George Springer and Michael Burgess both cracked two homers with Springer notching the Hooks first grand slam of the season in the fifth. Springer s first blast came in the third and was followed up with a Domingo Santana long ball - marking the second time that pair struck for back-to-back home runs. The Travs owned a 4-0 after their two turns at-bat. Corpus Christi starter Nick Tropeano yielded seven hits thru his first two innings - with three going for extra bases, including a solo blast by C.J. Cron. Tropeano settled in, allowing just one hit thru the next three frames en route to his first Double-A triumph. Bobby Doran crafted four scoreless innings, striking out two, to register his first save. The Hooks enter tonight s contest against the Naturals having won five of their last six. He did not allow a hit thru 5 innings Friday night against the Naturals, working around 3 walks while striking out 2. Foltynewicz has not allowed an earned run in 4 of his 5 outings, including a 3-inning save May 19 at Midland. He also notched the save May 11 at Frisco, spreading 2 hits and 1 unearned run over 4 frames. Poorest outing with the Hooks was May 15 against San Antonio when the Missions got to him for 3 runs on 3 walks in 4 innings. One of their 3 hits was a solo home run by Johan Limonta. Foltynewicz shined in his Double-A debut with a five-inning, one-hit performance May 6 in San Antonio. He retired 11 of the first 12 batters he faced, fanning nine. A one-out walk by Rico Noel in the first and a lead-off single by Cody Decker in the fifth was all the Missions could muster against the 21-year-old out of Minooka, Illinois. Foltynewicz, who featured a fastball that ranged from 97 to 99 mph on the ballpark radar gun, struck out nine - one shy of his career mark. Foltynewicz joined Corpus Christi from Lancaster where he went 1-0 with a 3.87 ERA in 7 appearances (5 starts). He struck out 29 against 14 walks in 26.0 IP. The club went 27-for-73 (.370) with runners in scoring position. Meanwhile, Corpus Christi s pitching staff posted an ERA of 3.33, striking out 34 batters against 20 walks. SPRINGER STRIKES: OF George Springer had not homered in his last 10 games heading into Memorial Day. That changed in his second at-bat. Facing Matt Oye, Springer worked the count full before depositing a pitch over the Goodwill Zone in left field. His 2nd career grand slam accounted for his minor-league best 15th home run of the season. He and Xavier Scruggs of the Springfield Cardinals lead the Texas League with 40 RBIs. Springer s OPS places 3rd in the Double-A ranks. RENE REACHING: C Rene Garcia went 2-for-5 with a walk and 2 runs scored out of the 2-hole yesterday. Garcia has now reached base safely in his last 27 games, representing the longest on-base streak in the circuit. In 29 contests overall, he is batting.316 with 15 runs scored, 9 doubles, 2 home runs, 14 RBIs and an on-base percentage of.362. Garcia has hit safely in 25 of those games. FIELDS HEADS TO OKC: Astros reliever Josh Fields has concluded his rehab stint with the Hooks. He featured a 3.00 ERA over 5 appearances for Corpus Christi, striking out 4 in 6.0 frames without walking a batter. Fields retired 8 of the first 9 batters he faced with the Hooks. Fields, currently on Houston s disabled list with a strained right forearm, continues his rehab work in Oklahoma City. He began his rehab with Quad Cities of the Midwest League. The first overall pick in the 2012 Rule 5 Draft worked 2 scoreless innings May 13 against Peoria. Fields made the start May 10 opposite Cedar Rapids, striking out 3 while allowing just 1 hit over 2 frames. ENTER ESCALONA: Lefty Sergio Escalona, just added to Corpus Christi s bullpen, surrendered a two-out solo home run to Randal Grichuck in his Hooks debut on Saturday vs. Arkansas. He threw 11 of his 16 pitches for strikes, fanning 1 of the 4 batters faced. Escalona joined the Hooks from extended spring training where he was rehabbing from a torn ulnar collateral ligament, an injury which sidelined him for the entire 2012 season. Escalona made 49 appearances for Houston in 2011, posting a 2-1 record and 2.93 ERA. He struck out 25 and walked 11 in 27.2 innings, surrendering 3 home runs. The southpaw held left-handed batters to a.188 batting average. Acquired from Philadelphia in exchange for former Hooks INF Albert Cartwright in January 2011, Escalona made 14 appearances for the 2009 Phillies, going 1-0 with a 4.61 ERA over 14 appearances.
