Healy s first-inning blast was all Midland could muster against RHP David Paulino. Following the poke, Paulino retired 11 of the next 12 before stranding a pair in the fifth. With two away in the Hooks seventh, DH Chase McDonald hammered the first pitch from Covey over the fence in center field. His seventh bomb of the year put Corpus Christi on the board at 2-1. Covey struck out seven against three walks and three hits over 7 2/3 frames. The Hounds added a key insurance run in the seventh. LF Danny Oh notched a lead-off single against RHP Kyle Smith. A wild pitch and sac bunt set the stage for C Andy Paz, who sent a line drive into left-center for a 3-1 Midland advantage. Smith dispatched the final five men in order to finish the night. RHP Aaron Kurcz earned his third save by pitching 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Kurcz left two on base in the eighth. The game was completed in two hours and 14 minutes. PALTRY PORTIONS: Corpus Christi has dropped 10 of its last 13 games, and, for the most part, the bats have been the culprit. During this downturn, the Hooks have been held to 3 runs or less 9 times and 3 hits for fewer on 6 occasions. The club enters play tonight with the worst batting average (.203) and fewest hits (162) in the Texas League. Tulsa is next in line at.237 and 182, respectively. Guduan opened the campaign with a string of 7 consecutive scoreless appearances. He had retired 21 of 22 batters leading up to Matt Chapman s 9th-inning home run Thursday night. Filling the void in the Hooks bullpen is RHP David Schmidt. Schmidt last appeared and was the tough-luck loser April 25 vs. Midland, scattering 3 hits (including Matt Chapman HR) over a career-best 4 innings. He threw 34 of 47 pitches for strikes. Schmidt is 1-1 with a 4.70 ERA in 3 games for Corpus Christi. His prior outing was a 2-inning victory April 16 at ONEOK Field in Tulsa. Schmidt, who opened 2016 in extended spring training, was a non-drafted free agent acquisition of the Astros last June out of Stanford.
