KEEP CC IN CHECK: Led by Sam Bragg and Joel Seddon, the RockHounds upended Corpus Christi, 4-1, Thursday night in the series opener at Whataburger Field. Corpus Christi s lone run came in the first. Carmen Benedetti worked a lead-off walk and advanced to second on a single by Chas McCormick. A deep fly ball from Abraham Toro advanced both runners into scoring position. Taylor Jones was next and hit a sharp grounder to short, scoring Benedetti. Martin caught McCormick in a rundown between second and third, cutting the rally short. Bragg, who stranded two in the first, retired 11 of the last 13 men he faced. The RockHounds erased a 1-0 Corpus Christi lead in the fifth with a two-out, two-run single off the bat of Tyler Ramirez. The damage came against Ryan Hartman who permitted just three hits in five innings of work. Hartman (9-3) struck out three and walked three. Corbin Martin entered in the fifth and received a rude welcome. J.P. Sportman belted a solo home run to left field. With two away, Jonah Heim sent a double into the right-field gap. Luis Barrera was next and tripled into left-center, making it 4-1 Hounds. Martin did not allow a hit over his final three innings. Seddon picked up the win by blanking the Hooks from the fifth through the seventh. Jarrett Martin and Kyle Finnegan worked the eighth and ninth, respectively, with Finnegan picking up his sixth save. Prior to this stretch, the Hooks longest run of setbacks was 4, when the club was swept by San Antonio in a 4-game series May 5-8 at Wolff Stadium. The Hooks have now dropped 9 of the last 12 games. Before this downturn, Corpus Christi had lost back-to-back games only once from May 26- July 14. The Hooks were during that torrid stretch. IN THE FIGHT: Hooks hurlers have kept Corpus Christi within striking distance of late. RHP Ryan Hartman and Corbin Martin posted zeroes in all but 2 frames last night, and all 3 losses in San Antonio were decided by a single run.
