1 Corpus Christi (18-8, 61-34) at Midland (7-19, 40-55) Thursday, July 19, 2018 Security Bank Ballpark Midland, TX 7:00 p.m. ON THE RECORD: Home Road Series 7-2 Sweeps L 1 Streak 2-3 Last Last 10 CC DROPS FINALE: The Hooks fell in their series finale to the Frisco RoughRiders 4-1 on Wednesday night at Whataburger Field. Hooks starter Brandon Bielak surrendered a leadoff homer to Eliezer Alvarez as the RoughRiders took an early 1-0 advantage. Bielak then tossed scoreless second and third innings before allowing an RBI double to Destin Hood in the fourth to make it 2-0. Frisco lefty Brett Martin tossed three scoreless frames while right-hander Tyler Davis relieved him and kept the Hooks off the board in 4.2 innings of relief. Bielak was replaced by Kit Scheetz in the sixth inning and finished a scoreless frame. Scheetz completed a scoreless seventh before allowing a pair of baserunners to reach in the eighth. Ronel Blanco replaced Scheetz and gave up an RBI single to Luis Mendez as the 'Riders took a 3-0 edge. The Hooks mounted a rally in the eighth against Frisco reliever C.D. Pelham. Josh Rojas laced a two-out double while Alex De Goti drove in Rojas with a single. Andy Pineda then reached on a single to put the tying runs aboard. Pelham was replaced by righty Reed Garrett, who induced a groundout from Anibal Sierra to end the threat. Frisco tacked on another tally in the ninth before Garrett tossed a scoreless frame to end the ballgame. 2 PAGE 2 ADCOCK PRIMED IN PEN: LHP Brett Adcock, recently promoted to Corpus Christi from High-A Buies Creek, is slated to make his Double-A debut tonight in relief of RHP Hector Perez. Adcock, a 4th-round pick of the Astros in 2016, went 5-3 with a 2.54 ERA in 16 Carolina League games (9 starts). Opponents managed just a.140 batting average and 1 home run against him. Adcock, who was teammates with Carmen Benedetti at the University of Michigan, is averaging 9.0 strikeouts and 4.8 walks per 9.0 innings pitched. The Carolina League Midseason All- Star last worked last Thursday, blanking Down East over 3.0 frames. Adcock did not allow a run in his final three Buies Creek assignments, which spanned 13.0 innings. The 6-1, 266-pound southpaw went 5-4 with 3.93 ERA in 25 games (18 starts) between Quad Cities and Buies Creek last season. Adcock ranked 5th in Astros system with 117 strikeouts, while walking just 39 batters (3 strikeouts per walk). He held lefthanded hitters to.215 BAA while righties batted.235. Adcock recorded a 3.14 ERA in 53 appearances (48 starts) in a 3-year career at Michigan. An All-Big Ten 2nd-team selection, the lefty notched 290 strikeouts in 258 1/3 innings pitched. In 2013, Adcock Led Bay City (MI) Western High School to first state championship, going 12-0 with 0.54 ERA in senior season. ON THE HOMEFRONT: Frisco s 4-1victory last night cemented Corpus Christi s first home series loss of the season. Prior to Monday, the Hooks had not endured back-to-back losses at Whataburger Field since May Corpus Christi has won 11 and split 2 of the 14 series at the Ballpark by the Bay. The Hooks are (.680) at Whataburger Field this season. WINNING WAYS: The Hooks have won 4 of their 5 July series thus far, compiling a record of 12-5 for the month. At (.642), Corpus Christi owns the 2nd-best record in Minor League Baseball. The Bowling Green Hot Rods (Tampa Bay) feature the top MiLB mark at (.674). The Texas League South first-half champs are (.723) since May 26. Corpus Christi needs to go (.659) the rest of the way to establish a new club record for wins. The 2015 Hooks went 89-51, becoming just the 2nd Texas League club in the last 20 seasons to reach 89 triumphs in a single campaign. M-V-P!: Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman won the Ted Williams All-Star Game MVP Award for his go-ahead home run in the 10th inning at Nationals Park Tuesday night, which lifted the American League to its 6th consecutive victory in the Midsummer Classic. This fits into an impressive pattern as the last 2 World Series MVPs are former Hooks: George Springer (2017) and Ben Zobrist (2016). Springer, 1 of 6 Astros selected to the AL roster, followed up Bregman s heroics with a home run of this own off former Tulsa Driller Ross Stripling. It stands as 2nd time Astros hit back-to-back home runs in extra innings. The first occurrence was last October when former Hooks Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa took Josh Fields deep in the 10th inning of Game 2 of the World Series at Dodger Stadium. GO LONG: RHP Jorge Alcala turned in a career-best 8.0 innings of work Tuesday night, which stands as the lonest outing by a Hooks player since Alex Winkelman 1-hit these RoughRiders over 8.2 frames last July. Alcala has limited the Texas League to a.234 batting average in his 8 Corpus Christi appearances. Between the Hooks and High-A Buies Creek, the hard-throwing 22-year-old sports a 2.97 ERA in 18 outings while averaging 9.3 strikeouts per 9.0 IP. GARZA RETURNS: RHP Ralph Garza, transferred to Corpus Christi from Triple-A Fresno Tuesday night, picked up the win that night by authoring a scoreless 9th. Garza posted a 2.70 ERA &.167 batting average against in 10 appearances for the Grizzlies from May 22 to July 12. The New Braunfels native struck out 25 against 15 walks in 20.0 innings. Garza blanked the opposition in 7 of his Pacific Coast League assignments. Selected by Houston in the 26th round of the 2015 draft, Garza is 4-0 with a 3.20 ERA in 12 games for the Hooks this season. The 24-year-old has fanned 26 while walking 6 over 25.1 frames as a member of Corpus Christi s pitching staff. In 22 combined outings (45.1 IP) this year, the former Oklahoma Sooner has not permitted a home run. WEEKLY WONDER: C Lorenzo Quintana, who went 1-for-4 with a double on Monday in his lone action vs. Frisco, is the Texas League Player of the Week for July Last week, Quintana went 7-for-13 with 2 doubles, 4 home runs, and 10 RBIs. This 4-game surge has raised his season batting average from.248 to.272. The run began last Monday when Quintana belted a trio of homers and plated 6 runs in his first 3 at-bats vs. NW Arkansas. Quintana became the 3rd player in club history to record a 3-homer game, joining the ranks of J.D. Davis (2016) and Domingo Santana (2013). His 5 runs scored in the contest also set a new club record. Quintana and SS Alex De Goti are the only Hooks to boast a pair of multi-homer performances this year. Quintana is the 2nd Corpus Christi player to earn TL Player of the Week honors this season. IF Randy Cesar has taken home the award twice (May & June 18-24). LHP Cionel Perez (April & May 14-20), RHP Jorge Alcala (June 4-10), Riley Ferrell (June 11-17), and LHP Ryan Hartman (June 18-24) have all earned the circuit s top pitcher award.
