1 Tulsa Drillers (7-4, 37-43) at Corpus Christi Hooks (5-7, 53-29) Wednesday, July 8, 2015 Whataburger Field Corpus Christi, TX 7:05 p.m. ON THE RECORD: Home Road Series 5-1 Sweeps L 3 Streak 1-4 Last Last 10 IN A FOG: On a soupy Tuesday night in the Ozarks, the Cardinals became the first club to sweep Corpus Christi this year, fashioning a 1-0 victory over the Hooks at Hammons Field. Cards right-hander Andrew Morales left the game with two away in the 6th after being struck in the left arm by a line drive off the bat of Jack Mayfield. Ronnie Shaban was plucked from the Springfield bullpen and netted a strikeout to end the inning, stranding 2 on base. Shaban retired all 7 men he faced before giving way to Kyle Barraclough, who employed a double play in the 9th to help garner his 6th save. Springfield s run came in the 3rd off Ruben Alaniz. Charlie Tilson worked a walk and later scored via a 2-out single by Jonathan Rodriguez. The inning ended when Patrick Wisdom was thrown out at home plate by 2B Mayfield on an attempted double steal. Hooks LF Jon Kemmer slammed the door in the 2nd, gunning down Derek Gibson who was trying to score on a David Washington base hit. Alaniz worked around 9 hits in 7.0 innings. He stranded 6 on base, including Aledmys Diaz and Wisdom who notched a 1-out double and triple, respectively, over the Cards final 2 turns at bat. 2 PAGE 2 IMPRESSIVE FIRST IMPRESSION: IF Jack Mayfield turned in a dazzling Double-A debut last night, going 4-for-4 at the plate. His singles output accounted for half of Corpus Christi s hits. Prior to joining the Hooks late Monday night, Mayfield, a California League Mid Season All-Star, was hitting.303 with 46 runs, 13 doubles, 4 triples, 7 home runs and 43 RBIs in 66 games for Lancaster to begin the season. The 24-year-old from Del Rio, TX, owned 4 hits in his final 8 at-bats for the JetHawks, scoring 4 runs while driving in 2. Mayfield logged 53 games at shortstop while manning second on 13 occasions for Lancaster. Mayfield, a non-drafted free agent pick up of the Astros in June 2013, hit.282 with 31 doubles, 2 triples, 9 home runs and 55 RBIs in 105 games between Quad Cities and Lancaster. Made California League debut at the beginning of June and went on to hit.343 with 12 doubles, 4 homers and 20 RBIs during the month of July. He batted.345 with 4 runs, 3 doubles, 1 big fly and 4 RBIs during the playoffs as the JetHawks captured the CL crown. Mayfield played his college ball at the University of Oklahoma, serving 4 seasons for the Sooners. He was the MVP of the 2013 Kleberg Bank College Classic at Whataburger Field, going 5-for-13 with a home run, 3 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. Mayfield led the 2013 Academic All-Big 12 Baseball Team with a 4.0 GPA. BLAST FROM THE PAST: Last night, RHP Ruben Alaniz completed 7.0 innings for the first time since a 2013 Independence Day start at Hammons Field. Alaniz blanked the Cards that night and was touched for 2 hits and 3 walks, while fanning 4. Springfield spoiled the performance thanks to an Xavier Scruggs home run off current Driller Jorge De Leon, sending the Cardinals to a 2-1 walk-off win before a franchise-record crowd of 11,818. REHAB REPORT: Houston RHP Chad Qualls authored a successful rehab start last night, throwing 6 of 9 pitches for strikes in a perfect 1st inning. Qualls, who has been on the disabled list since June 26 due to a pinched nerve in his neck, induced a pair of grounders and a lineout. Qualls is 1-4 with a 5.11 ERA in 29 appearances for the Astros this year, recording 4 saves in 6 opportunities. The Houston reliever has struck out 23 against 7 walks in 24.2 IP, holding the opposition to 4 home runs and a.250 batting average. Qualls faced 2 batters in his last Astros appearance, June 24 in Anaheim. He surrendered a Taylor Featherston walk-off single in the 11th for a 2-1 Angels victory. Qualls, who has pitched 12 seasons in the big leagues, is serving his 2nd stint with the Astros after working 6 years with 7 different teams. He was plucked by Houston in the 2nd round in 2000 draft out of the University of Nevada. Qualls, an Austin, TX, resident, was a key cog in the Astros bullpen, which carried the club to a National League Championship series in 2004 and a World Series appearance the following year. V SQUARED RETURNING: In an effort to limit his workload, the Astros are sending RHP Vince Velasquez back to Corpus Christi, Houston manager A.J. Hinch announced last night. Battling defending American League Cy Young winner Corey Kluber on Tuesday, Velasquez suffered his first major league loss despite allowing 2 runs over 6.1 innings. The 23-year-old stands 0-1 with 3.94 ERA in 6 starts for Houston. Totaling his time with the Hooks, Velasquez has pitched 58.1 innings this year. He accrued a career-high IP in 2013 and worked 63.2 frames last season. Velasquez is scheduled to return to the Astros rotation following the all-star break. DRAWING A BLANK: Last night, the Hooks were shutout for the 2nd time in the last 5 games. Corpus Christi had been blanked twice in the first 77 games of the season. Despite being outscored by 4 runs (13 to 9) in the series at Hammons Field, there was little offensive comparison between the Hooks and Cardinals. Corpus Christi hit.235 with 4 doubles and 2 home runs, while striking out 25 times against 5 walks. Springfield batted at a.304 clip with 8 doubles, 1 triple and 2 homers, and worked 10 walks against 14 strikeouts. The Hooks scored more than half of their runs for the series in the 1st inning of Sunday s opener thanks to bases-loaded hit batsman and a grand slam from Conrad Gregor. DOUBLE TROUBLE: Appropriately, Springfield employed a double play to end the game last night. Corpus Christi s offense accounted for 11 twin-killings during the final 5 games of the road trip. The Hooks have now grounded into 77 double plays this season, which tops the Texas League. Midland is next in line at 66. The Hounds and Corpus Christi boast the highest on-base averages in the circuit at.353 and.352 respectively.
