Matthes, batting eighth in the order, had plated seven after his first three at-bats. He sent a 3-2 pitch from Aaron West onto the berm in left for a three-run blast in the third. Matthes paved the way toward a five-run fifth by belting his third grand slam of the season - and second against the Hooks - off David Rollins. Matthes capped his career day with a two-out, two-run single to left field in the ninth. West, making his first appearance with Corpus Christi since late April, issued four walks in 1.2 innings. Ruben Alaniz and David Rollins combined to walk four batters. Four of the eight free passes blossomed into runs for the RockHounds. Corpus Christi received all of its production via solo home runs. Telvin Nash opened the third with his third home run in as many nights. Leo Heras, seeing his first action in two weeks, was the next batter and belted a 2-2 pitch over the right-field bullpen. Delino DeShields, Jr., hit his sixth bomb of the season, a lead-off poke in the sixth. Andrew Aplin began the ninth with a missile to right field off lefty Frank Gailey. 2 PAGE 2 APPEL BOUND FOR CC Last year s No. 1 overall pick RHP Mark Appel will join the Hooks from Lancaster, the Astros officially announced today. The Stanford product is Corpus Christi s probable starter Wednesday against San Antonio. RHP Chris Devenski is slated to follow Appel in a tandem start. Appel, rated the 13th best prospect in all of baseball by MLB.com, went 2-5 with a 9.74 ERA in 12 starts for the JetHawks. His last start for Lancaster came Thursday, when he worked six innings against Stockton. Appel picked up his second victory after he allowed 2 earned runs on 5 hits with no walks and 7 strikeouts. Following an off-season appendectomy that sidelined him for much of Spring Training, he broke camp with the JetHawks, but returned the Astros training facility in Kissimmee, Fla. for just over a month after an April 23 start. Appel made his return to Lancaster May 31 and later strung together 3 straight starts in which he worked 5 innings and allowed 3 earned runs June 22-July 4, going 1-2 with a 5.40 ERA. Owner of the Houston minor league system s best slider entering the 2014 season according to Baseball America, Appel was a two-time Louisville Slugger first team All-American at Stanford and left Palo Alto as the program s all-time strikeout leader. During his 2013 senior season, he went 10-4 with a 2.12 ERA and 4 complete games en route to first team All-Pac 12 conference honors. Appel was drafted 3 times: in the 15th round out of Monte Vista High School in Danville, Calif. by Detroit in 2009, eighth overall by Pittsburgh in 2012 and first overall by Houston last year. He became one of just 17 players in history to be selected in the first round of two different June drafts. WEILAND ADDED TO PEN RHP Kyle Weiland joins the Hooks today from Oklahoma City s disabled list. Weiland, working his way back from a shoulder injury, has made 9 appearances (2 starts) between the Gulf Coast League and Tri-City, going 2-0 with a 0.75 ERA. The Austin resident has struck out 11 against 2 walks in 12.0 IP. Weiland was acquired by Houston, along with IF Jed Lowrie, for RHP Mark Melancon in a trade with Boston in December He was originally a 3rd-round pick of the Red Sox in 2008 out of the University of Notre Dame. Weiland went 0-3 with a 7.66 ERA in 7 games (5 starts) for Boston in He won a spot on the Astros 2012 starting rotation but made only 3 starts before being shutdown due to injury. Weiland missed all of 2013 after multiple shoulder surgeries revealed an infection in the biceps tendon. During his recovery, Weiland attended classes at the University of Texas, which he's applying towards a degree in anthropology from Notre Dame. His last minor league action was at Triple-A Pawtucket in Weiland posted an 8-10 record and a 3.58 ERA in 24 International League starts, striking out 126 against 55 walks in IP. To make room on Corpus Christi s roster, Aaron West placed on the inactive list. SMITH ON STAND-BY RHP Kyle Smith is slated to follow Jankowski on the mound tonight. Smith is 4-3 with a 3.58 ERA in 14 outings (11 starts) for the Hooks, striking out 74 against 17 walks in 70.1 IP. He earned the start Tuesday in San Antonio and absorbed the loss, allowing 3 runs on 8 hits in 5.2 IP. Smith surrendered a 2-run shot off the bat of Casey McElroy. The first 9 home runs he allowed were solo blasts. Smith picked up the win on July 16 against Midland, tossing 5.2 IP of 1-run ball. He limited the Hounds to 3 hits and 2 walks while striking out 5. His last relief appearances was July 10 at Frisco: 2.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K. Smith beat Springfield when he tossed 6.0 IP of shutout ball. He allowed 4 hits and 1 walk while striking out 6. Smith, acquired by the Astros in a trade with Kansas City for OF Justin Maxwell last July, took the loss in the Texas League All- Star Game, allowing a two-run home run to Springfield s Cody Stanley in two innings of work with two strikeouts, as the North Division won 3-1. He got the start June 19 against Frisco and took a no-decision after he yielded 5 earned runs on 8 hits in 6 innings. It snapped a stretch of 6 straight appearances in which Smith allowed 1 earned run or less, going 2-0 with a 1.36 ERA in 33 IP. Smith earned his first Double-A victory May 22 at Dickey-Stephens Park. He tossed 6.0 innings of 1-run ball and held the Travs to 4 hits, 1 hit batsman and 1 walk while striking out 5. Smith was tagged for 10 ER on 15 hits and 4 home runs in his first 2 starts for a ERA. Smith was originally taken by Kansas City in the 4th round of the 2011 draft out of high school in Lantana, Fla. #NASHMASH Telvin Nash belted his 3rd home run in as many games last night. Nash now has a Texas League leading 18 homers on the year. Nash is hitting.323 with 10 home runs,19 RBIs and a OPS in 19 July games.
