Reed accounted for 4 runs Saturday night as the Hooks surged past Northwest Arkansas 7-2 at Arvest Ballpark. Westwood permitted just 1 run and it came in the first inning. After escaping a bases-loaded jam to end the frame, the 24-year-old right-hander would permit 3 base runners the rest of the way. Westwood fanned a season-high seven batters against one walk, throwing 68 of 102 pitches for strikes. Corpus Christi leveled the game in the 2nd. Jack Mayfield worked a lead-off walk and stole second base. With 2 away, Christian Binford yielded an infield single to Chan-Jong Moon. Raul Mondesi s throw to first was wide and sailed into foul ground, allowing Mayfield to score. Singles by Reed and Mayfield began the 4th. Leo Heras surveyed a sac bunt and Mier hit a fly ball to right field, plating Reed. Moon made it 3-1 with a 2-out single into left field. After allowing a pair of 1st-inning runs on May 20, he responded by retiring the last 12 men he faced. Westwood has won a 3 outings vs. the Naturals this year, surrendering just 3 runs in 16 innings for a 1.69 ERA. He owns 13 strikeouts against 3 walks, holding the Naturals to a.211 batting average. SHARP STICK: A.J. Reed drove in 3 runs and ran his hit streak to 9 games last night. Reed has hit safely in 10 of 11 contests, batting.418 with 7 runs, 4 doubles, 1 home run and 6 RBIs. He leads the minor leagues in RBIs (107), total bases (270) and full-season OPS (1.055) while ranking 2nd in home runs (29) and runs scored (97). As a Hook, Reed is hitting.441 with men in scoring position. MOUND WOES: Despite Saturday s strong showing, Corpus Christi s ERA (3.59) sits 2nd in the Texas League. Tulsa owns the top spot with a 3.56 mark. From Opening Day to the All-Star Break, the Hooks fashioned a 3.04 ERA, which ranked 2nd among the 30 Double-A clubs. Over the first 3 months of the season, Hooks pitchers yielded 48 home runs and boasted a 1.23 WHIP while averaging 2.68 strikeouts per walk. Since the calendar flipped to July, Corpus Christi has posted a 4.54 ERA, which slots 29th in Double-A. During this period, the Hooks have yielded 41 home runs and a 1.46 WHIP. ON STANDBY: RHP Vince Velasquez is available to pitch out of the bullpen tonight. Velasquez bounced back from a rough outing against Midland with a scoreless 9th Wednesday at Dickey-Stephens Park. On Sunday at Whataburger Field, he yielded a 3-run home run to Wade Kirkland. Velasquez returned to the Hooks August 5 at San Antonio, authoring 3.0 scoreless innings en route to the victory. The hard-throwing right-hander has won all 4 of his decisions with Corpus Christi, posting a 2.03 ERA in 8 games (5 starts). He has struck out 43 and walked 12 in 31.0 Texas League innings. Prior to being optioned to Double-A, Velasquez tossed 2.2 hitless innings of scoreless relief for the Astros August 1 vs. Arizona. The 23-year-old from Pomona, CA, pitched a shutout inning at Kansas City July 26, striking out 2. His last Houston start was a victory over Boston on July 21 at Minute Maid Park, yielding 3 runs on 7 hits in 6.0 innings. Velasquez fanned 7 and did not issue a walk. He logged a 2-week stay with the Hooks prior to that start, but was limited to side work and live batting practice. Velasquez stands 1-1 with a 3.67 ERA in 9 appearances (7 starts) for the Astros.
