Corpus Christi fell in game one 4-3 in nine innings before responding with a 2-0 win in game two. The first game saw the RoughRiders win in extra innings. With two out in the bottom of the ninth, Kellin Deglan hit a single up the middle to score Joe Jackson and end the ballgame. The single came off of Brendan McCurry who went 1 2/3 innings, yielding three hits, the winning run, and striking out two batters. Evan Grills got the start and went seven innings, surrendering eight hits, three runs, and striking out five batters. Chase McDonald hit his eleventh homer of the year to left-center field and finished the game with three hits in total. Eight of the nine Hooks hitters had at least one hit in the loss. Game two was played much differently. Alex Bregman provided the only offense with his two-run shot off of Frisco starter David Perez in the third. That would be all the offense starter Edison Frias would need. He went six shutout innings, conceding two hits, three walks, and fanning three Riders. Aaron West would allow one walk in the seventh but ultimately close it down to earn his eighth save. 2 PAGE 2 DIVISION CHAMPS: With the Hooks defeating the RoughRiders yesterday in game two of the doubleheader, the Hooks locked up their second straight first-half division title and secured postseason play for the fifth time in the last six years. Corpus Christi still holds a five-and-a-half game lead over second-place Frisco with only four games left in the half. SHUTDOWN KINGS: Yesterday s 2-0 victory in game two was the ninth shutout recorded by the Hooks pitching staff this season. Corpus Christi has two more than that of second-place Tulsa who has seven scoreless games credited to their staff. STILL HEATING UP: While the Hooks did lose their five-game winning streak yesterday, game two saw the Hooks improve their record to since the start of May and overall. Corpus Christi is tied with the Lynchburg Hillcats of the South Atlantic League for the third-best record in Minor League Baseball behind Reading of the Eastern League (48-19) and Visalia of the California League (45-22). STREAKY HITTERS: Three Hooks hitters currently have hitting streaks of at least five games. Alejandro Garcia, who has a.310 average since being promoted to AA, has hit safely in five straight. Two of the highest average hitters in the Texas League (Teoscar Hernandez and Alex Bregman) are on six and eleven game streaks respectively.
