Arkansas series-opening triumph snapped the Hooks winning streak at four games. Bobby Doran put together a solid start, spreading two hits and one run over frames. After a two-out double by Travis Witherspoon and a run-scoring single from Drew Heid, Doran retired nine of the final 10 men he faced, walking two and fanning four. CC tied the game in the sixth on four walks and a sac fly from Jonathan Meyer. The Hooks gave the run back in the bottom half only to pull ahead in the seventh with a two-run frame. Arkansas equalized and then plated a pair in the eighth on Robbie Widlansky s double down the right-field line. Andrew Robinson and Patrick Urkfitz both permitted two runs thru the final three innings. Drew Muren went 3-for-4 with a double and a run. Max Stassi scored two of the Hooks three tallies and George Springer went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a walk. Corpus Christi stranded 12 and was 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position. 2 PAGE 2 MR. MARTINEZ: David Martinez, who owns the best record in the minor leagues at 8-0, is slated to start the finale of today s twin bill. He stands second in the Texas League in ERA (1.83) behind teammate Jake Buchanan (0.84). Martinez s WHIP of 0.98 is tied for second in the circuit. Martinez settled for a no-decision in his last appearance - a start Tuesday at Northwest Arkansas. He limited the Naturals to a solo home run by Manny Pina in his five innings. Martinez won a club record 6 decisions in a row from May 2 to May 24. His last victory was a 4-inning shutout relief performance against the Naturals. In his prior 3 appearances, Martinez had yielded 7 earned runs in 14.0 innings for a 4.50 ERA. Prior to that stretch, he carried a streak of 25.1 innings in which he had not allowed an earned run. Martinez s last loss was August 18, 2012 at Inland Empire, a span of 16 regular season appearances As a starter, Martinez is 4-0 with a 1.29 ERA, striking out 21 against 6 walks with the opposition batting.193. Posted a 7-2 record and 3.08 ERA in 13 second-half starts. The right-hander out of Venezuela walked 14 and struck out 63 over 87.2 innings and fashioned a 1.25 WHIP. Martinez was the league s pitcher of the week June after carving out seven innings of two-hit shutout ball against Inland Empire. He stood 7-2 with a 3.08 ERA away from Lancaster s hitter-friendly park. Martinez won both of his post-season starts, limiting the opposition to five runs on 13 hits and two walks in 12.0 innings for a 3.75 ERA. Martinez worked mostly out of the bullpen for Lexington in 2011, going 5-7 with a 4.19 ERA. In 2010, he helped lead Tri-City to the New York-Penn League Championship. Martinez fashioned a 5-2 record and 3.02 ERA in 17 outings (10 starts), striking out 57 against 11 walks over 65.2 innings. The 25-year-old owns a 3.13 strikeout-to-walk ratio over an eight-year career. JOSE RETURNS: Corpus Christi s 2012 Player of the Year, INF Jose Martinez, joins the Hooks today. There s an spot open on the club s active roster as INF Jio Mier was placed on the bereavement list yesterday due to the passing of his grandmother. Martinez opened the year with Oklahoma City and played in 3 games before injuring his hand. Last year, Martinez batted.304 with 13 home runs and 75 RBIs in 107 games for Corpus Christi. Before his promotion to OKC on August 10, Martinez ranked among the Texas League s Top 10 in runs (75, 3rd), hits (129, 3rd), total bases (197, 4th), RBIs (5th), average (6th) and triples (4, T-9th). The mid-season All-Star was the most difficult player to strike out in the TL (once every plate appearances). Martinez was the leader of a Corpus Christi offense which paced the league in runs (736), on-base percentage (.342) and RBIs (665). The 26-year- old out of Carabobo, Venezuela, hit.388 with runners in scoring position and notched a batting average of.324 with six home runs and 41 RBIs in 53 games away from hitter-friendly Whataburger Field. Martinez, named Hooks defender of the month in April, led all TL second basemen in fielding percentage (.988), committing six errors in 509 total chances. He turned 77 double plays, which ranked second among league second sackers. Including his time with the RedHawks, Martinez hit.289 with 13 home runs and 84 RBIs. His composite RBI total ranked fifth in the Astros system. The former St. Louis farmhand missed the last three seasons due to a broken bone in his left foot and surgery on his right shoulder. MONSTER MAY: The Hooks definitely made hay in this past month, fashioning a record - best May mark in club history. Erik Castro led the charge, batting.360 with 10 doubles, 4 home runs, 20 RBIs and a OPS. Jonathan Meyer hit.321, cracking 8 doubles, 3 homers and 23 RBIs. Michael Burgess belted 7 bombs and drove in 19. George Springer continued his top-flight production, hitting.303 with 8 home runs, 21 RBIs and 12 stolen bases. The club hit.278 with 36 home runs and 166 RBIs for the month, averaging 6 runs per contest. Jake Buchanan was Mr. May on the mound, holding the opposition to 1 unearned run in his 6 outings. He went 4-0 and struck out 19 against 2 walks over 27.2 IP. David Martinez went 6-0 with a 2.30 ERA in 7 appearances (4 starts). He struck out 20 and walked 6 in 31.1 IP. NORTHERN EXPOSURE: The Hooks, winners of 8 of their last 10 games, have stepped it up against their Northern foes. Corpus Christi is 17-9 when Garcia works behind the plate with Hooks hurlers boasting a 2.75 ERA. He has thrown out runners attempting to steal at a 36% clip.
