Texas League South. With 9 contests remaining in the first half, any combination of Hooks wins and Frisco losses totaling 7, clinches a playoff berth for Corpus Christi. The 2006 Hooks, who went on to claim the Texas League Championship, is the only squad in club history to win the first half. MEYER STREAKING: 3B Jonathan Meyer enters tonight s game having hit safely in 12 consecutive games - the longest current hitting streak in the league. SINGLETON RETURNS: Houston s No.1 prospect, Jon Singleton, is 2-for-14(.143) with a double, 2 RBIs, 1 walk and 6 in 6 games with the Hooks. Singleton joined Corpus Christi on Wednesday following a 6-game stint with Quad Cities of the Midwest League where he hit.286 with 2 doubles, 3 home runs, 5 RBIs, 4 walks and 5 strikeouts. Following a 50-game suspension to start the season, Singleton, belted the first pitch he saw over the fence in left-center at the River Bandits Modern Woodmen Park. He had been working out at Houston s training complex in Kissimmee, Fla. Traded from the Phillies, along with RHP Jarred Cosart, for OF Hunter Pence in July 2011, Singleton hit.284 with 27 doubles, 4 triples, 21 home runs and 79 RBIs for the Hooks last year. He led the club in games (131), runs (94), hits (131), doubles, home runs, RBIs, walks (88) and slugging percentage (.497). A Mid & Post Season Texas League All-Star, Singleton tied for the league lead in runs, ranked 2nd in walks and slotted 4th in extra-base hits (52) and total bases (229). A two-time TL Player of the Week, he featured a club-best 3 multi-homer games. Singleton s 88 walks established a new season-high in club history. He became the first Hook to draw more than 70 walks since Drew Sutton coaxed 76 in MAXWELL REHAB: Astros CF Justin Maxwell is 0-for-13 with a run, an RBI, 1 walk, 6 strikeouts and a stolen base in 4 rehab appearances with the Hooks. Placed on the disabled list April 24 after suffering a fracture in his left hand, Maxwell is batting.234 with 1 home run and 6 RBIs in 20 games for Houston this season. Claimed on waivers from the Yankees last April, he hit.229 with 46 runs scored, 13 doubles, 3 triples, a club-best 18 home runs and 53 RBIs in 124 contests for the 2012 Astros. Maxwell homered as a pinch-hitter in his first plate appearance with the club - April 9 vs. Atlanta. He played in 2 rehab games (loose bodies in left ankle) for the Hooks in July, going 2-for-8 with 2 runs scored, a double and 1 RBI. Originally signed by Washington as a 4th-round selection in the 2005 draft, Maxwell owns a.261 batting average, 74 home runs and 250 RBIs in 478 minor-league games. The 29-year old hit.299 with 20 doubles, 16 home runs, 71 RBIs and 24 steals at the University of Maryland. Texas selected Maxwell as a junior in the 10th round of the 2004 draft but he did not sign.
