Buchanan (4-0), the Texas League ERA leader (0.93), yielded just five hits and struck out five over five innings. Rehabbing Astro Josh Fields continued his run of perfect relief, notching a sixth inning. Carlos Quevedo worked 1.2 innings and allowed one hit while striking out two. The RockHounds went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and stranded seven, including Chad Oberacker, who stroked a pair of one-out triples. Lefty Patrick Urkfitz, who bailed the Hooks out of a jam in the eighth, picked off Dusty Coleman at first base in the ninth and retired the next two batters for his first save of the season. Jonathan Meyer extended his hit streak to seven games with a lead-off single thru the right side in the fifth. One out later, Max Stassi belted an RBI double high off the tall fence in left for the lone run of the game. The Hooks have won 11 of their last 17. Doran did not make it out of the 3rd Tuesday night, surrendering 6 runs (4 ER) on 7 hits thru 2.1 innings. Kalian Sams hit his second 2-run home run off Doran in the first. He entered the contest with a 2.34 ERA, joining David Martinez as the only pitchers in Hooks history to begin the season 5-0. As a reliever, Doran stands 1-0 with a 3.68 ERA, yielding 6 earned runs on 14 hits, including 3 homers, in 14.2 innings. The former Texas Tech Red Raider has recorded a pair of 5-inning shutout performances, going 4-1 with a 2.82 in 5 starts on the season. Doran has made 2 relief appearances against these Rock- Hounds, allowing 2 earned runs and 5 hits n 5.1 frames for a 3.38 ERA. One of those 5 hits was a solo home run by former teammate Jake Goebbert. Doran was recalled from Lancaster on August 3 where he stood 8-4 with a 3.57 ERA in 17 starts. He struck out 72 and walked 30, holding the league to a.244 batting average while featuring a GO/AO ratio of Doran ranked sixth in the California League in ERA and placed second among league starters in opponents batting average. Named to the CL All-Star Team, he posted a quality start in his last 5 outings and in 12 of his 17 overall with the JetHawks. His Double-A debut came June 22 at Frisco. BUCK STOPS HERE: RHP Jake Buchanan has crafted a sensational start to the season, going 4-0 with a 0.93 ERA in 11 appearances and 7 starts. Buchanan, who has not allowed a run in his last five outings, currently ranks third in the minors in ERA and stands 2nd in WHIP (0.59). His batting average against (.172) slots 10th. Buchanan walked Beau Taylor in the 2nd last night, marking his first free pass in 21.1 innings. For the season, he has struck out 28 against 3 walks for a ratio of 9.3 to 1. Buchanan s impressive record is at odds with his run support. The Hooks have mustered a combined 8 runs in his 7 starts for an average of 1.1 per contest. Buchanan has started 2 of Corpus Christi s victories. 1 FOR THE MONEY: Last night marked the second 1-0 victory against the RockHounds this season and the first 1-0 road win in club history. Buchanan, Carlos Quevedo and Alex Sogard teamed for the previous combination shutout against Midland on April 30 at Whataburger Field. Before the trifecta of 1-0 wins this year, Corpus Christi had not posted a win by that score since August 1, 2010 against Midland at Whataburger Field. The Hooks are 13-5 in 1-0 games at Whataburger Field, but 1-10 in such games on the road. The 2007 club won a trio of 1-0 contests, including a 7-inning affair against Wichita (GM 2 of DH) and an 11-inning contest opposite Arkansas. Corpus Christi has never achieved wins in a single season. FILL IN THE BLANK: The Hooks authored their Texas League best 7th shutout victory of the season last night - 3 shy of tying the club record. Corpus Christi stands 2nd in the minors in this category, trailing the Southern League s Mississippi Braves who stand 8-4 in shutout contests. The Hooks are on an unrealistic pace to finish the season with 24 blankings this season. FAR FROM MARGINAL: Corpus Christi s 10-3 record in 1-run games leads the Texas League. The Hooks stand 7-0 at Whataburger Field and last night s W pushes them to.500 on the road at 3-3. Conversely, these Hounds are 4-10 in 1-run affairs. Their.286 winning percentage stands 7th in the 8-team circuit. FIELDS SHARP IN REHAB: Rehabbing Astros reliever Josh Fields has crafted 2 perfect rehab appearances with the Hooks, retiring all 6 batters faced. Fields, currently on Houston s disabled list with a strained right forearm, has fanned 1, throwing 13 of 17 pitches for strikes. He began his rehab with Quad Cities in the Midwest League. The first overall pick in the 2012 Rule 5 Draft worked 2 scoreless innings Monday night against Peoria. Fields made the start last Friday opposite Cedar Rapids, striking out 3 while allowing just 1 hit over 2 frames. Fields, a first-round (20th overall) pick of Seattle in 2008, went 4-3 with a 2.01 ERA and 12 saves in 42 appearances between Triple-A Pawtucket and Double-A Portland in the Boston system. He struck out 78 and walked 18 in 58.1 IP, holding the opposition to a.183 batting average. Thru 4 minor-league seasons, stands 11-8 with 23 saves and a 3.57 ERA between the Red Sox and Seattle organizations.
