Martinez, who allowed just 3 baseballs to leave the infield, fanned 3 batters and threw 36 of 60 pitches for strikes. He worked just 1.2 IP of relief April 15 in Tulsa, surrendering a Henry Wrigley HR to lead off the 7th. Martinez tossed 5 shutout innings in his other start of the season, April 11 at Springfield. Of the 8 hits Martinez has allowed, 3 have left the yard. He currently ranks 9th in Texas League with a 1.88 ERA. Signed by the Astros as a non-drafted free agent in March 2005, Martinez went 9-5 with a 4.38 ERA in 27 appearances (26 starts) for the California League Champion Lancaster JetHawks last season. He led the club in starts, innings, strikeouts, ERA, BAA (.285) and WHIP (1.33). His win total tied for first on the club while his innings ranked third in CL. Posted a 7-2 record and 3.08 ERA in 13 second-half starts. The right-hander out of Venezuela walked 14 and struck out 63 over 87.2 innings and fashioned a 1.25 WHIP. Martinez was the league s pitcher of the week June after carving out seven innings of two-hit shutout ball against Inland Empire. George Springer became the first Hook this season to notch a multi-homer game and eclipse the 2-RBI mark. That laser-shot was bound for the Midland bullpen until Drew Muren made a leaping catch to save a home run.
