Corpus Christi s first hit was a lead-off double by Drew Ferguson in the sixth inning. Kelly, who struck out nine and walked three, retired 22 of the final 24 men he faced. The 24-year-old right-hander threw 72 of 107 pitches for strikes. Kelly has worked seven innings or more in three of his last five starts. Rafael De Paula pitched the ninth, yielding a lead-off infield single to Garrett Stubbs. De Paula faced three in the frame thanks to a double play. Hooks right-hander Brock Dykxhoorn battled through 5 2/3 innings. The first three Missions to bat in the second scored. An RBI double to right field off the bat of Ty France was the pivotal swing in the sequence. Dykxhoorn was chased with two away in the sixth when Stephen McGee lined a two-bagger into the left-field gap, scoring Fernando Perez. Riley Ferrell finished the game for the Hooks, retiring seven of the eight batters he faced. 2 PAGE 2 ROSTER UPDATE: Following the conclusion of Monday s series opener in San Antonio, the Astros released LHP Michael Freeman and RHP Eric Peterson. Houston also released RHP Keegan Yuhl, who began the year at Triple-A Fresno. Yuhl was Corpus Christi s 2016 Pitcher of the Year, going 8-3 with a 3.04 ERA in 19 games (17 GS). The Astros have activated Antonio Nunez from Corpus Christi s disabled list. Nunez is hitting.296 with 2 doubles, 1 triple, 1 home run and 8 RBIs in 24 games. He missed 9 games after being struck on the right hand by a pitch May 5 at Midland. LHP Albert Minnis joins Corpus Christi today from extended spring training. Minnis, selected by Houston in the 25th round in 2013 out of Wichita State, retired all 3 batters he faced in Grapefruit League action before being sidelined due to injury. He spent the first 3 months of 2016 on the disabled list before going 3-1 with a 4.46 ERA in 24 games between Fresno, Corpus Christi, Lancaster and Tri-City. Minnis allowed 10 runs on 18 hits in 19.0 innings with the Hooks, striking out 11 against 6 walks. In his 4-year career, Minnis averages 2.82 groundouts per fly out. LHP Sean Stutzman returns to the Hooks this afternoon. Stutzman, who pitched collegiately at Dallas Baptist, opened the year in extended spring training before joining Corpus Christi in mid-april. He appeared in 2 games for the Hooks, allowing 1 run on 4 hits in 5.0 innings. Stutzman struck out 8 and did not issue a walk. Acquired by Houston as a non-drafted free agent last June, the 23-year-old lefty was then summoned to the Pacific Coast League. Stutzman logged a 3.12 ERA over 4 assignments with Fresno, surrendering 10 hits and 5 walks in 8.2 IP. He last appeared May 6 at Colorado Springs. THE HITMAN: OF Drew Ferguson s lead-off double in the sixth inning Monday night extended his hit streak to a team-best 12 games. Ferguson is batting.348 with 4 doubles, 2 home runs, 5 RBIs and a.412 on-base average during this surge, which is the 2nd-longest active streak in the Texas League. Chuck Taylor of Arkansas has hit safely in his last 17 assignments. STUCK IN NEUTRAL: Monday night marked the 2nd time this season Corpus Christi was held to 2 hits. Midland accomplished the feat in a 9-0 whitewash of the Hooks April 24 at Whataburger Field. Corpus Christi has now been blanked 3 times this year: Apr 13 vs. ARK (9-0), Apr 24 vs. MID (9-0) & May 15 at SA (4-0). The Hooks have managed no more than 1 run in 4 of their last 8 games. TOUGH DRAW: The first-place Missions penned their Texas League best 5th shutout victory last night. San Antonio owns a 1.87 May ERA, the best in Minor League Baseball. The Missions, who stand 12-2 this month, are averaging 2.51 strikeouts per walk while holding the TL to a.183 batting average and 8 home runs. San Antonio starters have worked a minimum of 6.0 IP in 10 of the last 11 games. The starting staff has allowed more than 3 earned runs in a game only once this month. AXE TO GRIND: The Missions have won the first 5 games of the season series with Corpus Christi. The Hooks dominated San Antonio in 2016, winning 23 of the 28 bouts. Corpus Christi went 11-3 in the Alamo City last season. The last time the Missions won 5 in a row against their I-37 rival was 2014 when San Antonio claimed 6 consecutive contests June 16-July 23. The Hooks went opposite the Missions in 2014.
