1 Corpus Christi (21-15) at San Antonio (12-24) Tuesday, May 17, 2016 Wolff Municipal Stadium San Antonio, TX 7:05 p.m. ON THE RECORD: Home 10-5 Road Series 1-1 Sweeps W 7 Streak 5-0 Last Last 10 COMPLETE EFFORT: Alex Bregman plated four runs and Brian Holmes pitched five solid frames Monday night as the Hooks blanked the Missions 8-0 in the series opener at Wolff Stadium. The Hooks jumped on Bryce Morrow (0-5) for a pair of runs in the first. Bregman blistered a double to center and Derek Fisher followed with a triple to left-center. Fisher came home on the play thanks to a throwing error by Missions shortstop Jose Rondon. Fisher s double in the third keyed another CC tally. James Ramsay, who worked a lead-off walk, came home on an RBI groundout by J.D. Davis. In the fifth, Chan-Jong Moon and Ramsay reached on a single and walk, respectively. The pair scampered home when Bregman ripped another two-bagger, this one to right-center. The 5-0 edge was more than enough for Holmes (3-1), who yielded three singles and three walks. He struck out six and stranded six. In the seventh, Bregman walked and advanced to third on Davis double down the left-field line off Ramon Benjamin. Teoscar Hernandez made it 6-0 with a sac fly. Bergman s two-run bomb in the ninth off Kyle Lloyd capped his 3-for-4 night. Freeman and Cotton each worked two innings of relief. The southpaws teamed to leave three on base. Catcher Roberto Pena, appearing for the fifth time in his career at second base, made the turn on a double play to help clean up the ninth. 2 PAGE 2 SCARY SCENE: Monday s victory was costly as left-fielder Danry Vasquez and shortstop Mott Hyde sustained injuries while colliding in the first inning. Nelson Ward led off the frame with a flare into shallow left. Hyde made a sensational over-theshoulder diving catch, but his head struck the left knee of a sliding Vasquez. Following a lengthy delay, the two were carted off the field. Hyde, fully conscious, was able to stand under his own power before leaving the park via an ambulance. Vasquez (left knee) and Hyde (head) have been placed on the 7-day disabled list. Both are at the park today. MORAN MOVING UP: 3B Colin Moran has earned a big league call-up, with the Astros purchasing his contract from Triple-A Fresno in advance of Tuesday s series opener against the White Sox in Chicago. The news comes a day after Houston promoted 2B/OF Tony Kemp to the big-league club. Moran was hitting.288 with 7 doubles, 3 homers and 22 RBIs in 32 games for the Grizzlies. He hit safely in 16 of his final 19 Pacific Coast League assignments. The 23-year-old out of Rye, NY, ranked 3rd in the Texas League with a.306 batting average last season. Moran notched 25 doubles, 2 triples, 9 homers and 67 RBIs in 96 games for the Hooks, earning TL Postseason All-Star honors. The former 1st-round pick (6th overall in 2016) was the circuit s player of the month for July, batting.349 with 7 doubles, 2 home runs, 22 RBIs and a.945 OPS. Moran was acquired from the Marlins along with RHP Francis Martes, OF Jake Marisnick, & a 2015 draft pick, for RHP Jarred Cosart, IF/OF Enrique Hernandez & OF Austin Wates in July Moran joined the Hooks after coming over in the trade and was named Corpus Christi s Player of the Month for August, hitting safely in 24 of 28 Texas League contests. Moran, the nephew of 19-year MLB veteran B.J. Surhoff, joins Kemp, RHP Chris Devenski and IF Tyler White as Corpus Christi alums who have been promoted to the big leagues this year. Moran and Kemp are poised to become the 81st and 82nd former Hooks to make their MLB debut. LA DOLCE VITA: The Hooks, who have claimed 12 of their last 15, are riding a season-best 7-game winning streak, and stand 6 games over.500, which is the high-water mark of Corpus Christi won 8 in a row last year, May 11-19, the longest win streak for the club in INSIDE THE STREAK: Corpus Christi has outscored the opposition 44 to 28 during this 7-game surge. Hooks hitters are batting.316 with 18 doubles, 1 triple, 12 home runs, 40 RBIs and a.964 OPS. The pitching staff has crafted a 2.62 ERA and 1.01 WHIP, striking out 79 against 23 walks and 64 hits in 86.0 innings of work. The club s season-high 3 errors last night doubled the amount of fielding miscues charged to the Hooks during this run. MOUND MAVENS: Southpaws Brian Holmes, Michael Freeman and Chris Cotton spun the Hooks Texas League leading 6th shutout victory last night. Corpus Christi pitchers have permitted just 3 runs in the last 29 innings, a span of 4 games. All of those runs came in the Frisco 9th Saturday, giving the Hooks 28 shutout frames during this period. Corpus Christi starts have yielded only 2 ER in the last 5 contests (27.0 IP). EYE OF THE TIGER: SS Alex Bregman tied his season-highs in hits and RBIs last night, going 3-for-4 with 2 doubles, 1 homer and 4 RBIs. Bregman has slugged at a.737 clip since coming off the disabled list May 5. Of his 12 hits in the last 11 games, 7 have gone for doubles with 3 leaving the park. On the season, Bregman is hitting.330 with 23 runs, 8 doubles, 8 home runs, 23 RBIs and 14 walks against 9 strikeouts. The LSU product ranks among the Texas League leaders in OBP (1st,.438), SLG (2nd,.693), homers (T-3rd), batting average (4th) and RBIs (4th). HOMER HAPPY: Bregman s 2-run shot in the 9th Monday night extended Corpus Christi s home-run streak to 9 games, which ties the season-high (April 9-18). The Hooks are tied for 2nd in Minor League Baseball with 44 home runs. The High Desert Mavericks, Texas California League affiliate, is leading the pack with 49. PENA RETURNS: C Roberto Pena, optioned to Corpus Christi from Fresno yesterday, was 0-for-4 at the plate. Pena certainly made an impact though. Pressed into service at second base, he made 3 assists and 1 putout in 4 total chances, while helping turn 1 double play. It was the catcher s 5th career appearance at second. Pena was hitting.226 with 4 runs, 1 double and 5 RBIs in 15 games for the Grizzlies, throwing out 28% of runners attempting to steal. He played exclusively for the Hooks in 2015, batting.237 with 10 doubles, 1 homer and 22 RBIs in 74 contests. Pena led Texas League catchers in caught-stealing percentage, gunning down a Hooks single-season record 49% of runners attempting to steal. The 23-year-old from Caguas, PR, helped fashion 9 double plays, which also paced TL backstops. He was charged with 2 passed balls and 4 errors in 609 total chances for a.993 fielding percentage. Selected as a Texas League Midseason All-Star, Pena represented Puerto Rico in the Pan Am Games July He won a Rawlings MiLB Gold Glove Award in 2014 and was rated by Baseball America as the best defensive catcher in the Astros system from
