For the second consecutive night, Hooks pitchers had a rough day at the office. Bobby Doran and Nick Tropeano combined to allow seven runs on 13 hits in seven innings. The Missions plated four in the fifth via six knocks, including an RBI triple off the bat of Jeudy Valdez and a pair of doubles by Yeison Asencio and Jake Blackwood. Josh Geer earned the win for San Antonio after Jose De Paula left with rotator-cuff tightness. Four SA relievers kept the Hooks off the board over the final five innings. The Hooks, who managed one hit past the fourth, struck out 14 times against two walks. Enrique Hernandez and Jio Mier both hit home runs for Corpus Christi. Following a stretch of three inconsequential games, the Texas League South First-Half Champs open the second act tonight. He shined Friday night in Frisco, tossing 5 innings of 2-run ball as the Hooks went on to clinch the first-half title 3-2 in 11 innings. De Leon s last relief appearance was not a sharp. On June 6 at Whataburger Field, he worked a scoreless 6th inning before allowing a grand slam to Beau Taylor in the 7th. For the season, De Leon is 0-1 with a 5.06 ERA in 15 appearances & 2 starts. He has walked 12 and struck out 24 in 32.0 innings with the league batting.235 batting average against. De Leon appeared June 2 in Game 2 of the twin bill at Dickey-Stephens Park in North Little Rock. He faced 4 batters and got 2 outs, allowing 2 hits and 1 walk. De Leon allowed 1 inherited runner to score...he had stranded all 5 IR prior to that appearances. His first start of the year came on May 29 at Arvest Ballpark. De Leon allowed 2 solo home runs thru 4 innings of work, striking out 4 against 1 walk. Last faced San Antonio on May 16 at Whataburger Field.allowed 4 runs on just 2 hits over 3 frames. The big blow was a 3-run home run by Kalian Sams. Prior to that appearance, De Leon featured a 1.20 ERA and.176 BAA thru his first 8 outings. His lone save was a 4-inning performance against Midland on May 2 at Whataburger Field. De Leon posted a 2-9 record and a 7.70 ERA in 40 app. (14 GS) for Lancaster in 2012, saving 6 games in as many chances. He was used exclusively as a reliever in 2011, going 6-4 with a 3.42 ERA over 43 appearances for Lexington. Fanned 51 and walked 13 in 55.1 innings. De Leon was 16-for-20 in save chances and tied for 4th in the South Atlantic League with 35 games finished. In 2010, his first season as a pitcher, De Leon went 2-1, 0.64 ERA in 23 G for Tri-City. He struck out 29 and walked 12 in 28.0 IP. De Leon hit.213 with 6 home runs and 66 RBIs thru 4 seasons as an infielder TAKE THAT HALF: Corpus Christi opens a new chapter of the 2013 season tonight after authoring the best first half in club history. The 2006 Hooks won the first half with a record and claimed the Texas League Championship despite going in the second half. In fact, Corpus Christi lost 7 of its last 9 regular season games before storming thru the playoffs. The Hooks engineered a sweep in the divisional round over a red-hot Midland club that went in the second half. Corpus Christi then won the TL Championship Series by besting Wichita 8-7 in an epic Game 4 at Whataburger Field which went 14 frames and lasted 4 hours and 59 minutes. Fast forward to the present. With the first-title under the Hooks belt, Corpus Christi can clinch home field advantage in the division series by winning the second half. The format would be two games at Whataburger Field and two at the home of their South opponent. If the series is not resolved after 4 contests, the scene would shift back to Corpus Christi. KICKIN IT AROUND: For the second time this season, San Antonio committed five errors in a game against Corpus Christi and won. The first occurrence was when these teams met for the first time this season - May 4th in San Antonio. Matt Andriese held the Hooks to 2 runs (1 ER) over 5 innings and a trio of relievers slammed the door thru the final four in a 6-2 decision. The Hooks stranded six on base and went 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position. In both contests, 3B Jake Blackwood was charged with 3 errors. The Missions own the worst fielding percentage (.965) and most miscues (92) in Double-A. San Antonio finished the first half 7 games over.500 due to excellent pitching. The Missions staff boasts an ERA of 3.25 with a.245 batting average against. Their ERA stands 3rd in Double-A, trailing Mobile (3.01) and Mississippi (3.09) of the Southern League. SWING & A MISS: Corpus Christ has struck out 52 times against 10 walks over the last 4 games for an average of 13 Ks per contest. The Hooks, who own a Double-A high 597 strikeouts (8.5 PG), is 1-3 during this stretch. Punchouts have not stemmed the club s offensive production this season as Corpus Christi leads Double-A clubs in home runs (76) and ranks third in runs scored (344). The Hooks record also slots third behind the Southern League s Birmingham Barons (44-26) and Binghamton (42-26) of the Eastern League. KEY COG: Erik Castro, who has belted 3 home runs over his last 4 games, has turned in some big hits of late. With the Hooks held hitless in the series opener at Frisco, Castro cracked a two-run single to tie that game at 2 in the 3rd. Corpus Christi then doubled its offensive output over the next 6 at-bats. The next night, he swatted a solo blast to right field in the third as part of a 4-homer game for the Hooks and a 7-1 victory. With Corpus Christi trailing 2-0 in the 7th Friday night, Castro belted a tapemeasure home run down the right field line to square the score. The Hooks would go on to clinch the first-half title with a Domingo Santana home run in the 11th. Since the beginning of May, Castro, along with teammate Jonathan Meyer, is tied for fourth in the Texas League with 31 RBIs.
