Luis Cruz got the start for Corpus Christi and was battered to the tune of nine hits in 5.0 innings. Six of those Naturals knocks went for extra bases. Cheslor Cuthbert began the barrage with a lead-off shot in the third. Juan Graterol s two-run blast capped a four-run second and Micah Gibbs made it 6-0 with a solo poke in the fourth. For both Graterol and Gibbs, it was their first long balls of the season. The Naturals added what proved to be a key insurance run in the seventh. Justin Trapp worked a one-out walk and went to third on a an errant pick-off throw from Alex Sogard. Orlando Calixte s sac fly to right brought him home. J.C. Sulbaran allowed four base runners thru the first five innings. Corpus Christi finally broke through in the sixth thanks to a two-run home run by Matt Duffy and a two-out RBI single off the bat of Jio Mier. With two on, Telvin Nash laced a line drive into right field but Ethan Chapman raced to his left and made a sensational diving catch to save two runs and end the frame. In the eighth, singles by Duffy and Joe Sclafani ended Matt Murray s night, forcing Malcom Culver into the game. A hit batter and a bases-loaded walk by Mier made it 7-4 NWA. Nash and Delino DeShields, Jr., were retired on consecutive pitches to leave them loaded. Shirley tossed 6.0 shutout innings on Wednesday at Dickey-Stephens Park in North Little Rock, retiring 18 of the 20 batters he faced. The lefty is 5-2 with a 1.51 ERA in 10 appearances (7 starts). Shirley has fanned 51 and walked 12 in 47.2 innings. He has permitted 3 home runs and a.178 batting average against. Shirley slots 2nd in the TL in ERA, BAA and WHIP (0.88), while ranking 3rd in strikeouts. Shirley is the 2nd consecutive Hooks hurler to win the award. RHP Mike Hauschild was honored last week. LONG STORY: Its been tough sledding for Hooks pitchers over the last 11 games. Since May 13, Corpus Christi has surrendered 21 home runs - the most in the minors.
